Hah I tend to make my own comedy. When I hit 60 rdm I ran out to kill pirates on the ferry for fun. Ran right out and attack Blackbeard without missing a beat. Didn't even realize ti was Blackbeard until I was face down. Didn't even occur to me to wonder why everyone else was standing as far away as possible. Fun times.

Helped that almost every guide for newbies on this site advised against going the Mhaura route, made it all the more special. Now I'm wondering if people even realize there is a subjob quest out of Mhaura, or even care about it beyond the 12k they pay someone to farm skulls for them in Gusgen.

Remember when Spirits were the bread and butter of SMN? Back before they switched the spirit and avatar upkeeps around and started dumbing down avatars. I know I was sure confused when I finished SMN and was still using the pre-patch suggestions for lvling the job. I still enjoy my horde of "blinkies" more than the avatars, just wish they were more predictable with higher skill/more cost effective/less resisted by exp mobs.

Anyway, I'm off to my corner to continue farting dust now...

Heh. Not too long ago I helped out someone that took the Mhaura quest. Three zones, and almost and entire night trying to get the bloody robe to drop. Wonder if my beneficiary will appreciate their choice in subjob quests in the same light as you.

People actually pay others to to get their subjob stuff?

reading this put me in memiry lane

                    lets see:

                    1. The frist run to jeuno, i remeber arrgoing a moroblo(sp?) and fighting it there.
                    2. The lower prices
                    3. right at the start of retail, the friend i made in beta we pooled our gil together to start our LS
                    4. The old Dc by the windows key and came back swearing and cursing SE.
                    5. The one party the zoned the gobs in the jungle and serveral parties would ally together
                    6. getting your chocobo for the first time.
                    7. (on midgar) when gil sellers started showing up in ordells people would go there and stop them, we even had a LS for stoping them
                    8. the old teleporting system 500gil for mea/holla/dem and 700gil for yhoator and altepa and 1k for xacrbard.
                    9. at the end of beta decieding where you and your ls mates new server would be, turned out midgar was for everyone

Oddly enough, yes. Sometimes you can make pretty good money on that skull if you time it correctly. And it's not gilsellers or the usual suspects, either. I'm seeing this mostly from people completely restarting characters or HNMLS guys who created a new account to dual-box. I would expect these two groups to have those happy magical people... oh, what do ya call em now... fiends? No wait, friends, yeah friends. Why you'd wanna blow cash on something that takes your friends less than a half hour or so to help you with, I'll never know.

Convenience. Maybe their friends were not available right then, maybe it was going to take longer for them to get there then it would for someone else to. Your gil can buy food, items, armor, weapons and convenience.

It's no different then going to a service station to get your tires rotated. You could do it yourself but obviously you don't want to so you pay someone else to.

Re: Remember the Comedy in FFXI? Where'd it go?

Exp parties in Tahrongi, Buburimu and Shakhrami.

Getting together three Bubu exp parties to form an alliance to kill bogys for bloody robes. We'd kill bogys all night, split up into parties in the daytime, then ally again at sunset. Messy, but very successful. (Later, taking a LS member there with a THF friend to get subjob items. First rabbit, drop. First dhalmel, drop. First bogy, drop. Ghouls can go to hell.)

Eco-warrior without a high level player going along to massacre everything on the way.

Running through Sauromugue alone without Invis - I didn't really understand how the aggro system worked, I was relying on Sneak and Deodorize, and somehow I made it through alive.

Exping near the lake in Qufim, and at night, everyone crowded onto the ice in the middle of the lake to hide from the banshees because there were no high levels around to kill them.

Someone zoning a gob in Yhoator that wanders around causing trouble until one PT gets the bright idea of pulling it and calling for help. 3 parties plus a couple people standing around /inv all descended on it and turned it into hamburger. After all the people getting killed by marauding gobs it felt really good to get revenge.

Forming a party of six mithra, all around level 30, so we could kill stuff for RSE keys. I think we got like 2-3 per person before the week ended.

LS event: SAM job quest. My first time in Zi'Tah. 15 people riding around trying to find the right spot for it - and then, later, lining up to kill the bomb NM 15 times.

Going through Ranguemont alone (with no maps) at level 30 to get the last weather I needed for SMN quest. Then I got it and realized I didn't have a scroll of instant warp. I wandered around Beaucedine alone, RDM 30, with no map, for like an hour until I finally found the exit to Batallia. Without dying.

Soloing the avatars at level 20. Especially Ramuh, when I finally beat him on the third try.

Killing the NIN job quest leeches with a party all in the 30s. We didn't have any other sleepers so I opened with Chainspell to sleep two of the leeches. One of the WHMs died after Bene but the other managed to raise him in time for him to get the key item.

My first time running through Korroloka and wandering around in the desert trying to find Rabao.

Doing Genkai 1 papyrus with pickup parties and getting massacred over and over in the lower parts of Eldieme... and then doing it as a LS event in the Beaucedine side and it was no trouble at all aside from the crappy drop rate (and having to run some people through Ranguemont and get them the Vahzl crystal). That, more than anything else, probably impressed on me how important it is to have the right camp (which later did me a lot of good when I had to get two coffer keys out of that hellhole.)

Camping Oz coffer, when there were dozens of fleeing THFs running around picking them for astral rings.

Getting a party to get past the banishing gates in Garlaige, then when the coffer wasn't there, logging out on the ledge in Sauromugue. Every couple hours I logged in, ran into Garlaige, checked the coffer spots, ran back out and logged again, until the coffer finally popped where I could get to it. Then, later, doing the same thing again for PLD.

One of my exp parties in Kuftal: Why is the ground shaking? Why am I dead? What the hell is THAT? (Guivre.)

                            RDM Maat.

Doing NPC quest a day or two after the patch. The lines were unbelievable.

Trying to fight uncapped Diabolos the day of *that* patch. We finally did get in, but lost. Of course, nobody knew jack about the fight or had any strategies for it yet. We didn't even know he had a 2hr or Nether Blast.

Finally beating uncapped Diabolos with my PM static. No BLMs.

Both of my successful Fenrir fights - with friends, not just random people. Again, no BLMs.

Divine Might - this time it wasn't *no* BLMs, but only a few - a balanced alliance with a lot of kiting stuff around and a semi-planned wipe and reraise.

One of the common themes here: Almost all of these are things done without the help of players much higher level/more experienced than me. Sometimes because there weren't any available (I'm practically a first-wave PC user, so aside from a couple importers and ultra-fast-levelers, there wasn't anyone high level that spoke our language), sometimes because it was something I did alone just to see if I could, and sometimes because it's content that was aimed at 70+s anyway.

So in a way, we may not be doing today's newbies any favors by helping them out - it deprives them of the coolness of doing a RoZ job quest with a group that's all below level 40, or finding Rabao alone, or stuff like that.
Defeated: Maat, Divine Might, Fenrir, Kirin, Cactrot Rapido, Xolotl, Diabolos Prime, Kurrea, 9/10 Dynamis Bosses (missing Tav), Promathia, Proto-Ultima, Proto-Omega, 4 Jailers, Apocalypse Nigh, 6/6 Nyzul Bosses
                            RDM90, PLD90, DRG90, COR90, SCH90, BLU54
All Nations Rank 10, ZMs & PMs Complete, AUMs Complete, Captain, Nyzul Floor 100 (5 Weapons, 4 WS), Medal of Altana, WotG Mission 15, 1/3 Addons Complete, 9/9 Abyssea Main Quests, 6/6 Caturae

This explains a lot of lvl 75 newbies. Basically: People who had their hands held through everything.

You know them, the people who never know how to properly sneak/invis in places that require extreme Ninja/Sam Fisher/Sold Snake skills.

I kinda feel bad for people who are my friends, that's why I do stuff like fight AF mobs or do shit like fighting the ShadowLord (Tanked that mofo 4 Times so far).

But people having PLs in the dunes, Qufim, and basically everywhere up until 37? Bleh. . .

Like those people who got BLU COR and PUP to 75 in only 2 weeks. Kinda hurts the soul, don't it?

I think that when you first start playing the game and get your first job to the dunes, you really feel nervous at all times, waiting for the low pitched growl of a Goblin that would mean your doom...

But once you get to a higher level, you feel a lot more secure, even when walking through high aggro areas.

Personally, what I miss was a sense of euphoria when I figured out I how fast I could earn EXP when in a party in the dunes. Oh, what a great day that was! FFXI was my first MMORPG, so when I saw a full party of 6, I was very surprised that someone had managed to gather them all. Once we started chaining, the implications of the speed of it all caught up with me, and I laughed at the realization of how fast I could level up.

I miss that feeling a lot.
