  • Gameplay Question

Ok now this can be moved if necessary but i have one little question.

My freind wont play FFXI because he said he hates when u gotta pick your attack. Does this bother the gameplay or do u jus have to pick spells and can u just attack without picking it??

      Re: Gameplay Question

You might want to save up several questions and make one thread instead of spamming several new threads. The great thing about forums is that they're not chat rooms and you can take your time with posting.

Melee attacks are on auto. You target the mob, hit "Attack," and you'll be swinging your weapon until one of you is dead or you disengage. Spells, abilities, and ranged attacks you have to initiate when you want to do them.

        Re: Gameplay Question

well... for RPG, if you don't pick your moves, how do you suppose your character uses special abilities? down, down-right, right + punch?

that being said, FFXI is more like other online RPG. You go into "auto" attack mode when you engage in close combat where your character swings his weapon on his own. You still need to choose special moves and spells tho but they can be done easily with macro

Maybe you'r friend isn't into RPGs...or if he is, he isn't into RPGs that require fast reaction time? I mean you can select every spell you want, but you can also set macros to make it easier, like hotkeys basically.

              Re: Gameplay Question

It doesn't really bother the gameplay, it's rather a part of it. Since you're not worrying about hitting the attack button (as once you draw your weapon, and are in range, you attack automatically, like Jei said), all you do in battle is pretty much stand around the enemy in position, and select attacks and abilities/spells to perform.

Now, that little mini-menu (Attack/Switch Target, Magic, Items, Disengage, whatever else is on there) ... It's a frustrating menu. It's good for the other final fantasy games, not so much for Real-time. I always manage to get stuck in the 'switch target' prompts, or the 'give PlayerX a /tell' part of the chat menu (Why on earth is there a chat MENU?! argh, every time...)

Thankfully however, there are macro sets for your characters. You program what ability, spell, or thing you want it to trigger, and hit ALT or CTRL + the number of the macro, or if you use a controller like me, it's probably set up on the shoulder buttons, and hit the confirm button, and voila. It takes some setup, but once you have your macros working in pristine fashion, there's nothing finer.

Yes, you still have to 'select' the macros, but it's easier than menu diving when that goblin's looking at you reaaaaal scary-like

The neccessary quick reaction time makes it fun! =D
