The only difference from one server to the next are the players that are on them.

Nopers, sorries. The servers are as separated as can be.

The only way to interact with your friend is...

A) One of you saves up the 1100 or so (?) gil to buy a worldpass, and then the other uses the code to create a completely new (and thus, no access to your former items) character, or...

B) Wait until a world migration happens and move your character (and even then, it's not guaranteed to be the server your friend is on)...

So... yeah, it'd be neat if you could though.

You won't ever be able to send items from one server to another. This would probably create additional lag and would also mess up some of the economies on servers with less amounts of players.

Yep. Different servers is like a different wold in a sense, only the world remains unchanged and the people are all different.
