I think it's just based on whether it missed or not and whether you were close enough to the door. Doesn't hurt to try, but I can tell you that the attack will hit you dead center so you're just changing which direction he's aiming at.

      • Re: What's your pet peeve in FFXI?

Quickly realising why I quit the game the last time I played it when Abyssea was out.

Simple reason really due to 5 things:

        1. It's impossible for me to do a thing solo

I have a lot of stuff to do for my WHM. And it's pretty much the ONLY thing I can do unless someone like Jarre or Leasious is on and I can help them level a bit or something. But what happens with my own stuff? Well I'm a White Mage and guess where that leave me on the "getting shit done" ladder? Pretty much stuck at square one as I have no job at 99 that can easily obliterate all of the trials in about a week.

Soloing for me is walking up to a mob then realising it is hitting for 100-200 a hit and oh look I can't get shadows back up because I don't have Utsusemi Ni because nobody will help you with BCNMs and oh look all I can so is spam cures until I'm eventually dead. That is if I even attempt to solo something. Nine times out of ten when soloing in an MMO I'll just give up and play a single player RPG because it will save me more money in the long run and I will get the exact same gameplay experience.

Actually I get a BETTER gaming experience playing D&D with Yyg, cid, Mezlo, Armando and lyulf which is all totally free (aside from the cost of game books that I already own) but I'm going off on a tangent here (but really, see if everyone will let you listan in on one of our sessions some time and you will see how much fun we are having).

At times it feels like I'm needlessly punished for enjoying a class that simply can't solo and don't have the ability to just switch to a 99NIN/DNC or RDM/NIN and solo the entire game..

But since I've only got the one job, I can't solo, well, a thing and this is related to the other points I'm making.

        2. I simply cannot compete with people at Lv99

I don't mean this in a defeatist way. Yyg, Cid and Hayde will all know that even though I can't finish my Lv90 cap quest due to no parties inviting me and even though the only Atma I have are for melee classes and even though I have no endgame gear whatsoever I won't give up and I'm far more interested in going down in a blaze of glory having tried to heal someone while completely and utterly gimped then just say "meh forget it".

But let us look at the facts.

We have already established that people with multiple 99's can solo a lot of content.

We have already established that I can't so I'm forced to rely on others giving up their own time to help.

Long time players have far more resources than returning players.

The majority of the players in this game would help themselves before helping others.

Problem is is that Lv99's also have no incentive at all to even consider giving me a hand. If they want a WHM, then everyone has it levelled so they would just have someone switch to it. Because they can solo pretty much everything they can easily knock out a full AF+1 set in about a week while I'm struggling to get maybe 1-2 a week. Why bother helping the returning player when you can get your own fully geared WHM job in less than a week?

And consider what I actually need to do. I'll break it down:

        Cure Staff Trials

        Orison +1/+2 Gear

Basically there's no real accessibility in this game unless you already got there when the level cap was originally raised. Playing catch up just leaves you stuck because you have nothing to offer to a long time player. a Lv99 can easily do all of this solo since they will already have a class levelled and gear for it.

        3. Everywhere I go I feel like a massive load

Linked to the above. I do genuinely like helping others out but when I tag along with say Hayde or Yyg to help them farm something I always get that one gut feeling: "Am I really being of any use here?" My gear is useless and I'm stuck at 90 so I constantly get the feeling that I'm just slowing everyone down and when the fight does happen, I really do get the feeling that my presence is doing very little to change the overall outcome of the fight other than maybe tossing out Haste and some Accession buffs.

        4. I'm not settling into the Linkshell at all.

Maybe it's because of the above, I don't know but I constantly get the feeling that I'm just being ignored in the Linkshell chat. I don't mean my chat gets buried I mean i get flat out ignored. Offered of help and requests for help get ignored and the only people I've ever seen respond to me in LS chat are people from DiV really. I mean I have no idea as to if I will even get along with any of the LS because nobody talks to me, the people from outside of DiV seem to have their own group and they just seem to not care about anyone else.

        5. I have to stay up until 2-4am to get anything done

Well, related to the above. I only know two people who are from my time zone: Jarre and Leasious. They are not always on and if they are on when I'm on I'm usually offering to help them get levelled up. Partying with Jarre is always fun since our Skype chats are always a good laugh and Leasious I party with all the time on WoW so I know from other games that partying with her is a lot of fun (even if she does try to get me killed at least once a day on WoW). No problem there.

Now I'm grateful for ANY help even if we fail badly and get nothing done, truly I am. The problem I'm having is that the people who can and are willing to help me with things (Yyg, Hayde, cid) live in the US meaning that I have two choices:

        1. Stay up until 2-4am and hope they aren't busy with something
        2. Wait until the weekend and hope they aren't busy enjoying their weekend

Because the majority of the people on the server are Americans, the server is basically dead during what would be my prime time, it's even dead during what should be Japanese prime time. I'm not really complaining here but it does mean that a lot of the time I'm idling about, trying to find someone that isn't a Japanese playing in the early hours of the morning or a US player bazzaaring while at work.

        ==

Really I didn't mean any of this to come across as a ranty post. Honestly the emotion I was feeling while writing this post was neutral since I'm in a pretty good mood but also rather tired due to it basically being monsoon season and the humidity is a nightmare. I guess it was just something I felt like sharing with the others and probably why I seem a bit "half there and half not there" while playing.

I wish this was true, but SE has gone to great lengths to ensure things are not as soloable as they may look. Also, those things that you can actually solo take so long to kill it's more a test of how long you are willing to punish yourself to get something done without help (because there's rarely any help available to begin with.)

I mean, maybe it changes once you are 99 and have teamed up with people to get better gear, but for someone like me who couldn't even get help for the last genkai, (not to mention the fact that I completely and utterly despise the idea of needing a party for that last fight that should've been an epic version of the Maat fight.) soloing stuff can take way longer than I'm willing to spend on the game.

Fire, want my FFXI character? I'll never play it again and I have alot of level 75's. I quit before the level expansion. I'm guessing getting form level 75 to 99 wouldnt take too long.

@3: I think some of this is just the dynamic that Abyssea has created. Some jobs when fully decked out are almost completely self sufficient inside Abyssea, Ninja and Dancer being the most egregious examples. This can often make the healer feel superfluous at times. I wouldn't sell yourself short though, White Mage is still a hell of a power house for those times when shit actually does hit the fan. Even without super gear and atmas, you can still salvage a lot of situations that my Red Mage can't.

@4: I feel ya on that one. I'm not really feeling too settled in there either. I miss our humongous DiV shell, that was the best thing ever.

@5: I don't know how you UK folk manage to get into MMOs that don't have region-based servers. The prospect of having the server filled with rolling tumbleweeds during primetime is just eery and unsettling to me.

Definitely agree about D&D though. It's beating the pants off of FFXI in terms of things I look forward to doing in my free time.

                  Point 1
I can certainly understand the frustration. But just out of curiosity, why would you not be able to level another job? Even if you don’t want to burn in, you can level quite fast with the exp rings and F/GoV pages. You use that job to help your favorite. And you can do this solo.
If you haven’t already, you may need to step out of your comfort zone a shout for things. A simple blm/DD/Whm can handle most of the seal NMs and you have a great chance of proc’ing yellow. You don’t always need Nin/Blu/Blm/Brd like some people think.
And as much as I’d like to see you stay (even though were on different severs)…if you’re enjoying D&D more. By all means stick with that. Games are about having fun. Hell life is about having fun. Do what makes you happy. But I can help fix your ffxi issue, I’d love to see you stay.

                  Point 2
I’m not saying anyone you mentioned is neglecting you…but ideally, if you’re scratching peoples back (curing for them), they should be scratching yours. Sure half the people out there may have whm leveled…but chances are they don’t want to use it unless they need to. I have like...6 other jobs leveled that I don’t even touch unless I have to.
Again…maybe shout for limit breaks and offer some sort of gil reward if you can. If you can get 2 or 3 LS mates to help out, that’s that many less PUG people you need. Generally (at least in our shell), people don’t mind giving up there time for you, if you give up your time for them. If you help others out, you should not feel guilty about asking them to help you out. You need to step up and say ‘Hey, look guys, I wanna do the shit you do. at least help me out with the basics”.
As for trials…hardcore people are getting them done in week. I couldn’t get a cure staff in a week, I’ll tell you that. Besides, you don’t NEED the cure staff. That’s something you eventually work towards. My whm does just fine with a 65 ish club (with +5% cure) and a genbu shield with meh aguments (with +2% cure). If you’re a career whm and know more about the job, I’m willing to bet you’re a better whm than me.
Orison +1 gear you should try shouting. Also, some of those pieces are dropped by commonly killed NMs that people need for emp weapons. Even going to the pop spots and asking a party if they need them is an option. +2 are a different story.

                  Pont 3
If you’re the WHm… how are you slowing people down? Unless they need another whm because you curing too slow, your helping. Besides even an 80 whm can help. Its not like you’re going to have accuracy issues on what you’re fighting. Your buffing up your party and keeping them alive…just with a little less MP.

You’re a load if people need to babysit you. If you constantly get lost. Constantly get aggro, don’t know how to read a map or wiki…stuff like that

                  Point 4
Takes time finding a good ‘home’ these days. I wish you the best of luck there. The level increase and ease of things have made the game a little more cliquey imo.

                  Point 5
That sounds tough…rooks 2 hours ahead of me which means he usually logs off before me. And wants to get started before me. Best bet is to just keep on trucking and eventually you’ll run into some nice people on your time frames.

I wish you luck bud….i really do. I’d suggest hanging out with our shell on cerb, but I cant 100% guarantee you won’t run into some of the same issues

Firewind, when i eventually get up to 90 we can both do that last genki and drag ygg and hayde and possibly cid in to help.

I am quite happy to level sync with you if you want to get treants and spiders around lvl 60's, hell we could always go into boyada tree or one of the tunnels then you can get the exp from them to get your staff bits. I could always get a job to lvl 10 (thf) and we can do treants in Konchant lvl synced. I don't mind helping out as you have always helped me.

Might be a good idea to consider Abyssea during lights day on some of these.

50 Spiders - Weather must be up
                      - I think I did these in the tree, but yeah you've got a legitimate gripe here.
--Have you tried Wajam Woodlands? Pretty sure in the south there EP spiders and frequent wind weather
50 Mobs with light weather up (Can't do due to Sky mobs being Too Weak in the 90's. Also nobody takes a WHM to Nyzul Isle so forget that)
                      - I thought you could just wait until lightsday.
You can do lights day. Try hitting Aby-La Thine. People kill pixies there (they count as elements)
50 Arcana with light weather (See above)
-RoMoave…but I thing light is kinda rare there.
50 Beasts with light finishing blow (WHM nuking yeah...I've also already tested and I can't solo the BST Gobbies in Bibiki Bay at 90 since, well, WHM, the damage it just too high)
                      - I did bunnies in Cape Terrigan. Getting the killshot is a pain, but you have holy and divine magic skilled so you'd probably have a better time of it than me.
Bunnies/Tigers in Ulg Range. Pretty easy...or Abyssea
10 Bottled Pixies (I don't have THF levelled so this will take a long time)
                      - There's a Yagudo Priest that's a 100% drop you can farm. The hard part is all the damn running back and forth.
-There are mulitple Yad Priests that drop 100% in Meph Mts [s]. As cid said, its just a pain because you can only hold one
15 Bottled Pixies (Oh...Yay...) (Same as above)
150 Elementals - Light Weather must be up (See Nyzul Isle comment)
                      Abyssea La Thine fighting pixies
175 Elementals - Light weather (See above)
                      Abyssea La Thine fighting pixies
                      15 Light Geodes (Can't afford)
Fight stuff on lights days, you’ll collect a bunch as you progress though trials
                      - you're already at +20% cure potency at this point so I wouldn't fret too much. Just invest as your budget allows at this point.
40 Light Geodes (Most definitely can't afford)
15 Carbites (Okay I may be able to afford this)
These cant be THAT expensive… But same thing, fight abyssea things on lights day.

That fancy BST with 77 axes and perle armor? :p Though I've made huge improvements since the last week. I keep meaning to hunt you down to help you finish your orison leg seals but alas, you're never online...when I'm online anyway.

Yeah my schedule has made playing online sporadic. Starting Monday though, the only days where I absolutely MUST be at the office in the morning will be Wednesdays and Fridays; so basically Tuesday and Thursday nights are a no-go for me, but I'm pretty much going to be free on every other night until further notice.

I also have to be in on Monday morning for a training thing but people are always going to bed early on Sunday nights so I was already planning on just sitting in and watching Pawn Stars or something anyway.

Joined a party to get Body Seals. Sent a /tell to the Party leader said it was fine that I couldn't afford pop items as long I I healed.

                              Party leader invited me.

Killed an NM a couple of times, couple of seals dropped with a couple being lost due a combination of a badly timed D2 from the dual boxing NIN & BLM and the party leader refusing to pass on the last WHM body seals I needed to finish my Orison Body +1, then kicking me.

                              Why was this?

Because I got seals for free according to the party leader (that was the reason for the kick and also why he refused to pass when I asked him in /tell) and none dropped for him so apparently it wasn't okay anymore even though I was more than happy to stick around to help him farm for more items and even offered to do so via /tell after he booted me.

Apparently I'm lazy, a ninja and leech (according to the /tells) due to not having a class that can solo farm and a ton of resources built up from years of playing the game without a break and because the only seals that didn't drop were ones that the party leader needed. Even though 1) I was mostly tagging along to help an LS member after WAR seals and got lucky and got a couple of seals and 2) The party leader was fine with me having no pop items...

                              Seriously...

Christ...that's awful. Seriously, people's expectations are way out of whack.
