Some people really and truly should not have White Mage leveled.

I just did a pickup Amarok and spent the entire time wanting to reach out and strangle the White Mage for being utterly incompetent. I'm surprised they manage to make it to the NM with their pants still on, albeit seated firmly on their head.

Sometimes, I like to do Searches of how many people are playing what jobs, especially at level cap. Just did it today for level 95.

And BSTs were currently the 3rd most represented job at level 95, behind WHM and THF. They even beat out BLMs.

There are worse things than having one of your favorite jobs become a bandwagon job. Like having your mage job become less useful than your DD job. I joined a seal run this weekend and was told they wanted my Dragoon more than my Red Mage. I love playing Dragoon, but I felt somewhat slighted that my Red Mage has become that underwhelming. Usually pickup parties are all "oh you have a mage job, bring that."

Red Mage is just in a really weird place at the moment.

I joined a seal run this weekend and was told they wanted my Dragoon more than my Red Mage.

All the 2005 dragoons are laughing maniacally at this.

Seriously though, this doesn't surprise me at all, and considering what a redheaded stepchild of a job dragoon STILL is, the fact that it gets picked over rdm should be an indicator of how bad off rdm is in this era of the game.

I don't understand the stigma of Dragoon. Dragoon is a bit of a monster even without an Empyrean(or equivalent). I've seen my Drakesbanes break 5,000 damage and that's just using a Store TP Stingray. Tack on Angon and /SAM and you've got yourself a very potent zerg machine for downing seal NMs(haven't been called on to use it on anything sturdier as of yet). Someone says "kill it" and I'll drop four or five Drakesbanes before I actually have to wait on timers and rely on standard TPing.

So I can definitely see the appeal of bringing along a Dragoon, but that it would be preferred over my Mage job is just disheartening, and as you mentioned, it says a lot about how well Red Mage is fairing at the moment. At this point I don't know where SE is taking RDM or even where I want them to take it. They seem to have painted themselves into a corner, committing to ensuring BLM and WHM outshine RDM by quite a lot in their respective fields, but it has left Red Mage without a sense of where it is supposed to fit in the job layout. It's kind of mediocre at everything and the one field it might have had a chance to excel in has been obstructed by design decisions that seem intent on actively stifling any growth in that area.

In the early days it had as high an idiot quotient as Drk had an emo one. I don't really understand why but the majority of the Drgs I used to party with turned out to be full retard.

Probably a combination, but I don't get why there would be any of it still around today. Dragoon is a pretty awesome job for making things dead.

Regarding the stigma behind DRG, I always felt it was a bit of an uphold climb for the job ever since it had its rather lackluster beginnings. Lack of a whole lot of useful job abilities and, while a fine damage dealer, it's just viewed as one damage dealer out of a sea of damage dealers who were probably viewed to have more useful abilities to offer beyond just weaponskills.

People in this game are just really slow to let go of their past misgivings. RNGs will always remember they're the original nerfed job. BSTs still hold a grudge over the "MPK nerf". SAM continues to be pegged as the favorite child of Final Fantasy XI. I wouldn't be too surprised if there are WHMs who look at RDM and say the job had it coming.
