Yeah but they're retardedly stubborn. Look how long it took them to even allow windowed mode, and when they did, they still made it suck so you wouldn't want to even use it.

It's really dumb that they haven't just said: we didn't make this thing but we're officially ok with you all using it. It'd be the best of both worlds.
The problem is thatWindower lends itself to actual cheating if you're inclined to do so, so they can't really give their official approval of Windower.

The solution would be for them to implement their own official Spellcast with all of the functionality, but they're clearly not willing. They'd rather give us a few more lines per macro.

No, the problem is it is an unfair advantage for PC users.
I use a Mac because I'm just better than you are.

They could build it into the game itself instead of making an external program.

Besides, I think 8 years is enough time for anyone who had no choice but to use a PS2 to get himself a computer that can play FFXI; especially since just about any computer with an actual graphics card should do the job at this point. Apparently not everyone thinks it's absolutely essential to get Spellcast since people still use their PS2s.

If you're inclined to call it an unfair advantage, it's one that PC users have had access to for years. It's a bit silly to pretend Windower doesn't exist.

Yeah, but PC users have always had an advantage. It's the nature of the beast really. I can understand efforts to curb that as much as possible to level the playing field, but it's ultimately a battle that was lost the moment it began. Providing legitimate alternatives would be the best means of combating the imbalance, but at the end of the day the console players will always be a few steps behind.

The solution to that is really simple though, and it's to fucking ban the people who do use things like claimbots, fishbots, and pos hacks. I know they outright ban the pos hackers, but some of the fishbotters remain and a whole host of claimbots are still in use today. They did take action (supposedly, though I've heard rumors that the maker was just tired of supporting it) against FFXIApp, but that was only about a year or two ago at most.

If they would just allow the use of Windower and its addons but draw a hard line in the sand and say, "If you use this <Name of bot program>, you will be banned," and then actually follow through, then you know what? People wouldn't do it. I botted for well over six months at endgame and I never once feared for my account because I wasn't pos hacking or duping, and apparently, that's the only thing that SE knows how to detect and/or cares to ban. If people were getting regularly banned for claimbotting then people would stop doing it.

But the problem is, they can't be fucked to actually going around and trying to find out who is doing what. They also can't be fucked to take care of the people who get hacked - and they blame third party programs on that even though more often than not it's someone simply browsing the internet who gets nailed. (And who doesn't browse the internet, honestly?) SE has their heads on slightly sideways when it comes to a lot of things.

I mean look at Blizzard. They don't go running around about the horrors of third-party addons. They embrace them and even incorporate the good ones into the UI themselves. They realize that people get hacked but that more often than not, it's not third-party access doing it. It's people doing their usual browsing tactics, clicking on spoof e-mails, and other such things. And if a third-party program became known to Blizzard to be stealing accounts? You can be sure that it would be dealt with pretty damn quick. SE just ... I think they're honestly like the Soup Nazi. "NO GAME FOR YOU!" "You will play it our way, and YOU WILL LIKE IT, DAMMIT!"

@Aks: How would you detect something like the use of wireframe mode to see through walls in Nyzul? That's undoubtedly cheating but it's impossible to prove.

                • Re: What's your pet peeve in FFXI?

I have not the foggiest idea, honestly. I am not a programmer. But if SE were to officially endorse Windower and its plugins and get with the Windower devs - mainly Aikar - and work with them and say, "Okay, this one's okay, this one's not, this one's not, this one is..." then maybe you'd have it a little easier for them to draw some sort of a line. As it is, 99% of the people using plugins/addons are going through the official Windower site, and every addon posted there is approved by Aikar, as far as I know. If SE were to work directly with them, most of the players would work within what Windower themselves give us, and I'm sure that if/when Windower dropped support of certain plugins and refused to update them when they break with new patches, very few people would try to continue using those things except for the few script junkies that want to develop for themselves and at their own risk.

Either that, or force Windower users to register their Windower accounts and register every single addon or something in order for it to work? I don't know. That might be a bit extreme, though if you'd only have to do it the first time you loaded that particular plugin/addon that might not be so bad. To be honest, I'm not sure how they could do it. I have no programming experience. I just know that if they were to find some way to allow addons into the framework, they could set their parameters for how they wanted it to work, and if they didn't work within that, then the addon wouldn't work. But I'm not sure SE could even do it, honestly.

And I don't know how anyone can even play that way. I've seen those screenshots, and it hurts my eyes. Lol.

The default graphics settings are pretty terrible but you can fix it just fine with a regedit, which is incidentally exactly what Windower does to make itself look prettier.

I know that. My vision is pretty poor - especially my depth perception. Something like that would make it extremely difficult for me to play. I'd never really be able to see where the doorways were or know if I was even walking on solid ground. It would hinder me a lot more than it would help me. And I'm a pretty big offender as far as plugins go, but that is one I just can't stomach.

Can't you just turn it on/off as needed with a macro? Or does going into/out of wireframe mode require a restart?

I'd assume zoning does it, as that's how it often works if you .dat swap with the game open. But it would still bother me even for a few floors of Nyzul. If the other people want to play that way that's fine, my eyes can't handle it. I'm sure people don't play that way 100% of the time.
