Re: What's your pet peeve in FFXI?
Does it suck to have the game down for a while? Sure. Is it crucial for anyone to have the game up and running? No. I'm disappointed that I can't get my DNC up a few more levels -- but in the long run, I know it's not important.
Some areas of Japan (all areas???) are having rolling blackouts through April 8th in an effort to conserve electricity. The whole infrastructure is completely wonky right now. I would not expect or want a company to waste electricity running servers for a MMORPG when others need electricity for FAR more important purposes.
Do we know for a fact that there were/are no backup servers anywhere? Is it possible that there were/are backup servers that were affected by either the quake(s) or the tsunami? I know my company has an emergency relief center complete with backup servers at another location about 45 miles away from my office. It's quite feasible that any major disaster like a huge earthquake (especially if it generates a tsunami since the other facility is fairly close to the coast) would heavily damage both sites. The backup facility will be very useful if the main headquarters burned down or blew up or fell down -- but in a disaster of extreme magnitude, it's possible that we'd be totally screwed.
So yeah - I can see grounds for an actual complaint if the company made us pay for downtime ... but if they're not charging us while their system is offline, we need to just move on and find something else to do for a few days. We'll live. Thousands of people in Japan will not be so lucky.
