Service is supposed to be provided on a continual basis not a "whenever is convenient and don't worry because you just don't have to pay for it when we don't feel like providing it".

In the absence of a SLA, service is indeed 'when we feel like providing it.' FFXI, as well as the vast majority of services you use, are best effort. So sit down, grow the fuck up and learn how the real world works.

I don't think that expecting a huge corporation like SE to have some sort of backup plan, if only a set of backup servers somewhere, is a whole lot to ask. I get that it's just a game. Most companies do have something in place in case of natural disaster.

It's unfortunate that people who dare to say, "They should have had some back up servers somewhere" tend to get beaten repeatedly by the masses who think they're being insensitive pricks when really, they're saying what they mean. They should have had back up servers somewhere. That's it. At this stage in the game I would happen to think it's too late, but I'm kind of surprised that they went eight years with no backup.

But emotions are running high right now, so people don't see that, they see someone wanting their "fix." The earthquake sucks but the fact that people are questioning their lack of a back up plan shouldn't get people so angry. It's a perfectly valid thing to ask.

Who said you need to be content about it?

Do you think the people dealing with energy cuts and water rationing are content about it? How about the guys working 24/7 at the electric companies trying to restablish any sort of reliable service? And the people dealing with failing nuclear reactors while exposing themselves nearby potentially lethal levels of radiation to try and prevent a meltdown at the power plants?

But they are doing what has to be done in order to bring things back to "normal" as soon as possible.

You have it very easy, all you lost was some play time on a MMOG game and still have the luxury to be able to be spoiled enough about it to throw a tantrum without bothering to think about how it's all happening over there in Japan.

Thats because you have no idea what you're talking about. Here's a hint - It costs more then simply twice as much to have a redundant site. Do you think $45 a month or more is a good fee for FFXI?

It is just a game. It is not a needed service. These are important points when deciding what disaster plan to formulate. The plan of shutting it down in the time of a disaster is perfectly acceptable given the type of service being provided.

Fair enough. (Though there are nicer ways to say that, fyi ) The thing is, people are going to ask. A lot of people are going to be ignorant to that sort of thing, like myself. Why do people fly off the handle and go, "OMFG YOU SICK ASSHOLE PEOPLE ARE DYING AND ALL YOU CARE ABOUT IS FFXI!?!?!?!" when they could simply say, "The reason they probably don't have a backup plan is because of x, y, and z." You do have to remember that a lot of people don't know that stuff.

But that's a fair answer and I understand it now. It sucks that the servers had to go down but if it is as costly as you say to maintain a second set of servers somewhere, then I can completely understand SE's reluctance to have them.

But that still doesn't mean people don't have the right to ask without getting treated like the scum of the earth for it. It does have to do a lot with how people ask, but there was a post on the official forums asking, "Do all of the servers have to be down?" And when you read the thread, the person legitimately did not know that all of the servers are located in Japan, and it says so in the OP, and from the first post you get people flying off the handle treating this person like a completely insensitive jerkoff for asking a question he legitimately did not know the answer to.

That's kind of the problem right now.

Yes, SE should probably have had an emergency backup plan in place. Hopefully they're not just hunkering in a corner of the SE offices shivering in fear, and are trying to find somewhere else to host it. Let the JPs be the ones with the longer ping times for a while. It can't happen right away, though, they have to send an entire copy of all world databases and everything else to wherever, and I would be surprised if that wasn't at least a few hundred gigabytes.

But if we're doing to talk about "should", they should have had better protection for those diesel generators at the power plant. Apparently they had a seawall up, which would protect them from storm surges. But Japan is the place that invented the word "tsunami", and they should have had them better protected from the much higher surges of a major tsunami.

There isn't a lot that could have been done about the people living along the coast, but losing those generators (and the subsequent failure to install portable generators because of a plug mismatch) has had effects for all of Japan. They're just lucky that they had reactors 4, 5 and 6 shut down for maintenance at the time.

I won't even get into the whole 50Hz/60Hz mess. But I think it's about time they started converting over to 60Hz already.
