Re: What's your pet peeve in FFXI?
Uhh . . . I think that this was covered in another thread but, no, not unless you're fighting an Elemental. What people tend to forget about Red Mage damage is that it is not negligible, but merely sub-par (and that is as it should be, no less; we would be absurdly broken if we could compete with dedicated DDs, after all). They assume it's negligible, and then start making up asinine ways of getting damage out of a Red Mage, usually in the mindset of trying to Enspell-burn EXP mobs (good lord, no).
Fact is, you'd produce better damage over time (and likely weaponskills with more than two digits of damage) just using a plain old higher-level weapon (like Gold Sword, for the medocre example I mentioned in the other thread, but obviously you'd ideally have something much better than that, as well) and just gearing themselves in the mindset of a regular DD, swapping gear out for spells and weaponskills as needed. You'll produce much more damage over time than just trying to Enspell an exp (or in fact, any non-Avesta) mob to death . . . it will still be sub-par damage, though, and a Red Mage's magical duties still come first. The most common real issue with Red Mages on the front line is the inability to multitask, and, in an attempt to melee mediocrely, mismanage magical musts.
Cid hit the nail on the head when he said that a Red Mage that doesn't Enfeeble (against anything that's not lolibri) needs to find another job; whether or not they were healing I don't really care that much.
