I'm mired in the loathsome task of leveling white mage for subjob purposes (and black mage is next... I got them both to the 20s and said I was done), soloing Brutal Sheep in Valkurm Dunes at level 25, and really noticing something for the first time. I was clear of the sheep until the split second just before I hit the zone. I had enough HP to survive, but I wonder how many people have been hit by that last blow right as they were about to zone. I probably ran for 30 seconds without even so much as a "The Brutal Sheep missed Yara" message on my log. Without anything more than anecdotal evidence, I condemn the game as guilty of trying to make sure an aggroed, chasing mob gets one more hit in before you hit the zone... even if you think they're far, far away. Or maybe a lumbering Brutal Sheep *can* outrun stubby Taru legs...

Back in the days when I had just started in Buburimu, I got killed by a bunny just as my Instant Warp scroll kicked in. So there I was, dead in front of the mog house. And it wasn't my first time of warping back into Windy just in time to fall over dead, but the others were from Dia or Poison.

I was soloing white mage at the time, but duly noted for future use.

Ah yes! I partied in Yuhtunga Jungle's entrance one time, and we were fighting a gob that wiped a few members of the party. I told the mages to run and then I voked the gob and ran for the zone. I was far enough away from the gob that I got to the zone, and the screen even blacked out like I made it to the Kazham zone, however the game de-zoned me and gave some message like..."You were unable to make it to the next area." "Goblin scores a critical hit! Durahansolo takes 180 damage." "Durahansolo was defeated by the Goblin." I was like dude wtf.

And just FYI, it is possible to zone into the next area and be dead. Happened to me a few times.

Yeah, I just thought it was weird that I made it to the zone and the screen went black then came back up in Yuhtunga with that "You were unable to make it to the next area." message. This was like 3 years ago and I hadn't been playing the game very long at that time, so it was new to me.

I've seen that message several times in the Dunes. It's just lag between the server knowing you're dead and the client picking up on it & keeping you from starting to zone to begin with.

                            Camping Sandworm.

                            I hate it.

I love the concept of being sucked into a battlefield. That's AWESOME. I hate that it's a 4-5 hour window (we're still not sure yet) that is seemingly un-intervaled (though I think it is, I'm told it's not) and pops throughout multiple zones, and ON TOP OF THAT, pops multiple places in these multiple zones.

We're not a big linkshell. We have 32 on the active members list now, and we often do with 6-12 what most linkshells need, well, twice as many people for.

So you can see how camping Sandworm sucks. I don't have RNG high enough to scan a huge area, so I have to run around scanning. As opposed to the people in the "hey we recruit everybody" linkshells who can stay where they are and have 4 people in a zone to claim and hold it. If I claim, I'm soloing that bitch for a bit. I don't mind that. But I do mind that I have to basically be watching Wide Scan like a hawk for up to five hours, only for it to pop when I take 5 minutes to go pee, or for it to pop in another zone entirely.

At least camping kings I know it's over in 3 hours and I only have to focus for about 20 minutes total of those three hours, and I don't have to run around. Even Ixion isn't as bad because you can stand in one place to look for it. But Sandworm sucks.

I actually like the sandworm's design, linkshells on Odin scout in with their RNGs and BSTs and depending on what day it is, one LS will have the other have it. Same with Ixion.

I don't like that most HNMs have one spot they show up in. Mostly because those are the ones most certainly botclaimed. And I don't enjoy just standing around, pissing my life and in-game time doing something that's rarely that productive to start with. At the very least, Ixion and Sandworm add some variety to HNMs that was not there before.

I also like that they give BST and RNG an excuse to be part of the action.

                              • Re: What's your pet peeve in FFXI?

The problem is we'll have six people online, none of which are tanks, 3 of which have RNG, etc. And then they'll want to go camp which is pointless because: A. we can't even cover all the zones, B. we don't have a tank, and C. we don't have the people to kill it even if we did have a tank.

I would hate it a lot less if I at least knew the concrete times it could pop at. 10 minutes? 25? 30? 1 hour? Something. I can not stand spamming Wide Scan for five hours with no real clue as to if/when it's popping. Would be so much better if we KNEW that it had intervals, and what they were.

Ixion is better because we won't camp if there's no tank online, and we know it's intervaled, can not pop during Campaign battle, and it pops in one spot. You really can't bot either of these NMs, but Ixion is clearly less annoying IMO because it doesn't require you to have 4 people in the zone just to make sure you have all the pop spots covered.

/RNG Widescan is not that big. It really sucks to scan that shit when you have to run around, and REALLY sucks if you have to go to a huge zone like Meriph. The actual battle itself is fun, I just really hate how stupidly long it takes to find this damn thing. And yes, we actually camp it, instead of just hoping to get word that it's up.
