While someone mentioned RP, SE's lack of an RP server.

Seriously SE. Just one. See how it goes.

If they were going to offer players free (one time) transfers to that server it might work. But I don't know that there are honestly enough RPers who play FFXI to make it worthwhile. But heck, maybe they are all just really quiet about it.

Of course, a game doesn't need RP servers to have a thriving RP community (see LOTRO), but it certainly can help to get people together.

Definitely not, but FFXI's RP community is incredibly fragmented, maybe one or two LS per server. It's not really possible to RP in FFXI's community right now because people just treat you like you're freaking insane. Not only would an RP server give the people who really care a place to go, but it would also draw a few people that wouldn't have bothered trying an RP LS to it.

If you're interested in role-play, gather a bunch of your friends, see how many are interested, and start your own shell. From what I've seen, it could be more effective than you would originally think.

But, yes, FFXI is a roleplaying game. Nobody should complain if you decide to take the initiative to roleplay yourself, and to the best of my knowledge, it isn't really looked down upon that much.

But, then again, I have been living in my RDM bubble for my entire FFXI carrer thus far.

There's a big difference between an LS and a server, anyway.

My only one really is not being able to get a party.. sometimes.

Or when a group by me in dunes has a power leveler while I make my own group and actually play the right way. I have nothing against playing without a power leveler its just a bit annoying seeing another group with one. Although I do not mind having my own power leveler. lol

It doesn't help that FFXI's RPers, or at least Midgard's, can't quite bring themselves to agree on details like whether to treat Home Points as real or how to deal with the issue of Job Change or how exactly to interpret certain pieces of flavor text. One RPLS's Vana'diel has a good chance of not being at all compatible with another's. An RP server would not exactly solve that problem. -- Pteryx

There's already enough in FFXI that has to be canon that fighting over details would not really be a major problem. Reality can be interpreted in different ways, there's no reason that's a problem in real life, but we don't put have separate nations for people who believe the glass is half full and people who think it's half empty.

RPers never agree on how to deal with game mechanics anyway. Check any RP forum for any MMORPG and you will see stupid fights over things on every page.

There are, however, real-life wars between people who think a guy who was executed for saying to be nice to each other was God's son and those who think he was just a prophet who misinterpreted what God said and that this other guy later got it right. That's not even getting into the people who think that not only is there no God, but that stimulus-response mechanisms are all that humans really have inside...

In fiction (and thus RP), it works a little differently, though. You have people who tell stories based on the assumption that Home Points are real, and people who tell stories based on the idea that they're not, and you try to have them interact, and things come up that make absolutely no sense in each other's versions of the setting, and you end up stuck unable to reconcile the stories. -- Pteryx

Spending 30+ hours camping an NM over 3 days only to:

                            - go 0/1 on the first, uncontested kill.

                            - get up at god forsaken o'clock to start the second window only to find the friend you called in for TH had inadvertently reset the window by killing a PH

                            - getting in place for the next window and losing the NM to someone who showed up and hour before pop, because my claim ability simply did not go off. I hit it and nothing happened then froze a second or two as the other guy woke up and hit flash.

All for a drop I could easily do without. I swear I have bizarre NM OCD or something.

Yes, and there's a big difference between something as minor as a home point and something that would, depending on what you believe in, change your entire life and moral code.
