It isn't as bad once you figure out how things work. But you are right, the interface is atrocious (PS2 limitations?!) and the "tutorial" text is damn awful. But yeah, once you figure it out it isn't that bad, just pointless.

add to that on the armour side of things the augments are pretty poor,
There's only a few jobs that actually benefit from it and those peices are still situational.
The only thing I like is seeing that some of the recipes of consumables work out cheaper and you get more of the end product.

The system itself is one big abortion.

Synergy is pretty much the worst. It was poorly designed on every level.

The cheat sheet is that you just add fewel until the current elemental load is roughly equivalent to the target amounts and then hit end. Everything else is just so much noise.

FFXI, you're not making it easy for me to check my magic skill levels.

Okay, so apparently that was being caused by Dark Arts. Let's all forget this peeve ever happened and pretend I'm peeved that no one will buy my Ordelle Bronzepieces. Also Phalanx is obnoxiously expensive :/

Wow. I just found myself missing Final Fantasy XI a lot today. These last few days, I've had some time off. And I was so bored because people are busy for the holidays. Only I don't seem to have anything to do. So I'm calling people. But people don't really want to be bothered. So I take long walks around town aimlessly until I get tired of that. And I thought to myself about how, back when I was still playing, this would have never happened. And if all I did was log on and stare aimlessly at the screen, I at least never lacked of people to talk to. Damnit...

Yeah, I saw that the other day. I don't think it's going to amount to much for FFXI. At most we'll see them stop releasing expansions/add-ons for the PS2 a few years down the line, but it's not going to lead to any revolutionary overhauls of the game engine like everyone wants to believe.

FFXI has always been such that if you don't do something within like three months of it coming out, you're going to have a hell of a time ever doing it. Once most of the population has done something, it's a nightmare getting people to go back and do it again so that you can get your clear.

Pretty much this. Every time I did shouts to do the Caturae Fights, I would also get someone thinking they were being intelligent by suggesting that I would get more people if I brew it, even though telling someone who needs the Caturae Fights to "Just brew it" is quite possibly as fuckwitarded a suggestion as you can imagine.
