        Technically it's considered aggro to "healing" but that's often confused with... you know... healing spells. So to clarify, if you sit down to rest your HP/MP, nearby goblins (regardless of level) will run to you and begin attacking. The fun starts when you're level 99 with a million evasion and you sit in front of one outside Basty...

          Could be useful to mention anything that aggros. Just stay out of sight if they are sight based, same with sound and smell. I don't understand the smell ones though because they never have any IIRC.

          And I used to love running around in the dunes aggroing, and linking everything in sight, then warping in front of a lowbie party, especially if it had some one I hated in it.

          But, use this for any information needs, it helps quite a bit. -> FFXIclopedia, the Final Fantasy XI wiki - Characters, items, jobs, and more

          I would suggest you get familiar with mobs that link, and aggro.

              MOBs don't aggro to smell, they track based on it. Anything that tracks based on smell also aggros to either Sight or Sound. What smell does (and deodorize hides) is the MOBs ability to follow you based on your smell radius. Effectively, it pulls that MOB away from it's typical walking path and makes it follow you until it's in rage to aggro you. You'll almost NEVER need to worry about that at all... since by the time you're in smell range, you're typically already in trouble.

              Interestingly... there are 2 MOBs in the game that track you (although I don't think it's based on smell) but do not aggro you unless you aggro them first.

              * Fish in Sea will come out of the water and follow you without ever aggroing you.

              * Tiny Mandragoras outside of Windurst {s} also follow you without aggroing.

              ---------- Post added at 11:10 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:05 PM ----------

              Aggro = Aggressive

              When someone says a monster aggros you... it means it's following you and about to attack you.

              Linking is when certain monster types will aggro you because another monster of the same type is already aggro to you.

              Example: You attack a Pugil in Qufim Island. That Pugil is near another Pugil. That second Pugil now aggros to you because you attacked the first one. Aggro radius expands from the MOB, not you. Monsters that aggro to you without you having to do anything to them first are especially dangerous in this respect. That being said... not ever monster links.

              ---------- Post added at 11:15 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:10 PM ----------

              Linking Diagram:

              You = *
              Monster = ^

              * - You attack the one on the left.
              |(pew)

              ^-! ^ ^ ^ ^

              Suddenly... it links with the one next to it...

              *

              ^-! ^-! ^ ^ ^

              and so on...

              *(-.-#)

              ^-! ^-! ^-! ^-! ^-! (rawr im angry as well, I guess)

              and this will keep happening so long as the mobs that are aggressive to you keep coming in contact with other mobs of the same type.... until you either die or run away screaming.

                Wow... I never truly understood Smell throughout my FFXI life because I never bothered asking, but THAT explains why I always felt a mob would try to get in range of me whenever I'm resting.

                Forgot which, but I specifically remember going "Don't come toward me don't come toward me don't come toward me AH HE'S COMING TOWARD ME EVERY SINGLE TIME WHY"!

                  Sitting like a boss?

                  So I tried to do the synthesizing of kits again, this time with my linkshell pitching in to help me out. With all the ingredients in place, I start once again.

                  Crystal breaks. YOU LOSE A FINE PARCHMENT AND AN ENCHANTED INK.

                  So not as bad as last time where I lost EVERYTHING, but still... why'd it have to be the fine parchment? I have the ingredients for everything else BESIDES that. I swear, FFXI wants to keep me below the 10,000gil mark :<
                  So ends the tale of Nestama the Galka in FFXI~

                    I was the same way. I always thought that smell caused the mobs to aggro. Not to come near you.

                        yeah the spell deodorize was most useful on a mage job, or Ranger or anything that could stop the mob in it's tracks, and you run off a ways, and then deodorize yourself, the mob wouldn't chase you. then SE changed the aggro mechanics to just despawn the mobs if you had movement speed and got far enough away. and deodorize became .... pointless.

                          They changed it because people where training the Scorpion NM to the top of Garlage Citadel, and killing all the people there at the entrance, and MPKing all others with aggro mobs.

                              I used it for my THF until I got the Raider's Boomerang after crossbow essentially became a useless gil-sink. It was really nice when I was solo'n on NIN or found myself as the puller. ...and I still use it for my 99 BLU if I need to pull something.

                              Aside from Haty, it also drops from an NM in this same area called Bendigeit Vran and he's probably one of the most awesome looking NMs you can come across as a lowbie player, imHo.

                                You can also "deotorize" yourself by running through water, lol... In the Boyadha Tree, if you get aggro by one of the crabs, running through the water makes them stop. Kinda cool... Man, I love reminiscing through FFXI... Those were some great times... /sigh
