Guess part of it was down to Call Wyvern being their two hour. The poor things used to die every other pull and then you're left with a gimped DD with a long arse cooldown.

So I can definitely see the appeal of bringing along a Dragoon, but that it would be preferred over my Mage job is just disheartening, and as you mentioned, it says a lot about how well Red Mage is fairing at the moment. At this point I don't know where SE is taking RDM or even where I want them to take it. They seem to have painted themselves into a corner, committing to ensuring BLM and WHM outshine RDM by quite a lot in their respective fields, but it has left Red Mage without a sense of where it is supposed to fit in the job layout. It's kind of mediocre at everything and the one field it might have had a chance to excel in has been obstructed by design decisions that seem intent on actively stifling any growth in that area.
Honestly, what Abyssea has done is put at the forefront what other people really think about RDM. That the job is there to give people MP and Enfeebling is a very distant second.

Back when Visions of Abyssea was first released, there was always room for RDM in the group. Not only that, but I felt it had made Enfeebling magic endgame relevant. Before everybody was riding on the overblown effects of Atma, Abyssea NMs were actually difficult to kill. The nice thing was that Enfeebles like Paralyze actually landed on them.

We did get nice, if flawed, Enfeeble related updates. Saboteur is something people have been asking for since the release of the game. Addle was something new. Our Empyrean armor supports our enfeebling magic very much so. I think our updates certainly trump anything many other jobs got. But I don't think it really matters how potent we may think Enfeebling magic is. We could get a debuff that causes the mob to occasionally attack itself in confusion and it wouldn't matter.

Because now that everybody has Atma, it just illustrates to me that people wanted the job to be a Refresher first and foremost. Take out the need for MP regeneration, and you take out the need for RDM. Everything in Abyssea can be duoed. People no longer ask a question like "Will this make a fight easier?" They ask "Whose contributions are non-essential enough to cut out of the lot pool?" The answer whoever cannot proc all the weakness staggers. That system was designed completely arbitrarily. They could've very well made Bio III or Helixes proc spells if they wanted to. But they didn't.

I'm betting every alliance makes room for a RDM on Voidwatch though, since some of these NMs don't play games and nobody as Mimikin Monstrosity to rely on. But then I still have a problem with the reliance on the whole proc system, expanded from Abyssea. We've done a couple of Voidwatch battles lately where the Job Ability proc ended up being PUP and we regretted the decision to make somebody else come on a job that wasn't PUP. But this is completely unrelated to whether or not PUP is actually any good for these fights. To me, jobs ought to be wanted because they're useful. Not because an arbitrary FFXI version of affirmative action dictates them to be so.

If this doesn't scream of a huge, gaping flaw in FFXI game design at the moment, I don't know what could.

It's really annoying to me that people only pop in the LS to ask for help. If no one is available, they immediately leave and go to another LS (presumably to ask for help there). I'm fine with helping people, but it just irks me when people do that.

I would get tells occasionally from someone who saw that I had bought the last of whatever mid level gear they were looking for, in the hopes that I didn't need it anymore and would be willing to sell it. While at first I thought it was weird, I guess the state of mid-level gear in the game today almost required it.

See, I would understand that, but I've never purchased the set the guy was asking for. It came off as really weird.

I did that once for Nigtmare Gloves. Back on Kujata... only 3 had ever made the AH... and all for around 10k. They are hard to come by... and although ultimately useless... I was trying to build a good set for Diabolos at the time... and wanted them. What I did was go onto the AH and see who the last one was sold TO... and sent him a private message asking if he still wanted them... and offering twice what he paid for them in return. Done that a few times actually.

My last reply was kind of heavy so let's lighten it up a bit.

Somebody I know has an experience that tops mine though. Apparently, he had one of those truly paranoid LS leaders who always suspected his LS was disloyal or skirting responsibilities to the LS.

He logged on, and before the "Welcome to Siren" message even appeared, he got a tell asking where he has been.

The pot fight for CoP 8-3. I saw a BST solo it, and I know a BLM is almost necessary. However, we don't have either of those in our LS that is that far into CoP yet.

Does anyone think a Fell Cleave strategy might work? Two White Mages taking turns with the Cures to keep mp high, and keep most people except the one Warrior out of -ga3 range?
