Ketaru: I have nothing against Chant du Cygne itself; if it ends up being such a dramatic dealbreaker, I'll work on upgrading a Badelaire like you. It's just the Almace that disgusts me so much.
Is it the requirements to acquire it or the visual design? Because I can totally relate to hating the airplane wing look of it and that's part of the reason I haven't really given much consideration to making one.
Not only the visual design, but the weaksauce lore for what ended up being an absurdly powerful Sword.
Even if I did .dat swap, TM, just about everybody else would still see that eyesore, so it's not quite as comforting.
I don't really get the lore part of it. Abyssea's backstory is pretty weak, but as for the story behind Walk of Echoes, the Book of Genesis it is not. Personally, I only worked on the lesser weapon of the two knowing it is inferior because I like to play this game on my own time and I really didn't want to feel compelled to log on a schedule to work on it. Yeah, making 1 Empyrean doesn't take that long if you really haul ass. But it wouldn't just be my Empyrean. It would be one for everybody in the group.
If you don't mind the grinding, just go for the real deal. Personally, I'm always going to play with doubts like, "Yeah, it's pretty hot. But what could it have been?"
As for aesthetics, this game has never had pleasing aesthetics as far as gear goes. Right now, we're see DRKs wearing trousers beneath all that heavy armor because many feel like they need to use Calmecac Trousers. I'm don't know much about DRK gear so maybe Calmecacs are really gimp for DRK or really godly. But to me, worrying about aesthetics in this game really doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
Unless you don't gear swap, which is something else that needs to be addressed entirely.
I'd expect more out of Empyrean Weapons, as the new breed of "ultimate" weapons. Maybe Moogles make miserable myth makers? At any rate, it would be ridiculous for me to hold the "penultimate" weapons to the same expectations.
Concerning the Almace specifically, it holds similar legendary roots to Durendal, Joyeuse, and Curtana, but its merits basically end there. It was basically just given to a priest and never mentioned again until said priest died with it in battle. Gee, nice message to send to not only RDMs, but PLDs and BLUs as well, S-E! And this on top of the issue of it looking like something the Buster Sword threw up. The fact that this legendary footnote outperforms freaking Excalibur just burns me to no end.
I mean, Excalibur. You know, SWORD OF POWER, forged when the world was young, man/bird/beast/flower were one, death was but a dream, all that stuff? Cookie if you get the reference.

More like something the people that designed this game's great swords threw up.

Not really sure what reference this is but Excalibur has always been the sword-of-not-dying >_> Its sheath at least.
I suppose that's just really what they wanted when it came to the Empyrean weapons. They are all big and in-your-face (...I suppose I'm setting myself up for a that's-what-she-said moment) and are supposed to be the first distinguishable feature when you see somebody who has one. Can't deny it. Almace is kind of hard to ignore.

On that note, I've been poking around some more and it looks like the dust hasn't really settled on that issue yet. CDC is riding high because it's a crit-based WS and Abyssea makes those broken, but outside it's less clear. Honestly, I'd just gun for the Excalibur if I were you. It's a damn fine sword by all accounts and as Romyro has shown us, it's now possible to hammer out a relic without a ginormous Dynamis shell sponsoring it.

Ah, you meant the story behind the name itself rather than the in-game origin. Swords have had it relatively good for a while, though. Look at the relic knife and h2h weapon. They're just ancient and/or primitive weaponry. Nothing mythological at all.
