I know you don't want to hear this, but even if you're dead set on meleeing, a non-melee sub is almost always going to bring tools to the table that are more important than slightly less gimp melee damage, and in the rare case that they don't, pld really has less to offer than the other 5 melee sub options.

This may not help, but /dnc is better than /nin for rdm when you don't expect to use utusemi, and Xcal is better for rdm than Almace due to the massive attack bonus.

Point is that until that level his options for how to melee poorly don't diverge.

Really? I was under the impression that CDC + ODD aftermath crushed Excalibur pretty thoroughly.

I don't see why that would be the case when Xcal occasionally deals 2.5x damage natively. There's also the significant extra damage from Xcal's additional effect. I can't say I know anyone who's tested with each to verify.

The general consensus I've seen elsewhere however seemed to think Almace was a pretty clear winner due to a better WS and the ODD proccing more frequently.

I could be wrong though. I've never crunched any numbers on either of them.

Maybe. I dunno. It would depend on proc rates of various things. Never said it was a turd polishing contest, anyway, and I never said it wasn't.

When would that be? We have well geared RDMs in my LS at 95 and their melee is still laughable. You want to do melee dmg, play a melee job. I could wear no gear and use a single dagger and my DNC or THF would still out-dmg them
You know, I'm mostly disinterested in talking about the subject these days. But I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest you're just trying to irritate YM with a statement like that, because you know with the kind of emphasis placed on gear to improve melee performance in this game, that simply cannot be true and is just the sort of flame baiting comments Official Forum nutjobs like to resort to just to get a rise out of people.

I think YM is putting too much weight on other people's opinion on the subject. So, here's mine:

Ask yourself this: Am I having fun meleeing as a RDM?

If the answer is yes then just stop comparing yourself to others already and start playing for yourself. If the answer is no then stop wasting time and level another job to cover the melee part of your gameplay.

And yeah, the rest of you are being kind of much more mean-spirited than that. I came to this thread to rant about the way I'm wanting to play being subpar even among the subpar, and all I get is scathing sarcasm and ridicule. Gee, thanks a lot, guys.

But yeah. Re: Raydeus, I was starting to question why I'm even playing, and while I can conclude that it is, in fact, mostly for myself, I'm also playing because I can't shake this nagging feeling that I've got something to prove, that I am able to hold my own and back my words up, in spite of all the mockery. It's been something of a painful peer pressure, to be honest. But now I have a feeling that those dreams have been crushed, and this simply being provoked from the realization that I've been underestimating Dual Wield this entire time. But I didn't want to play just another Dual Wielder; I wanted to play a mage-knight, complete with Shield in hand for the sake of bolstering myself and others. I had briefly considered taking up PLD/RDM instead of the other way around like I was planning for the past . . . has it really been five years now? Dang. But, yeah, until S-E nerfed the crap out of that. And it seems that these days, the Red Mage has been reduced to the role of a mere mage-squire, and Paladin these days doesn't look that much more appealing. And don't even get me started on that ugly Almace that has been made the pinnacle of damage capabilities of primarily Sword-wielding jobs . . . ugh!

So, why am I playing, then? I've always had a hope that, by the time I got to level cap, things would change. Well, because of school duties and the like, things certainly have changed (including the level cap itself), and while I like Red Mage's current position much more than when everyone that was playing it was a wanna-be White Mage . . . I don't know. I guess I'll see what happens when I get there. Perhaps I will get that Excalibur and upgrade it all the way, just for the sake of being the person to test something that nobody else cares about. Who knows.

I would vent more, but I'm running out of thoughts currently in my head, and laundry needed switching half an hour ago. I will say this, though: if I ever leveled Blue Mage, it would be purely as a healer. Just out of spite.

TM, I understand sunk costs, and I understand not to care about them, and quite frankly I don't. Still, I yet feel that I don't really have any right to quit until I reach level cap, or at least close enough. I would not only be depriving myself of whatever the flavor-of-the-month endgame experience is at the time (to be cynical about the subject), but I'd also be depriving myself of several storylines' worth of content, of which I would be able to solo most, if not all of it at the new cap, thereby granting me no excuse.

Aside, it's not like the future of the game is 100% hopeless for me. The community team at the official has mentioned repeatedly in the past the portion of the Job Manifesto wherein they wanted to adjust each job's available Weapon skills (and I'm guessing this implies both Skill level and WS availability) and, on a more minor note, job-specific Merit revisions. Hopefully it will at least be worth seeing how this pans out. Though, if they end up giving RDM native EX Sword Weapon Skills, I might as well get /SMN instead of /PLD if I wanted Auto Refresh; at least /SMN would give me freaking Hastega at 96. (I'd probably end up taking either /BLU or even freaking /DRK after that for melee, if I haven't already quit outright by then.)
