What options do you like? Speaking from a personal standpoint, I prefer my RDMs to be /blm or /whm.

Shit's situational.

/BLM for stunsies and sleepga
/WHM mainly for Stona or if you need to hand out barspells
/SCH for nuking or if you're going to be bouncing between offense and defense all night
/NIN for melee or soloing/holding NMs
/DNC for people who feel their macro palette isn't cluttered enough already
/BLU for Cocoon
/WAR for people who like to single-wield
/DRK for people who like to single-wield but also need stun

There's simply too many variables to say one option is simply "best". Sub-jobs are situational. I've had plenty of nights where I roll out of the mog house with one sub-job and spend the rest of the night kicking myself because another was more suited to the task at hand.

I've actually found myself coming to stuff /SCH less and less lately. Stun is sexy and petrification effects are problematic enough that we usually want more than just the White Mages clearing them away if possible.

If they actually end up handing out helix spells via subjob next update though, I'll probably run around /SCH until I'm told to knock it off because damn are those things sexy.

The only question I asked was for YM's opinion on what options he liked (since he doesn't care for /nin). I simply gave my personal preference based on the situation's that I *usually find myself in. I am aware that there are countless situations that require different subjobs, I just gave my broad-spectrum preference.

Well, I liked /PLD largely because it gave both EX Weaponskills and Auto Refresh (and Flash and a handful of other things). Chant du Cygne, killing two of my dreams with one stone, isn't even an EX Weaponskill, though, and any situations wherein I can (logically) justify using a Shield would usually involve Genbu's and/or the Shield Mastery Trait which I will have natively at level 87.

I'm just annoyed since RDM melee is already widely regarded as, at best, a practice in mediocrity; I feel terrible exacerbating the issue by performing subpar even by those standards, which I will be in almost every situation simply for not having Dual Wield. At best, single-wielding would let me build a multi-attack Sanguine Blade spam build, and even then only because I wouldn't get Sanguine Blade with a Dual Wield sub (which, now I understand why so many Red Mages were so indignant about that fact). And even then, I don't know whether or not a single-wielded Swan Song build would beat it out or not, never mind a Dual Wielded one where one could simply throw the multi-attack spam in the off-hand!

Argh! If only BLU's Dual Wield were subbable. Or if only we a) had native Fencer, and b) Fencer was actually worthwhile. Yeah, I'm pretty peeved about it all, but there's pretty much nothing I can do about it at all until I get my Red Mage to the point where it matters. =/

Red Mage to the point where it matters.

When would that be? We have well geared RDMs in my LS at 95 and their melee is still laughable. You want to do melee dmg, play a melee job. I could wear no gear and use a single dagger and my DNC or THF would still out-dmg them.

I would say, though, that you may be stressing too much about making your rdm melee super optimal. Let's be honest, it's hard enough turning a pld or blu into a respectable melee DD, and they have native access to EX skills, much higher skill and dual wield, in blu's case. I know you don't want to hear this, but even if you're dead set on meleeing, a non-melee sub is almost always going to bring tools to the table that are more important than slightly less gimp melee damage, and in the rare case that they don't, pld really has less to offer than the other 5 melee sub options.

I'm going to guess it would be the point where he has enough sword skill for Sanguine, Auto Refresh and Flash are available from /pld, and he can equip an Almace.
