other than stated before with ppl telling you how to do your job would be ppl who /check you... theres no reason to check me at ALL. if you cant tell my job/level you're a noob and dont need to know, or im on a low level job and it doesnt matter what level i am. ppl recently have been thinking that your SUPPOSED to check EVERYONE, this is not true. since beta it has always been considered rude at best. im guessing the huge increase of the /check abuse is due to wowtards and the such... dunno but it is rude, uncalled for and i do know for a fact that GM's will jail a player for it as it can be considered harassment if abused for sure. If a person is wearing something super epic or something you have never seen talk to them.....you might learn something and might avoid a trip to the /blist

Haven't heard that one in several years. I personally /sea people if I want to know their job and level just out of longstanding habit, but I don't understand why anyone cares. Occasionally if I see someone with a cool looking piece of equipment I don't recognize, I'll ask them what it is and they act like I'm a moron for not just /checking them. Iirc, the only reason it offended JPs is that the wording on the /check notice is slightly dirty. I keep /check notices filtered for myself because I don't particularly care who's looking at my gear and I don't need to know.

Btw, there's no way a GM is going to act on a player /checking you unless they're spamming the heck out of it to flood your chat log or the like.

I /checked everyone I ran into when I was in a party with them to see their gear, and if they where geared decently, or if they where on a job I planned to level, I would /check them to see what gear would be decent at that level if I liked it or not.

Nothing is wrong with /checking some one, its only when they comment on your gear that its bad or something that's bad, especially in town when you just leveled up, and can't get some gear.

I don't know why some people get bent out of shape when you /check some one. Just must be some people who think that no one should know what their gear is only get bent out of shape.

I used to play wow as well, and not everyone who plays wow is a wowtard. Also, I have had many people /check me as well, and I've never got bent out of shape before, until a bunch of japs just sat there /checking me one time lol.

Think about this for a moment. It's a Japanese game, made by a Japanese developer, written by people fluent in Japanese with a Japanese audience as one of the primary markets.

The "it's rude in Japanese so I don't do it" was weeaboos trying to look like they knew Japanese and Japanese customs.

If /check bothers you so much, filter it out. That or /blist is all a GM is going to tell you to do as well. They are not going to jail a player for /check. You probably also need to take some anger management classes.

They use Japanese words but usually end up pronouncing them wrong and sounding like total assholes. You can find alot of these faggots clogging up the forums of Gaia Online, hanging out in the international aisle of the supermarket, or crowding the manga section of your local bookstore.

When the forums were young and everyone that played was an importer, there was a "when in Rome" aspect to it, because almost the entire playerbase was JP and their customs were observed by people just to get along. Then at the NA release, the entire high level playerbase was JP so it was a "respect your elders" kind of thing, since anyone with cool gear worth checking was probably JP. While it's still (I assume) polite not to check JPs, abstaining from it entirely at this point is pretty silly.

there is no reason to get bent out of shape for someone /checking you. I will /check every person I see if I feel inclined. It has never been considered rude unless your extremely pretenious. It is nice to see what gear people have that might help me and my playing experience be that much better. I wouldn't ever comment on how shitty I think it is. No GM would ever jail a player for checking. Give your head a shake.

And there are a number of classes that share the same gear or look very similar due to "PS2 limitations" and the lack of gear appearance variety it causes. If you're going to get all bent out of shape about checks then filter them out.

FFXI is also a game where nine times out of ten skill > gear for performance. I've seen some undergeared people perform extremely well because they were simply good at their job.

I know this is a common mantra but I've never been thoroughly convinced of it. For mage jobs, sure up to a point. For standard DD jobs, not so much.

Depends on where in the spectrum you're looking. Someone with decent gear is probably 10x more effective than someone with gimp gear, but someone with elite gear might only be 10% more effective than someone with decent gear, and the 10% might disappear is the uber-geared player sucks and the decent-geared player is uber. Depends on the job and gear in question of course.
