/nin isn't effective until lvl 24 anyways. I would prefer there be some one /war pre lvl 20, maybe even to lvl 27 if they are any good at tanking. /Drk isn't that great, and /drg doesn't offer anything much anyways. Sure, jump is nice free TP, but /Rng is better if your job has a decent RACC, and can use Crossbows. Drk/Rng in low levels is pretty good, and even better after they get the accuracy bonus from Ranger.
/NIN is effective starting at 20 for one-handers. As for DRK and DRG, 10 Attack at level 20 is nothing to sneeze at, and for 2-handers which can only attack 10-11 times at best in 90 secs of nonstop fighting, Jump is a pretty big deal. Also Last Resort is going to last 2/5 minutes now, making it a decent mini-Berserk (+14% Attack -14% Defense) pre-30. /RNG is good regardless of your ability to use Xbows since the Accuracy Bonus applies to melee attacks as well, although Xbow is definitely the best reason to use it.

/WAR is only good if the tank is in a pinch, and multiple /WARs is redundant for that purpose. I'd rather have 2-3 /WHM DDs to help prevent the tank from needing a backup Provoke in the first place over 3 backup vokes.

I may have done this one before, but if so I'll do it again.

Besieged comes way too fast these days. I had just started a Dynamis Valkurm run, and the trolls were at level 1 preparing. By the time we finished (with the TE) less than two hours later, they were already attacking at level 6.

Back in the bad old days, it took 30-60 minutes per level of Preparing, plus another half an hour or more in the Advancing stage. Apparently killing a lot of pink birds somehow slows them down during the preparing phase.

Black Mages with no sense of self preservation.

Last night me and two LS mates helped some random Black Mage farm seals off some antlion NM. The dude spent the whole time sitting in red HP and zombie-ing. He didn't even bother to cast Drain unless it was to proc a weakness. He also aggroed damn near every link that came within sight of the party. It was impressive in a tragic and infuriating sort of way. We all agreed he was a pretty terrible BLM and bailed on him.

Actually realizing what’s involved after you started leveling a new job…

Not so much a pet peeve I guess but…where else am I gonna bitch about it.

I decided to level Nin after thinking about it for a few months. My duo buddy made my decision official by making me stay after I hit subjob level.
Got it from 41-60 the other day. I was excited until I realized what I have to look forward to

            Ninjutus Skills
            Katanas Skills
Parry Skills (not sure how to do this tbh)

              If I may...

Parry Skill is the worst part of that entire list. In order for Parry to have a chance at skilling... it needs to proc, right? So we have to look at the order in which things proc.

              Evasion -> Parry -> Shadows

Because Evasion is a lot easier to proc... and thus... skill... it becomes harder and harder to skill up parry as you get into the higher levels.

Also inportant to note is that you have to be engaged with a mob (attacking) and facing it at the same time in order for the bility to proc... so you cant just turn away and go make a sammich.

The 2 best ways I've found to skill it are as follows (and usually used together).

1: Equip as much -Evasion Gear as you possibly can. Hauby works well... as does spelunkers (if you have it).

              and/or

2: Target a mob... hit it once and then "switch targets" to another mob behind it. That way... you're engaged... facing the mob.... and not hitting it/killing it.

Both methods are a uge pain in the ass. 4 months into being level 90 and my parry is still only 130. Good luck!

              Next up... your "Other" merits:

              Enmity/Spell intrup Merits...

I agree on Spell interupt... but I would suggest that you go with "Crit hit rate +" instead of enmity. Although enmity was a huge factor before... it's less so now. A lot of gear has it integrated in based on the jobs it's best for. Meriting it will be minimal... if effective at all. Crit hit rate will be a lot better for you in the long run.

              Now for: ToM Evasion Katanas...

If you read up in wiki on where it's best to go for each stage... you'll be fine. Especially as you get closer to the final trials. For the last 4 of them, I went where the wiki said I should and made sure it was Windsday when i did... and encountered full alliances of people doing the same thing. We burned through them quick.

Bitter Corset would be awesome (-20 evasion), but it's from a ToAU ISNM primarily for PUP parts, all craftable. (also some tier IV spells, and a 100% chance of a Chocobo Egg for some reason) As if people who aren't Besieged regulars have 3000 ISNM these days. The last time one was seen on the Sylph AH is five months ago, and the last one that sold was back in September.

Do the testing in a city just outside the mog house. When you've tried an attempt, zone in the mog, change jobs (and then change back) and the job timers will be reset. Will work with any job timer except your two-hour.

                    • Re: What's your pet peeve in FFXI?

Long post here…sorry. It’s early and I’m already bored at work.

I’m not sure how much effort I’ll put into lvling parry. Its sitting at 160 atm(not sure how its that high tbh). If I do, it will probably be the last thing I work on.

I agree on Spell interrupt... but I would suggest that you go with "Crit hit rate +" instead of enmity. Although enmity was a huge factor before... it's less so now. Crit is maxed out already. I probably shoulda clarified that better. That part is more for when the update comes out with additional merits. Probably going with
                      Crit – 5, Sp It – 3, Enm+ - 2

But haven’t fully decided. Might just stick with full Spell Interrupt as to not screw up anything on Blm/Smn/Whm…but then again I like it for Bst/Pup lol. Decisions decisions…

                      Now for: ToM Evasion Katanas...
If you read up in wiki on where it's best to go for each stage... you'll be fine. Especially as you get closer to the final trials. Yeah I just looked at all the trials on the main ‘katana trials’ page and to be honest only the 50 fugars look semi difficult lol. The whole path looks pretty damn easy. And a lot of trials can be done in Wajam (if windsday is too far). Your talking to a guy that’s finished 5 axes, 2 h2h, and almost 3 staves…what’s another katana or 2 right? If I can get through 600 Gnole & 400 Apkallu trials (pre-Abyssea mind you), I’m sure I can easily get though some eva trials.

I’ll be doing 1 eva katana for the off hand for sure. But I’m seriously considering doing the lolEmp (WoE version) katana. I just need to research WoE. Worst comes to worst…I’ll do the Atk one. Abyssea has been a godsend for trails since one can rip though mobs with the right Atmas.

                      ---
-My thoughts on Nin so far-
I loving it actually, although I haven’t done much ‘real’ combat with it (at least not between 41-63)…not too excited about the ~350k ish I dropped for scrolls/tools…but that’s actually a drop in the bucket compared to what I spent for pup…(fuckin 8-10m in attachments ><)

Just hit 63 last night. Not sure if I’ll get anywhere on it tonight though. Goal is to at least get to 75 ish so I can join parties and actually participate. I’ve been leeching off my War friend whose basically been hitting Hero zones and working on his skill ups. So picture a 90 War, with a somewhat gimpy GS skill killing raptors in Aby-Ule…not exactly the fastest lol.

Oddly enough though, on my 63 Nin with Atmas, I was able to occasionally land hits for upwards of 20 damage lol.

Saddly though, i’ll probably be a pink nin at 90 for the first week or so…
