Been feeling rather lukewarm about the game lately. Kind of hard to enjoy when you're worried about finding a better job. But can't job search 24/7. Somebody give me a topic to get morally outraged about in the game so I can make a 3 paragraph long reply.

You could rant about the assumptions players make with increasing frequency automatically connecting magic use with the support role.

Since you made mention of it in the XIV thread, and you're looking for a cause here, I felt it was a natural subject to touch upon.

Well, in all fairness, I've never seen anyone support someone with a sword. Unless by "support" you mean "kill that monster."

Plus, one of the revealed jobs already looked like it's a nuker type.

Certainly not, but one of the "support" jobs in the game uses a gun. Honestly, defining support in this game is pretty muddy and seems more to be about why you invite certain jobs to your group. You invite tanks, damage dealers, healers, and support. I think people think of support as:

Improving the performance of other players, worsening the performance of the target...

DRKs are both capable of a small range of enfeebles (and are even invited to certain things specifically because of their ability to cast Stun). Does that put DRK somewhere at least partly on a continuum of support?

COR doesn't need a gun to perform its rolls, but it needs one to perform Quick Draws.

DNC must melee in order to perform some of its key abilities that range from healing to enhancing to enfeebling.

THF's hate control (and to a lesser degree, DRG or BST's hate shedding) like Accomplice and Collaborator are undoubtedly "support", if a somewhat under-realized type of it. It doesn't require them to be meleeing, but it is coming from a job that is typically seen as a damage dealer first and nothing else second.

Well, the point wasn't so much that no support jobs actually fight as much as it was that most of them are mages or have mage-compatible attire, for obvious reasons. It's far easier to explain "I'm raising your stats!" or "I'm making your performance suck!" as a game mechanism by associating it with some form of magic. Even DNC, which technically needs to fight to do it, buffs you by dancing, not through some sort of weird weapon/combat magic. The need for TP is simply there for the sake of making interesting and balanced gameplay mechanics.

I think it's pretty much agreed upon that for a support job to be considered a support job first and foremost, buffing and debuffing needs to be the main thing it brings to the table. This is not the case for DRK or THF, which can arguably still be an asset to the party even when they can't use their respective gimmicks for X or Y reason. But a BRD that can't sing is pretty much dead weight.

COR is probably the only job that lies smack dab in the middle of being a DD and being a support job. Their buffs are tremendous but their damage is not negligible in any way either.

            • Re: What's your pet peeve in FFXI?

It is easy to label jobs based on the function they are invited to serve within a group. But a job like DNC, for example, can just easily be a damage dealer (albeit not the best) as it can become a pure healer (once again, though not the best). But if you're going to say it's less about whether the unit is meleeing or not, and more about what abilities and spells are at the job's disposal, that still leads me to say describing exactly what a "Support Job" is can be tough. Even WHM, the representation of healer in this game, can enfeeble and enhance.

What is the purpose of the spell Stun, Sleep, Bind, or Tractor, and why can DRK use them, in other words? I'm not saying DRK ranks very high in its ability to perform support, but it definitely higher in that list than, say, MNK. If COR is the one job you would say muddles the definition of a DD and a support job (though I'd argue so is DNC), I'd say MNK is the one job which is the one job that is unequivocally damage dealing, though they are capable of a precious few other things, if just to add variety to the job.

But the jobs themselves don't come with these labels. The individual spells and abilities don't either, but I think they're easier to classify than the jobs themselves.

What the heck is up with all the RMT spammage lately? I'm tired, I log on briefly, and every 2 minutes am sent a /tell on where to sell gil. I Blist the person since it's not the regular /tell in passing like other ones are, and another person starts sending /tells. I would up blisting 5 different people tonight -.-

Why the hell can't they just leave us alone?

You have the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be misqouted and then used against you.

Why do people think blisting helps at all with throwaway accounts? Those accounts will get banned in under an hour, and NEVER appear again. And the RMT spammers know it.

I'm really disappointed in SE for letting it go on this long, especially after the recent gardening patch that limited the results to quanity 1 for trial and "young" accounts. It should be trivial to detect this behavior and flag the account for a quick banning, even without looking at the content of the messages.

What really disturbs me is that the gil price in the spams has gone down lately. Not as much as with the water crystal gardening madness, but clearly they have found a new source of gil, and it may be through account hijackings. (Or maybe I'm all wrong and it's just that they haven't been mass-banned recently enough and have had enough time to accumulate a big pile of gil anyhow.)

I think trial accounts shouldn't be able to use /tell functions. Real players could still get into parties. The beginer party areas usually have places people congregate before a party is formed, they could still speak to others via /s and /sh. The trial is a nice idea but is seriously flawed. I'm sick of RMT tells.
Reporting to a GM is no good anymore they ask you to go offline and fill in an online form to the stfu team, So we have to log out of the game to remove people that shouldn't be there in the first place?
With the recent gardening bannings it shows that people can be banned for any reason they choose if it flags what they seem as wrong, I'm sure it can be applied to chats also and pick up on anything resembling an advert.
Whats even more annoying it doesnt matter where you are they still bug you. If I see a friend in a promyvion area or other such place I know it's best not to bug them, Yet the Rmt are relentless and rude during the mammet battle I managed to recieve 2 /t's from rmt before we were owned badly and that only lasted a few minutes.

I can tell you right now that would have turned me off to the game so fast it'd make your head spin. RMTs are problematic but that's no reason to completely and totally shaft people who are trying to get into the game.

But why should the people on trial accounts have everything available to them?
Most of us never had the option of trying the game out before we bought it, We just took the risk when we purchased it that it's be a good game which we'd like.
It's not as if restricting the /t's hurts them they still have a method to comunicate. unless you're a cybering manthra / cecil privacy shouldn't be much of an issue, There's stil /l and /p to chat in also. In Rl you wouldnt walk up to somebody then drag them into a corner to talk, you'd normally speak in front of people and be overheard by some others. It's not like it'd be restricting them purchasing items or changing equipment. It'd just restrict the direct txt assaults we recieve as we try to enjoy the game we pay for.
Or make it so they can only respond to /t's they recieve. In fact having a button to respond to the last recieved /t I'd like personally. Especially with names that are stressful to type. (If there's something like that already I apologise I dont know about it)

CTRL + R = respond to the last person who sent you a tell. If you hit it several times, it'll cycle through the last 5 (or so) people who have sent you tells.

How many people are usually sending you tells at the same time? If you go to the chat screen you can change it to a person you've talked to (or I think /check'ed) recently and then instead of defaulting to Say when you start typing it'll default to Tell and send a tell to that person. This way you don't have to type /t or the person's name IIRC.

Dammit aks beat me I also didn't know there was a keyboard command for it, nice.

I usually chat to about 4/5 people at once. I imagine in your Ls you have a person like me. There always seems to be one lol. I mt a fair bit. In both of my Ls I'm quite famous for the things I've accidentally said. It's worse now I've made friends with some people on my server that are local so we chat a fair bit. I tend to emote a litle too. lol
