You're right, I suppose. I wish there was less of a correlation between the two, though. It'd be nice to be able to use the game to escape the rat race rather than continuing it in a new forum.

I couldn't agree more. I remember the old days and whenever I start a new MMO I always think, very briefly, that maybe things might be different this time.

Unless you're doing the missions, FFXI's later game falls into this category at least sometimes, if not often. (Show me someone who's brain hasn't melted at least once hunting Collibri). There's a great deal of mindless repetition later on. As long as you have these kind of competitive time sinks, it's difficult to establish a cooperative, supportive community of any kind.

You are aware that SE forces no one to do HNMs and that there is much, much more to do than camp HNMs. There are actually concerns about adding more high level content at this point as you can fill every day in the week with what we have now.

Right now we have:

Dynamis
Limbus
Einherjar
Assault
Nyzul Isle
Salvage
Tiered NMs in Sky, Sea and ToA
Stronghold Notorious Monsters and their specialized BCNMs
Doomvoid NMs
KSNM99s
Even MMM is proving to have high level equipment to persue.

And some of this stuff can be low-manned so you don't have to sit around in Whitegate of rot your brain meritting on Colibri.

People tell me "You just have to find a good shell," and that is a lot easier said than done, but it can be done. TGM is right, getting to achieve all this stuff is more of a social issue within the game.

Big problem is most shells want it all since that will attract more people. This makes endgame really oppressive to the people who are really only interested in a few things. They end up guilting you for not being at every last event, for wanting to enjoy the game on other levels.

But this is why I don't join those shells. I'll admit it flat-out - I care only about what I want, so I join LSes with a smaller focus to get what I'm interested in. If they're cool and a good team, I'll stay with them and support them, but if they're obsessed to the point where they chastise me for wanting a night off from the game or that I'm not skipping work to camp an HNM - fuck them.

Doing everything in endgame at means you'll have to put up with a lot of shit - the way to beat that is not to subscribe to the big shells. If you do subscribe, you have to be willing to put up with lots of shit.

This one is from yesterday. When people used to be members of your linkshell and they see you for the first time in forever, and the first thing they say is "THAT LINKSHELL IS STILL AROUND!?," "WHO'S IN IT???" My response was "We refuse to die, so we're still here." He then had the nerve to say "I used to be in that linkshell." I'm not that forgetful that I forget people who used to be in the linkshell even though we used to be like 25+ big, but most of them decided to leave to a bigger shell for whatever reason. Even though we only have like 12 main members, most of us refuse to use other social linkshells and the only other shells we use are endgame style linkshells. We have devotion unlike certain people who only come to the linkshell when its packed and 9000 people are in it. There might be nobody in the linkshell for weeks or months and then one day we'll all be there at the same time for months. Now that I think about it some more, after this guy left the linkshell he tried to get me to join his. When I refused, he got kinda pissy and annoyed.

So when he asked for a shell yesterday I gave him one. he signed in and immediately signed back out and into his other shell once he saw that there were only like 8 people in it.

Please don't think like one of my friends from in-game that used to carry like 8 linkshells who used to say stuff like "I'm trying to have one of every color." He wasn't really a member of any one of them, he was basically just a leech. Eventually he wanted to be a sackholder and he was denied by the leader and about 3 other sackholders for lack of dedication to the shell and the members in it.

tl;dr version:

If you were a member and you left the linkshell, don't try to get back into the shell just to drool over the famous people in it. If you wanna come back, come back for the nostalgia and the many lol's that we have everyday.

While I'm on the subject, people that use double standards when it comes to rules. It was decided that the sackholders would decide who is a sackholder... Our leader pretty much counts as 2 votes since her bf also plays. One of my in-game friends is her right hand man, so if she says something you can pretty much throw his vote in as counting as well. The other 6 sackholders can go either way. I took a few month break, and it was decided by the linkshell leader on her own that she would give a sack to one of her rl friends that just entered the LS. So of course I get there and I'm like who is this dude and everybody says oh he's the new sackholder, rl friend of the leader. I was like "WTF is that!?"

I'm the type of person that gets into a shell and you can't get rid of me. LOL I'm extremely dedicated and I've only left 3 shells in all my years of playing. Two were newly formed shells, one I left shortly after getting in because the people were too immature. The other shell was formed by all good friends plus a person we'd known a short time. He was the leader (big mistake) and as soon as we started doing endgame stuff, things got suspicious. He decided to synth a Haub very late at night when no one was on with items we worked hard to get. (This was back when Haubs were millions of gilz.) Said he failed the synth the next day but the AH said he had a nice new Serket Ring. He said that he made like 15 pieces of a certain armor and sold them all, in one night, but the ah history said otherwise. Then he changed his story and said he bazaared them but there's no way 15 pieces of this armor would sell in one night. So ya...he screwed us...end of ls. Last shell I left on my own, it was an endgame shell and one of the sacs (who had his head up the leaders ass) was batshit crazy. Seriously. (He really went off the deep end when he left the game.) I saw the handwriting in the wind and left before the shit got crazy in that shell.

Funny thing is, my current shell is dead and I'm still in it. There are days I'm the only one in it. Leader and sacs had a falling out and 90% of the active members left and formed a new endgame shell. So........here I am.......do do do do......twiddling my thumbs waiting for the LEADER to decide what we are going to do. Reform? Break? Go social? JUST GIVE ME A FRICKIN IDEA!! But ya...nothing...and I want to do endgame stuff. I like killing things! It has nothing to do with the shinies, I just like the accomplishment, the social aspect, and keeping friggin busy.

In my Ls there is me and only another member from the uk in the Ls the rest are american players. I tried other shells to use during the daytime here and I felt like I was commiting adultery. I'm fiercely loyal to my shell, it's not too bad with the time difference I tend to go to bed late anyway. Plus when I'm farming I get some peace and quiet lol.

I hate asking for help and only do it when it's totally necessary and even then I feel bad about it. My Ls always help people. I just hate it when I can clearly see people taking advantage of their good nature.

This. I hate this. People should not have 2 social shells. Now I'm sure at least one person here could give a decent example of why they have more than one social ls pearl. But the majority of the time this is just a dumb move, and you will be perceived of as an ass in at least one of those shells.

Edit: I shouldn't have said that last sentence the way I did. It is possible to be a responsible non leeching decent member. It's just been my experience that these multishell holders will spend most of their time in one and bop in to the other(s) when they are bored or need something.

Dang, that's messed up TGM.

Our shell used to be alot bigger around when I first started. We always joke that our linkshell is like Version 6.1 because the original shell was owned by the linkshell leader's boyfriend and it has been reborn 5x since the original. When the linkshell first started, TheEternalFlames was orange, when the current leader took over it turned to kinda a plum/purple color, but since version 3.0 its been orange. The leader used to automatically turn linkpearl carriers until sackholders.

The mayhem originally started back when we did a garrison. We ran into the garrison and we hadn't decided how we were gonna lot drops. The leader kinda confused everybody with her methods and my friend's wife got a garrison armor, I forget which piece it was. Our leader decided, without discussing with anybody else, that she would be collecting the drops and selling them as a whole to split the profits among the group. My friend's wife didn't like this because she won the item and actually wanted to keep it. This started a shouting match and eventually they took off their shells and went to do other stuff. The events that followed came as a result of this garrison.

After this, I took a break from the game for about 2 weeks and when I returned all hell had broken loose and the linkshell had split in half. A friend of mine was in our linkshell with his brother, mother, and wife (Same guy from above paragraph). The leader gave a friend of hers a linksack, mind you we'd never seen the guy before. The guy got into a argument with my friend and threatened to kick him from the linkshell. Then the leader's bf jumped in and said that if the leader took his sack away that he'd kick him from the linkshell, leader jokingly took his sack away and the bf kicked him out. My friend and his family both left the linkshell that day and started their own. I of course carried around both linkshells and our leader was pissed about it for some reason when she found out, but oh well I was equally spending time with my friends. Leader then changed all the linksacks to linkpearls because somebody was kicking all of the new linkpearls out of the linkshell. We ended up finding out it was somebody who had a mule with the sack, we never found out who the person was that did it. Eventually we broke that shell and started over again, not too long after that the leader accidently dropped the linkshell breaking it again so we had to start over. My friend's linkshell phased out and his members joined others and they joined another shell.

I have 2 social linkshells, one is from one group of friends who I've been hanging out with since I started on FFXI. The other is a LS made by a group of friends that I met in the dunes a while back. I split my time between the two pretty well.

My shell is different than most. We actually are not permitted to have the pearl off, unless absolutely NOTHING is going on, and if you probably have a mule with our pearl on just in case something does come up. Ex is all the social ls I need, really. Other HNMlses people will just pop in when they feel like camping, and there's no penalty for being off pearl XPing, which is dumb. I'm glad we're the way we are.

Ah, the old join the LS as a newbie and after you get all the help, you leave for a bigger one. I know that all too well. So many times the LS would start to build, and then people would leave for a bigger one and it would be just down to two again. Oh well, still the same LS from when all of my friends and I started and had no way to really communicate unless we were in a party. I scraped and saved for 2 weeks to afford one. Everyone actually had decent gear while I was still in starting gear. It was worth it though.
