  • Re: What's your pet peeve in FFXI?

People who think that they own all the mobs near them. I was exping on one of my alt's who is a 17 drg. I'm killing Hill Lizards and I'm jogging towards one when I see a person coming the opposite direction. Now right where I'm killing them is where a cave entrance is that people run through all the time. So this person could just as easily been running past the mob as engaging it, how was I to know? So I hit the mob and the person stops and stares at me. I ignore them and then I get a /t "What?". So now I figure that person was going after the mob so I do a /sea and find that the person is a level 23 thf with no sub job. So again I ignore the person and then I get another /t "....that was MY prey." Oh boy, I just couldn't keep my fingers from typing even though I knew I should...."I don't see your name written anywhere on it." To which I was told "well that blows goats........remind me to hate you." My mob died and I said "boo hoo" and walked away. As I was going in the tunnel I was called a few names and got myself under control and ignored the person. About a minute later, as I was killing a lizard in the tunnel, the person came running past with a sheep on them and died. The thing of it was the persons name is Victory. They obviously should have named their character Failure. LOL They came back and followed me around trying to impress me with how slow they could kill mobs and nearly die. I had them blisted but I'm sure there were comments that I missed about their awesomeness and how much I suck. LOL Ah, the joys of being a newb again.

Getting a /tell to join a party, and have them relay the party location to you. Traveling to the party only to find out that half-way through the zone, they got someone else and filled the party.

The truth is, once he got up there, all he did was get stoned. He ended up failing the majority of his classes, but his mother kept paying for him at the school. One night he called me, and left a very pissy message on my machine that the reason he's failing is that I wasn't up there to help (read: carry) him through his classes. I told him to fuck off, but he ended up calling all of my friends and telling them what a shit-bag I was.

I can't afford to go to college, my dad makes about 100,000 a year, but is horribly in debt; I couldn't get any loans. So I joined the Marine Corps.

I didn't ruin his life, if you look at it that way. I stopped him from failing his classes, and having his mother pay over $80,000 in tuition. The school kicked him out b/c they have a zero-tolerance drug policy. His mother called me and asked if there was anything I could do to help him. Well, I wasn't gonna apologize for not being able to afford college. And I DAMN sure wasn't going to do all his work for him.

He'll have another shot at college, but first, after he changes his attitude. As a friend, when we were alone, we would just chill and play video games. When we were in a large group of people (think a party), he'd turn everything into a pissing contest between him and I....even when it didn't call for a pissing contest.

Anyways, yeah, I did it more so he could get a handle on his life, so he'd be a better person in the end.

Also, paying $80,000 for a Bachelor's Degree in what, pretty much is CADD is retarded.
To be perfectly honest, I agree with what you did. He doesn't sound like a particularly good friend in the first place, I think you're well rid of him. It wasn't "hey, I'm pissed at you this week, etc." Guy kicked you out of the house and robbed you blind. Even if it was just virtual stuff, that's still gotta hurt.

Think of it this way, how much time/effort did you put into getting your gear? I see Emp hairpin and a few other really expensive items there. Enough in gil that I would suspect you've got a few months straight of gameplay in there. Months and months of farming gil so you could buy a few items. I'd look on that the same way I would if someone logged on my char and tossed my Yinyang robe. I spent 3 straight months camping this. I was 0 for 75~79. (Not exaggerating, I made myself stop counting at 0/60). Not counting times I didn't get claim, or didn't see the spawn, either. These were times when I killed him and he either didn't drop or I lost the lot. Three months of my life when I could've done other things at the same time I was waiting on the spawn. Maybe I could've been dating, or going out on the town with friends, still missing a whole season of BSG, probably could've worked more, etc. This was time I sunk instead into this game, to get something I wanted in here. If someone comes along and deletes all your stuff, they're basically telling you that your life is meaningless.

I count about a year's worth of gear camping/farming in just what you listed. You could've gotten ultra-lucky and gotten the drops on the first try, but I suspect you've got the same Random Number Generator experience as the rest of us and it took you a few weeks at least per piece. So, basically, your ex-friend just told you that the entire last year of your life means absolutely nothing and you are a waste of space. For which, you took a year of his life. Sorry, but Lex Talionis, bitch. In this case, the punishment totally and completely fit the crime.

I guess that brings me to my pet peeve with FFXI. For those of you who were here on NA PC release, when did our community really fracture? I believe it was about 3 months after the release. Think about it... give up? That's when the first NA HNMLSs were formed. Before, you might have arguments with new players over Spiny Spipi, Jaggedy-eared Jack, or Leaping Lizzy, but nothing really major. It wasn't until we had to compete with each other for 24hr or 3-day spawns that we really started hating each other. Right around then, you'll see the message boards started getting uglier. We hated each other, we hated JPN players, we hated GMs, etc. Best armor at this point was AF, top gear was Zilart era stuff, and this was pre-sky updates when you might spend days camping one mob for a god pop. As bad as the drop rate is now, it's still actually faster. People were sinking months or years into getting better stuff, and they naturally hated each other for standing in their way. Everyone who camped against you was openly declaring that your life or free time had no value. My pet peeve in FFXI and other MMOs is this kind of forced camping, useless endgame crap. You spend all the levels leading up to endgame feeling like you have to somehow justify the time spent, and then you get to the end levels and all you have to look forward to is E-peen gear. Ridill stops becoming a cool sword and becomes the justification for the last 3 years of your life. This is stupid, and designers need to stop it. We could have tight knit, vibrant gaming communities that support and expand their player base, but the current design really works against this. Instead, we've become really good at carrying grudges.

Nope, it was a tad later than that. You see when we first started forming our endgame ls's we had some very stiff competition, the JP's. They were at the top of their game and were kicking our butts. Most of our anger was aimed solely at them and defeating them. I remember camping KB (back when that was O.O) and there were 3 NA shells there with a notorious JP shell. You'd get a lot of /sh's with cheering if any NA shell got it, which only happened on rare occasions. There was more support for one another and sharing of information back then. But once we started to hone our skills, that started to decline rapidly. As the JP shells became less, we had to turn that anger somewhere and it was at one another.

I will say I am not one of those people that join an ls and immediately hate anyone else not in my ls. Thats just foolishness. If I know an individual of another ls and I'm not particularly a fan of theirs, then I might not get along with that person but I don't turn that against the entire ls. I come from a time when there was a lot of comradery online. We helped one another with information, in games, trading puter parts, etc. I met a bunch of guys online over 25 years ago and we formed a group. I've stayed in touch with all of them through the years. I'm a godmother to 2 of their children, was 'best man' at one wedding, attended a couple of their funerals, had them over for BBQ's, and so on. Now I couldn't imagine finding a group of people like that online and doing those things. It's not just the game thats changed, its the attitude online.

                  Unpreparedness and over confidence.

I'm tired of having someone ask me for help on the fly, assure me (when I ask) they know what they have to do and are completely prepared for it. Then do to some major glitch in their logic something goes horribly wrong. I tend to overprepare... which seems to make in-game life a wee bit easier.

WotG Black Dragon ... we only went in as 3 (Dnc, Sam, Drk) cuz the Drk who organized the run didn't realize the Pld he invited to help out couldn't get into the BCNM cuz he wasn't on the mission yet... uh until we all got to the door and it wouldn't let the Pld in. We almost had the mob dead... We got him down to under 5% and he paralyzed us and then petrified us and then tea-bagged our corpses. We were litterally one WS away from victory on the mob. Afterward we found out I (Dnc) 2hr'd, the Sam 2hr'd, but the Drk not only saved his 2hr, he didn't use Dark Spikes or some other rather intrical part of his f'n job that would have easily been the winning factor(s).

Same day ... different request for help from a different person. 75 Whm wants to kill some NM to get the Carbuncle Mitts out in UgglyPiggy. So we are Dnc, Whm, Pld doing this. I tell them I'm totally unfamiliar with the area but I'm bored and agree to go. We get past the "prelate key" door and arrive at another door with a robot standing in front like a sentry. I don't know if we had to but the Whm attacks this robot. Easy fight ... we go through the door. We get aggro from a Tonberry... Whm casts... Random robot runs thru the doorway we passed thru while me and the Pld are fighting the Tonberry and kills the Whm. Whm did not cast ReRaise like they normally do cuz they were over-confident in the mobs being too weak. So... brainiac that he is.. the Pld casts raise right away. He didn't bother looking around... just did it. We had a Jar-mob hiding round the corner who instantaneously comes over and starts casting on us... the Robot that slaughtered the Whm comes running back like we had started a Mithra wet fur contest and lays more beat down... not to mention the Tonberry that came over only to point and laugh. We wipe ... 2nd time for the Whm ... and he has to farm a new "prelate key".

Do people not realize what game they are playing...?

Yeah, so last night after the Super Bowl, some random RMT started sending tells to everybody, starting with people in Whitegate with a coupon to some website for 5% off bought gil.... GMs got spammed with GM calls from everybody that got them. One of my ls members said he got 6 different ones from different people. Its like the RMT get even more st00pd as time goes by.

Being kicked out of a group because I'm unable to afford the high quality version of every piece of armor up ot my level. I know it's rather sad that a 66 Drg is wearing mostly AF armor (Trust me, I have been farming for a week and a half without leveling trying to replace it), but I'm still doing more damage than the Samurai and Drk/Nin.

Now if anybody should've gotten kicked out of a party, it should've been my friend who was a DRG in 99% AF until he hit 75. Only piece he had that wasn't AF was the Jaridah Peti I think. Shockingly he was never kicked from a party for his gear. I don't think anybody should be kicked for their gear unless they aren't pulling their weight in the party. Anyways, did you parse the fight?

Heh, actually the only piece that isn't AF on me IS a Jaridah Peti, I've never been a rich player... or anywhere near wealthy. (Never had over 200k to my name). I didn't parse the fight, the Samurai told me after I got kicked that I was out-parsing him and the Drk, and was wondering why I was kicked.

For a seperate peeve: Getting invited to a party, going to the camp site, killing mobs for 20 minutes, then getting kicked from the party because they had to "make room" for a LS mate. I should have known since 4/6 of the members were from the same LS.

Ok, well you corrected the timing of my argument, but I stick by my basic assumption. The way the game sets us up promotes us playing for longer and longer periods, (since you won't get all the good gear by quitting as soon as you hit 75). The flip side of that is that we almost have an expectation that we'll make all competition personal. We're sacrificing a lot of our personal lives just to get to the point where we can compete. Camping against others doesn't just deny someone else the chance to get a drop, it denies their worth and the value of their time as well. If you win a drop on the first camp and they win it on the 21st, your time was worth more than theirs was, because it cost a whole lot more of it for them to get the same reward.

You didn't see this in the early MMOs, and I'm thinking Pre-Everquest and UO, we're talking MUDs and text MMOs like Gemstone. Timed camps were late in the game, and they're just profit promoting gimmicks. I think sometimes like this gimmick is used to provide life-support for games that have great initial ideas, but no real staying power beyond that. Unless you're doing the missions, FFXI's later game falls into this category at least sometimes, if not often. (Show me someone who's brain hasn't melted at least once hunting Collibri). There's a great deal of mindless repetition later on. As long as you have these kind of competitive time sinks, it's difficult to establish a cooperative, supportive community of any kind.

It's not the game, its our society. So unless you know some way to massively change the way that our society lives nowadays, I don't see any great change coming in our MMO's either.
