I don't normally nitpick on gear but yesterday in a party I had a NIN tanking with an O.Kote, Empress Hairpin and then some belt that lowers attack.

What level party is this?

This is standard ninja gear. I'm guessing the belt he was using was a swift belt. He's using it mainly for the haste. More haste means less downtime between shadows and easier tanking.

Also, birds are not easy to tank on ninja. They attack fast, and pecking flurry at the wrong time. If he couldn't keep hate on a lower level party, then he needs to reconsider what job he levels. If it's a higher level party though, I would understand him not keeping hate as well, as the higher parties tend more to TP burning and less to tanking.

Birds aren't easy to tank properly on anything, lol. Even as PLD, they swing relatively quickly compared to most mobs(not your standard 240) and although they don't hit like trucks, they can interrupt a lot of casts.

And NIN at that level doesn't have a whole ton of hate tools past voke/Ninjutsu, in the case of casting for hate they many times die too quickly to make anything significant. The actions of other party members must be accounted for too, if there's no TA and every DD is /WAR going nuts on Berserk then it's not exactly a fair fight.

Basically all of the bonuses and penalties on his gear cancelled each other out so that he maybe had +1 attack and -2 Evade overall. Not only couldn't he hit the Collibri but I was outdamaging him AND blood tanking better than him AND I WAS THE EFFING WHITE MAGE. Heck I ended up tanking for half of the time we were there because this NIN couldn't even touch the Collibri.

Some people just don't get it about how stats work. I remember somebody who was planning to TP with a piece of Heca gear, and figured they could just use some haste to cancel out the slow ... there are stats where that sort of thing is a reasonable approach, but haste isn't one of them! You know how it is, every point of haste matters MORE than the one before it...

I refuse to believe anything drops in the Northlands other than experience points due to massive death.

Go fig, another nice little kick in the junk: RDM hat dropped for the group that is monopolizing Xarc and wouldn't negotiate to give us a shot at the zone, lol.

Jack O Lantern's last for three hours, but I never really party for 3 hours straight. Square thinks I need to be playing more ffxi

Good thing about Food Effects that long is that they'll still be there when you log back in. It's not like they'll wear off while you're not even there (logged out).

Stuff like Jack-o-lanterns in particular, you have to notice that while they last that long, they don't stack. Whereas if you have a food that lasts half an hour, like Meat Mithkabobs, they can stack up to 12, for a total of 6 hours of food per inventory space. Oh, and 3-minute snacks, like Ginger Cookies, can stack up to 99, which is technically almost five hours right there. All things considered, I really do prefer half-an-hour long foods, though some melee will swear by that at lower levels, Jack-o-lanterns are nigh-irreplaceable.

Hours and hours of working on the website crap only to have the ls break and reform. Then you get a /t "Hey can you redo the website?" Good thing I've been teaching my godson Photoshop because I can sucker him into doing stuff for me. LOL
