  • Need something to push me forward..

I am what you can say a newbie to FFXI. I've played for about a month, but not so much for the last week. I have hit lv.18 MNK, and training my other classes. WHM and THF to 6, BLM to 2, and WAR to 5 (currently training). I am a male Mithra, which has caused for some awkward moments with horny 12 year olds >.>. Well, I'll get to the point. I've hit a wall in this game. I spent all 50k my uncle gave me to start out, and my character is in need of updated armor/weapons both for my trek to 15 WAR and 30 MNK. I've tried fishing, but it hasn't captivated me enough (then again, my rod keeps breaking). I got lv1, only made like 15k. Some has been drained from buying Yew rods, and I had planned on getting better ones.

My interest is going down the drain. I've been playing Civilization IV in place of FFXI. Truely, I really want to play XI. At least to hit 30 and try out the awesome jobs. I need something to get me going again. Any tips on regaining my interest? Hopefully and easier way to make money other than fishing. Also, I am in Windurst, and have NO plans of leaving for a while.

making money can be a little hard without knowing the market. A few things you can try

    - don't level too many jobs yet. Stick to only 1 or 2. Every jobs need invesment in spell/gear so until you find your way to make money, try cut down the cost.

    - fire crystals. Orcs around sandoria are perfect levelling materials which gives you fire crystals. Collect the crystals, sell them in either bastok or sandoria.

    - some junks you got from monsters may be valuable in the auction house. For example, bat wings, honey, bee hive chips, hare meat, silk thread. Look these up in the auction house. If you get them while levelling, don't throw them away. Find your favourite spot and start killing bees and crawlers for silk and bee hive, they sell very good.

Killing funguars in Ronafure would be easy for you and the sleepshrooms they drop sell well. You could also do crawlers in Sarutabaruta. Silk thread has a low drop rate so it may take several hours to get a full stack to sell, but there are also bees in the area so you can target both Silk and Beehive chips at the same time.

As for fishing, try using a TaruTaru rod instead of the yew, and I don't know what you're using for bait, but Insect balls work well. I think the TaruTaru rod is more expensive but I had good results with it. In freshwater areas in a town you'll catch Crayfish and Moat carp, as you probably already know. The crayfish should cover the cost of broken rods and bait with the Moat Carp being what you're selling for profit. Remember to read the 'feeling' you get. If its bad, just hit ESC and don't risk breaking your rod. Good feeling, pretty sure you can't and one other like that are the ones to try and reel in.

Other then that, fishing is slow, really slow, so it might not be something you stick with. However Moat Carp usually sell very fast and if you fish near an AH, you'll probably find that by the time you've fished up a few stacks, the others you put up have already sold.
I use a Mac because I'm just better than you are.

Ok, by the sounds of it, I should head back out to San d'Oria?

The early levels in FFXI are always a bit stressful. There are a lot of unskilled players, many who are younger and less mature, and that can wear on you after prolonged exposure.

One thing you can do is go farming in Sarutabaruta. Kill bees and crawlers for beehive chips and crawler silk (both of which fetch a sizeable amount at the auction house on most servers), and you'll be able to get a moderate amount of money to find yourself for the short term.

As you rise in level, you'll notice that the less skilled and less mature players tend to fall behind. You don't ever stop running into them, but they certainly become the exception rather than the rule.

QFT. Early levels suck. There's no getting around that. Once you start getting into the higher levels, more stuff will be open to you and you'll be able to enjoy the game more.

Just think of it as getting your tonsils taken out. For the first couple of days, it sucks, but once you get through it you will enjoy life a lot more.
