        Re: So I'm PTing...

Here's a similar story for ya, as I really need to let out some steam: Last night, I was (blind) invited by a 17 war/whm. I was 18 war/mnk, and he had also invited drg, cor, war (no sub), and then a 21 thf/whm (who was still lvling in the dunes becuase he 'needed money'). Before I could even ask about a whm, I was kicked without any warning. After a lot of "did the party disband or was that an accident?", I get a tell by the war/whm saying, "sorry, we had too many warriors." I assume this guy has no idea what a tank does; if he did, he would have kicked himself for holding the pt back. After I informed him that warnings are usually appreciated, he invited me again to be nice. Of course, I denied.

It turned out he had a PL coming to help his group. He's going to grow up to be one crappy warrior.

Well maybe he knew the role, but didn't know the exact terminology. You have to remember that this is the first MMORPG for a lot of players and they're not used to some of the common terms we use everyday.
I'm going with this one. I happened quite a bit to me when I first started playing.

You also have to allow for others to have a different learning curve than you. Not everyone learns everything at the same time, or with the same amount of ease.

I'm trying to imagine a situation in which a Warrior would get to level 26, and know how to tank without ever having heard it called that. What else would all those parties have called it? Mr. Provokey Guy?

This was my first MMORPG, too, and the entire concept of tanking was foreign to me. In nearly every story about first-timers I've ever read, their reaction to being told to provoke was "No way, that makes it hit me!" I just can't picture someone making it 26 levels, and having those discussions, without ever hearing the word "tank."

                Re: So I'm PTing...

FFXI was my first MMO and WAR was my first job, but for some reason, by the time I finally joined a party (at 16, I really drug my feet), I did know what it meant to be a tank. And I kind of fell in love with it a little bit that afternoon too. It's why I ended up leveling PLD.

But anyway, yeah. I sincerely doubt a WAR could get that far along without having ever heard the term, or been asked to play that role in a party.

                    Re: So I'm PTing...

I had a NIN70+ in a Lv.40 cap event who didn't know what "spinning the wheel" meant. The reason? English isn't his first language, and he doesn't browser forums like this much, so up to that point in time he had never heard of the term (or paid attention to it) before.

                    He turned out to be a great tank, hold mobs' attention solid, didn't get hit besides the -ga spells, and brought a ton of X-potions to keep himself alive. And, he spun the wheel--he just didn't know that's what the NA players called it. >_>;

At the same event, also had a RDM player who tookever a NIN/RDM character (owner out w/broken arm) for nuking purpose, and had to teach him how to do the wheel thing (line up macros in the right order for easy pressing, recast time, etc), and what kind of equipement to use. He did just fine; our top DD for the night by far.

If a player doesn't know a term or concept, try teaching him. ^_^ It's good for him, good for you--heck, good for everyone on your server.

I believe it refers to cycling through the elemental ninjitsu. You can do this while facing towards or away from the mob. Many NM and BCNM strategies actually require that you face away from the mob and just cycle through your elemental spells. It seems to work rather well.

This is the first I've heard of "spinning the wheel", too. Just goes to show there's always something new to learn.

Maybe the WAR didn't know what "tanking" meant because he only heard the term {Meat}{Shield}? If you think about it, "tanking" could also be used for a high-damage dealer.

The first time I got to even try magic-bursting as BLM was in the mid-20s when I became part of a static party. I rarely saw skillchains (and I'm 42 WHM) in pick-up parties and none of them organized the resulting element with the BLM. I guess BLMs are just born knowing the look of every skillchain and how to time a magic burst? o.O

heh, last night I was in the dunes levelling my WHM with two WARs that had no subjobs and who absolutely knew nothing about [Provoke] or <call11> [No more mp!] mp 5/212 Granted they weren't mid 20's, but I just started playing in March and I had figured out what a tank was in the first few weeks as a MNK. Its not that tough to figure out.

Half the time when I come across someone who doesn't know the terminology or just plain doesn't know things they should, it's because they don't know how to scroll up. I take it for granted that every time something flies by and I'm, like, "Who with the what now?" that I just *plus sign-enter-left arrow-left arrow-left arrow* until I see it, but you wouldn't BELIEVE how many people I meet who have no idea this feature even exists.
