Re: FFXI on the Xbox 360

I play on both, I have a 16:10 lcd on dvi and a and 16:9 hdtv. I prefer the 360 on my hdtv over my pc with registry hacks at 1680x1050 because 1) stretching 2) sitting on my couch is always a good break because I am a pc gamer and 3) xbox live

I'm not making fun of someone's financial ability. I'm making fun of the fact that if you can afford an HD Display device, yet can't afford a video card or appropriate devices to OUTPUT to said display, then you have really failed at prioritizing what upgrades are best suited to you. It's like buying a $6,000 car stereo system and hooking up a casette player.

I know because I have many older LCD monitors. Since they can not achieve 1920x1200 it isn't an accurate comparison to my HDTV and that is my point. Most people do not have this capability so it may be a better choice for them to play the 360 version.
If you're not comparing them on the same display device, then you're not making a determination that the PC version looks better, or the Xbox version looks better, all you're determining is that your HDTV looks better then your LCD monitor. The reason why I think my test is sound is it compared both devices on the SAME display, so one can rule out the display as a factor. The only difference on the display was two small bars on the sides for the xbox 360 version, because due to construction issues most LCD monitors for computer tend to be 16:10 rather then the 16:9 common to televisions, thus when working in native 1080i there are small sidebars to preserve the correct aspect ratio.

I don't understand what you're trying to suggest, that the "average" PC is incapable of running this. I mean, if it comes down to that, an xbox for FFXI is what, 399 dollars? The primary people reading a thread like this are generally going to be enthusiasts who are trying to make the determination if buying an xbox 360 is worth it for an improvement in graphics. People who consider buying $400 dollar video game consoles and $3-5000 televisions are generally not the type of people who lack the hardware. I can't afford a full-blown 60" HDTV crazyness, so that is why I opted to go the far, far cheaper route and get a monitor that could also do HDTV for when I decide to get off my lazy butt and get a HD digital converter from the cable company. Heck, if it wasn't for the IRS fairy, I wouldn't even have this, so I am far, far from an affluent, wealthy individual.

So here, I'll conceed this to you if it will make you feel better: For the average person with an normal television, the xbox 360 version might give better performance for you. If you are a PC enthusiast who is considering picking up an xbox 360 to obtain better graphics and performance, then most likely would be wasting $400 unless you want it for other games as well.

Re: FFXI on the Xbox 360

        look its simple :p

        360 > PC (normal settings) > PS2

        PC (registry edit) > 360 > PS2

two ways to look at ti, and both are fine....why does it really matter anyway -.-

I don't actually edit my registry for what I consider good graphics on the PC. I enlarge the resolution to fit my monitor, and so that I have enough room to chat and see where I'm going at the same time. I also enhance the digital vibrance through my graphics card, which is a simple solution to brighten up FFXI's otherwise earthen color scheme. All I'm really looking for on the 360 is a better resolution, but I'm learned to live without it.

I had to make no changes to anything in order to change my interface resolution to 1920x1200, in the config program it should list all of the resolution options that your display adapter and video card "handshake" (for lack of a better term) on. It's your background resolution that needs to be changed through the registry.

If your monitor only supports a native resolution LOWER than 1920x1200, does setting at that resolution really matter? Because a monitor with 1920x1200 native resolution is like 21 inch lcd. Not very many people have those, and if you're gonna buy one, might as well shell out a bit more for a television.

Also impaction, S-video is not very much better than composite (what you're using now). You will not notice too much of a change between composite and s video. If you had the two side by side, you'll notice the difference, otherwise, the difference is minimal. I highly recommend getting a vga cable if you have a spare computer monitor or if your computer monitor allows for video switching.

A review I did on the Xbox version of FFXI.

A few things Id like to add on.
The draw distance seems to be greater than on the PC, but not by very much.
The graphics are enhanced compaired with the PC version. Somethings on my PC version are pixelated but are smooth on the Xbox.

Yea draw distances are slightly higher. Graphics are smoother due to AA.

You always, always, always, always, ALWAYS want to have an LCD operating at the native resolution.

                    Wikipedia Entry - "Native Resolution"

If your LCD's native resolution is 1024x768, you should run everything at that res, period.

I said should, not must. Running at non-native will result in distortion that probably doesn't help with your situation... >.>

                        Wikipedia:

This is especially problematic as most resolutions are in a 4:3 aspect ratio (640×480, 800×600, 1024×768, 1600×1200) but there are odd resolutions that are not, notably 1280×1024. If a user were to map 1024×768 to a 1280×1024 screen there would be distortion as well as some image errors, as there is not a one-to-one mapping with regards to pixels. This results in noticeable quality loss and the image is much less sharp.
Less sharp = more blurry = more difficult, in general, to read.

                              Hey....

I just tried those drivers, and it's not detecting the controller. It seems as if Microsoft is still installing their drivers, and I thought this was supposed to be it's own set or whatever.

I just got an Xbox 360 controller, and I have the LT/RT problems too. I get that program to run, but then it doesn't do anything as far as... anything.

Stupid Microsoft should just fix their damn auto-drivers.

                              PS: PS2 > PC > 360 ---- 800x600 > 9999x9999 ---- chocolate > vanilla, now let's fight!

                              Double Post Edited:
                              Oh I got it!

Now if only the guide button did something... and if only the top-left LED wasn't the only one on... It looks broked o.O

lol yeah that LED shows that you are "player 1" I am not sure...but if you pluged in another one to your PC on the second controler, the second LED should light up.... not sure if it will do that on PC though..it does on 360.

and yeah sorry those drivers can be tricky, just make sure you completly remove the offical driver, then install the new one
