Alrighty, I finally got the game BUT i haven't been able to really start playing yet ( I have made my character tho) because of two problems.

When In-Game and I start walking around I get these blurry little white squares and stuff popping up, I don't have a screenshot or anything cause they pop up and then go away. Although its not horrible to the point where I can't even play anymore, its just extrodinarily annoying.

Another thing is the movement scheme, is there anyway to change it? Im used to the movement scheme that most MMOs use now adays, the wasd set up kinda thing.

    ~Thank You

    Re: Questions

If you want WASD movement, you'll have to go into Config on the ingame menu and change keyboard type to Compact.

Personally though, the FFXI control scheme for keyboards, while unconventional, is actually really awesome once you get used to it a bit. You never need to really use your mouse, and everything is right at your fingertips.

As for your graphical issues, I don't have any sugestions. I'm sure the next poster will though.

      Ah alright cool thank you.

Another thing, is it possible to show/hide helm?

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention my computer's specs.

      128 MB Nvidia GeForce 6200

        Re: Questions

No, it's not possible to hide armor.

What version of the nVidia drivers are you running? Have you tried other versions? There's a list of supported drivers here. Have you set the resolutions using the FFXI Config tool (It's a separate program, run before you start FFXI)?

There is no rush. If you're not willing to take your time, don't be surprised when no one wants to give you much of theirs.

          Re: Questions

Your PC should be able to handle the game just fine. So it might be a driver issue more than anything else.

Unfortunately, no, there isn't a hide/show helm feature, but I sure wish there was sometimes.

Yup, my config option settings are...
            overlay graphics resolution: 1024 x 768
            backgroun resolution : 1024 x 1024
            texture compression: uncompressed
            on-screen maps: uncompressed
            MIP mapping disabled
            gamma base: 0.0
            Enabled bump mapping
            environmental animation: normal

And as for my drivers, I'm not really sure as to what version they are. I installed the drivers from the CD I got with the video card.

However, this has never happened in any other game I have played. WoW, Everquest 2, etc.

              Re: Questions

FFXI is just really weird with certain Nvidia drivers. It's unlikely that it's anything you're doing wrong specifically.

Heheh, well I'm not really sure as to what drivers Im using. But I think this might be it.

                Main Driver: nv4_disp.dll
                Version: 6.14.0010.7644 (English)

Those other games are not Windows ports of a PS2 game. Like Aelathir said, FFXI is picky and weird. The graphics system hasn't been touched much since it was released. Those 81.98 drivers they list as supported? That just happened a few months ago. Before that, the most recent supported drivers were something ridiculously out of date like 5xxx or something. (Newer drivers usually worked, they just weren't supported.)

                    Re: Questions

Hmmm, alright I see, but where can I find a download for that specific driver? I checked the nvidia website it says the version is like 84.21 or something of that sort.

EDIT: Bah, nvm I found it. However the 81.98 is for Windows 95/98 while the 84.21 is for Windows XP. Are they basically the same thing?

                      Re: Questions

Driver archive for WinXP/2k. If you go through the driver download thing at nVidia's site where you select platform and such, there's a link to that under the "Additional Info" block on the left (in case you need to find it again in the future).

Edit: I'd be surprised if 84.21 didn't work. 81.98, and previous versions, were working for a lot of people before PlayOnline listed them as supported.

Got damnit! Now I have an even BIGGER problem. Now my mouse cursor stops moving! It works for like a minute then it completely stops moving. Although I can still click stuff but the mouse cursor on my screen dosent move at all! ( I'm not talking about the game)

                          Re: Questions

Is it an optical mouse? Might have something messing with the laser. If it's a wireless mouse, might need new batteries.

I had a lot of problems keeping my old optical mouse clean. But my new one is great.

No, no. The mouse cursor on my screen stops moving. However my mouse still works but I can't see where the cursor is anymore. It seems to have been something with the graphics driver, I reinstalled my old drivers and now my cursor is working again.

Oh, ok. Well, that makes more sense. Sucks about the drivers though. :/
