It is because of hyper inflation that SE doesn't give them more money. When an npc gives you money, thats making money appear out of no where, therefore adding to the total amount of gil the whole server has. It was worst when you could fish up rusty caps 24/7. Those were synthed and sold to npcs, introducing billions of gil into the economy. SE introduced things like dynamis, taxes, and auction fees to battle this inflation. Activities like those take money out of the economy, resulting in less inflated prices.

Maybe a proposal is that with a new account and subsequent first content ID, a player will have a key item ticket which grants them 10 free auction listings. This will be limited to first time players only to keep this from being abused.
This is actually one of the most intelligent ideas I have ever seen posted to fix a problem in this game.

i had a guy /t me last night with "can i have 10k plzzzzzzzzzzzz" ( not kidding, exact quote) then w/o me saying anything, he traded me. seriously, some people are just rude. i cancelled the trade and he did it again.

some people need to just man up and do the work.
i, like many of you, came into this game w/ little or no friends. my friends were starting new like me and we had no idea what to do. in due time, we figured out little things to get us by and before you know it, you're making gil.

so many people are just looking for the easy way out. instant gratification on everything they do. man up already geez.

Meh, just give it to 'em one gil at a time. Heck, mail 'em one gil at a time.

Why not have 20 or 30 buddies mail them one gil at a time? Now that's generous!

Re: Why I never give new people gil.

I have met those noobs before, the ones that ask for gil. This is my experience with the matter.

First off the noob player is very often a person whom farms for gill by making mules and running about asking for gil to transfer to the actually used character that they play. They do this because some generous players tend to kick down 100ks of gil to newbs thinking it a wise thing.

What I do is I lead them to the cloth store and fully equip them with lvl 1 gear and buy them some lv 4-8 gear also. This is my way of helping noobs that ask for help, instead of patronizing them, being rude, or giving gil to them which is not necesary. 2/3 times I do this they log of immedietly probably because they are a bum that was really looking for gil and not real help, having a heart and not wanting to waste a good persons time they log immedieatly. This is how I know that 2/3 of these peoples are ussually bums, they log when actually getting helped. Though this one time I helped a newb taru out and he was quite genuine and became my best friend in the game, even though I am andgame and he was very new. He, and his wife, are very fun people to talk to and I really like to help them out when they need it, though they never really need it becasue they are competant players as they have found out how to manage on thier own because they are not bums.

Helping newbs can lead to good things, you could meet some cool people. Just test their resolve and don't be pridefull, its just a game.

Re: Why I never give new people gil.

I gave out gil back in the day to new players on occasion but now I don't do that anymore. One time I gave a guy 10k and after that I was getting /t's out the butt from people asking me for gil. Word got around.

Now I'll help people and educate them. Teach them to learn the ah, give them farming tips, show them npc's they can make money off of (bat wings, rabbit hides, etc.) but no more gil giving!

Recently I was lvling a job in Altepa and all we needed for the pt was a tank. Well I found a JP nin and he needed to get to Altepa. Well we had a bit of trouble communicating and he was trying to tell me he didn't have the crystal but I didn't understand. I got on my whm and went to Jeuno and tried to tele him. LOL So I trekked back to Jeuno and told him that I would get him there. So I Tele-dem'd him, escaped him from Oldtown, took him to Bastok, lead him through Korroloka, got him the crystal, and took him to Rabao to get the map and show him around. All the while I was doing this my pt /t'd me and told me that there were 2 tanks in the zone already so I didn't need to do this with him. Now while I would have loved to get exp instead of doing all of this, how could I pass up this opportunity to teach someone something that was so simple to me? So my pt stuck with me, bless their hearts!, and we got him all set up. I changed in Rabao and whizzed out to the pt with the nin. Three fights later my replacement came and I had to leave to do ls events. /sigh These are the things that benefit new/low lvl players more than giving them gil...giving them our time and knowledge.

Re: Why I never give new people gil.

I also no longer give gil to new players to help them out. I had someone ask me once to let him borrow 100 gil, yes a measly 100 gil, to buy the weapon he wanted. Okay, I think, 100 gil is nothing.. chocobo's cost more than that. After that, I spent some time telling him about the armor and weapon shops in San, told him some of the things he can farm to make some semi-quick gil, explained about some quests that he could do. All in all it was a good conversation.. I thought.

A few days later he was asking again, this time for 10k to buy an item. I explained that he could get that 10k in a very short time if he followed the advice I had given him previously. Then started the "You're a high level, you're supposed to help me when I want or need help!!!!" I swallowed my high level, stuck up <sarcasm> irritation, and informed him that I was not his bank, nor is anyone else on the game. If he really wants that item, or any other item, he'll go learn how to earn his gil like everyone else in the game. I also told him that my game time is just that, mine, and I'm not supposed to do anything for anyone, wished him luck, and I then put him on my /blist.

I no longer enjoy visiting my home nation of San d'Oria. I get checked and spammed with "give me gilz" /tells.

I'm not against helping people, but when did it become the norm to say "you're a high level, you're expected and supposed to give me gil/items/help when I need it"?

Of all the negative things we sometimes say or hear about new players to FFXI, there are some that are positive that make it all worth it, to me. I recently met a young level 10 taru WHM, who died trying to help a friend of mine, by curing him while he was soloing bunnies by the zone of Valkurm - La Theine Plateau. I raised her, and spent some time talking to her. She had started the game 4 days earlier and she was full of questions about the game, how party mechanics work, whats expected of certain jobs. I spent hours with her in the coming days, answering questions in /tells, cheering her on as she leveled up, offering to help her with subjob items if she needed it (she didn't, she managed to get them all while partying in the dunes). She's never once asked me for gil, or a power level, or items. She asks me how to get things on her own.

I've even offered my help for Kaz keys, and she's turned me down.. hehe I love that taru!!! Players like her make it worthwhile to me to continue offering advice, some do learn from our experience.

I'm sure I'm not the first one to have experienced this, but I've been /checked, then been asked for money on the grounds that my gear was really pretty and therefore must be really expensive.

                  It was Elvaan RSE.

There's a certain logic, and a certain LACK of logic that irritates me about these people who /check & /beg. If it ever happens to me while I'm wearing something I genuinely dropped a truckload of gil on, I've already got the conversation plotted in my head:

                  <Noob> /check
<Noob> whoa dude, kewl equip, can I hav sum gil plz?
<Lasswyn> I think it would be better if I showed you how to make your own money.

                  <Noob> plz gimmie money
                  <Lasswyn> No, I don't think it's right. >.>
<Noob> but ur rich, u gots like a milion gil
                  <Lasswyn> ........
<Lasswyn> No, I USED to have a million gil. Now I'm wearing it.
                  <Noob> u suck monkey ballz
<Lasswyn> At least I look good doing it.

Yea, I hate it when they go straight to the liquor store.

Anyway: I try not to wear my (admittedly loaned) Scorp Harness out in public, because people beg me for money. I couldn't even afford the harness! Its like painting a bullseye.

I've never given anyone any money, but I give away items that I've crafted tons of or whatnot. Only one person asked me for money ever, and I told them pretty much I was wearing it... I just had bought my Spartan Cesti at the time.

Teaching someone to fish moat carps > giving them gil. Any day. I wish someone had shown me that when I started.

A Lot of Gil, In the Wrong Hands

I have never begged anyone for gil.

However one time someone gave me 300k worth of gil for some reason, but I foolessly wasted it.

I guess people who earn their money are more careful on how they spend it.

In RL, I'm pretty easy with money.

In game, I'm so tight fisted that it makes no sense. If I had 10mil gil, I wouldn't buy a dang thing either. It takes a lot of gil over what I want to buy for me to be able to part with it, usually having x2 the ammount of gil I need to buy it. I'm such a tightwad.

I can always tell when somebody is going to beg for money in Jeuno. For some reason they appear on my screen, run up to my side, and target me for a few seconds before sending the tell. Everytime I see somebody's head turn to me while I'm standing at the AH I think "Please for the love of God," but I'm interuppted by "u giev?".

I'm not opposed to answering questions, I do get a lot of tells for some reason and I try to answer them all. I always liked the people who asked more questions day after day.

I'm never asked for money, i guess everyone on the server knows i'm to poor and lazy to make any. But when i do help a new player out it is just with a weapon. My main reason for this is the game gives warriors a sword but they are better with axe and great axe. I don't want them to start off on the wrong foot and have some dick cuss them out in the dunes for not having a axe. Normally the same dick that won't help them understand each classes skill in weapons and just expects to much.

I'm the total opposite of you Angryundead about personal money upkeep. My friends call me a "jew" with my money when i'm hanging with them but in game I can't keep anything over 200,000gil without buying something I won't use. So many mules with so much I'll never use. I've never been good with money.

But I'm learning RL and Game wise.

I Mine and Farm a lot of my items now, and I can sell what I don't need on the AH. It takes a while, but I'm slow learning.

Maybe one day i will actually earn 100k or maybe even 1m, but that will probley be a long way off and a lot of work.
