  • Killer Traits

I was browsing around and came across this pseudo damage calculator posted here: http://www.moonlight.gr.jp/~el/ffxi/backstub.html.en

Although I'm willing to bet that the formula isn't accurate and whatever his calculations are might be off, what interests me is that there's a check box that asks if you have a Killer Trait, and checking it results in a 25% damage increase.

I know at some point in my FFXI career I'd dismissed the idea that Killer Traits boosted damage and only gave the intimidation effect, but finding this thing got me second-guessing. After all, +25% dmg could be somewhat unnoticeble, given the fact that we rarely exp on stuff that's subject to a Killer Trait (except for beastmasters) and our normal damage fluctuates significantly to begin with. Has anyone done any kind of testing with this?

As a drk, I'm always noticed doing more damage against weapons.

At first killer traits used to raise dmg but i think SE "fixed it" so it would only intimidate mobs.

I noticed this kicking in for DRKs when chaining weapons in sky. A DRK in my LS was complaining about the damage his WS was doing against mobs, but he PWNed weapons. This is far from conclusive evidence but it seems to back up the theory.

What type of weapons are the weapon mobs weak too? Slashing, piercing, blunt etc...

            Re: Killer Traits

If a killer results in a +25% boost to attack it would seem you could test that pretty easy. A spear/bow/x-bow/gun vs. an Undead with Undead Killer, if it does give a damage boost those weapons should come closer to achieving the regular damage they do against other mobs of similar strength.

Couple that with Berserk +25% and the -50% from those weapons would be countered. So if the Killer effect does have that type of gain that's how you'll really notice it. For example on most stuff I exp on my range is like 100-200 a normal shot on skeletons it's 50-100 if Undead Killer does boost the damage then with Berserk I should start reaching around 75-150.

I think that test would assume that these properties stack how we think they stack. I guess the proper way would be to find some item that gives a killer effect and do some testing with that. The Circles might work, but I think 1 min might be too short to do some real testing. Or if you had two DD buddies, say a drg and a drk that hit for about the same on most things, go kill some weapons together.

Thanks for the input, this could be very interesting...

Well if you do try and test it I would suggest using a range weapon more, mostly because even though distance changes how much damage they do their damage variance is still very small when you keep a consistant distance. So if a killer effect if it gives more damage would be a lot more noticable on ranged attacks then melee.

Then again probably want to test melee to ranged too see if killer might have a variation there.

                  Re: Killer Traits

Go to a promy, farm empties.

Start with a normal piece of armor, Cent set, Eisen stuff, Seer's Merc Cpt, whatever.

Then switch to the Shade gear.

Your dmg won't go up. I know it won't. I've done countless promies and I've farmed in that place hundreds of times. Solo farming, NPC quests, showing newbies around, whatever, I spent WAY too much time in those zones. The Empty Killer effect from just one puece of armor procs at a pretty decent rate, and I hear that the more gear you have the more it procs. I could never test this myself as I never had the cash for it, but that's besides the point.

Another way to test it, use a Blu. Fight a sheep or a rabbit or any other Beast type mob. Half way through the fight. Start without Beast killer and half way through the fight re-equip your spells to add beast killer. Watch the Dmg, it won't change. Use parsers, there will not be a 25% dmg increase equiping the killer effect.

                    Re: Killer Traits

It's real simple. If Killer effects added damage, then BSTs would out DD everyone. Well, that's enough proof right there.
