  • Where is the achievement in this game?

I'm beginning to lose intrest in this game, for any other game I'd just move onto the next one but I've made friends in this game and I'm looking for something else to stay for. I find farming and in some cases exp parties boring. The things which others seems to say give you a sence of achievement, subjob, chocobo licence, kazham keys and advanced jobs did not really give me a scence of achievement. I think mainly because a bunch of high level players did everything for me, I just tagged along. The exception is my chocobo licence which I did myself but chocobos were a bit of a let down, sure they're faster but now I have to go to places further away. The 2-3 dragon fight was a disapointment as well, it was just too easy.

From looking around, the things I have to look forward to are my mini smn avatar fights, CoP missons and the lvl cap boss (Maat?). Although all I need to do for them it seems is follow a step by step guide and be lucky. The funnest thing I've done so far was the Gustaberg tourist quest, fighting lizards at lvl10 in the dunes and Tigers at lvl24. In those if we messed up we would all die but I've done nothing like that since. Most other exp mobs seems to be either really weak e.g. worms, crabs and mandies or have annoying moves that can kill you if you just happen to be unlucky e.g. Pugils (Screwdriver) Damselflys and Giants AoE moves.

I'm probably being overly negative but then I usally am. I want to stay because of the friends I've made but I don't want that to be the only reason. So there most be something I can find exciting in this game. Please don't give me "This game is not right for you, go play game xxxx" answers, I want it to be right for me but I've just not got there yet.

    Find achievment whereever you look.

Getting your af is hard and tiresome, but rewarding. Doing your nations missions for great story. Try Crafting, i find that fun to do to break up the day and ssave me farming as much.

Just do random things with yoru friends, break up the exping alot, try some of the thousands of quests that are in game too.

Dont worry about exp mobs they get better as you get higher :D

Re: Where is the achievement in this game?

This entire game is achievement. You're always excited to hit a new level, and then you get new equipment and new items.

Even when you're farming, you're always hoping for that jackpot kill that brings you money.

Camping NMs can be frustrating as hell, but I doubt anyone would deny that thrill you get when the NMs name turns red and it's battle on.

The problem seems to be that you let other people have all the fun. You let high levels do all the work, so they got all the achievement. Go out and try something yourself.

Personally, I did RSE on my own. I invis'ed, sneaked, and ran through Gusgen like a madman.

Is the chest here or over there? Oh damn, my sneak is wearing. The entire thing was all fun and exciting, and the moment I popped that chest was like winning the lottery.

Fun is what you make it. Go out and explore.

Re: Where is the achievement in this game?

There are things to achieve everywhere. It's not exactly like a vending machine, where you put in effort and get an automatic reward, but it is kind of like that in that you put in effort and eventually see a reward, even if that reward is just learning what does and doesn't work in a particular situation (I'm not good with metaphors).

Personally, since my return to the game, everything is a mini-achievement. Getting level 20 in all jobs (that I have at the moment), doing my rank missions solo, questing, crafting, etc. are all things that make me feel proud of what I've managed to accomplish.

        edit:

To echo what Taodyn said, doing your own RSE (I did it as a 40 WHM once, which? Not so much fun, but still - I did it!), searching for your own AF coffers, camping and (hopefully) claiming various NMs, etc. All good stuff.

It took me a while to figure out the "point" of the game, too. I went into the game thinking "What the hell? There's no end-game battle, no big boss that you fight to get feeling of accomplishment that comes with 'The End'?" I even got Lambchop's damned song stuck in my head. "This is the game that never ends...."

It's all in who you meet and the experiences you share. I'm in an end-game LS, have a couple different statics, and am THIS CLOSE to getting my first character to 75. Like others have said, the sense of accomplishment can come from several different areas. Set a goal, work for it, and when you achieve it you'll feel the accomplishment. But above all - have fun!

Re: Where is the achievement in this game?

Someone asked me that question irl and I said that I play FFXI because it is time consuming and frustrating.

They kept waiting for another answer but that was it: time consuming and frustrating.

I'm not sure what sort of "sense of accomplishment" you are looking for from your hobby, but personally I have enjoyed everything I have done solo and very little I have done in a group; that's why my main is BST.

On the other hand, from a social standpoint, I have found being helpful to people, being a shoulder to cry on, and just being there for somebody personally rewarding, even if it is through a video game.

I do note that the awesome gear I can hardly wait to save up for and hardly wait to use turns into some piece of junk that clutters up a mule's moghouse, so I wouldn't look there for a sense of accomplishment.

If you just want to brag about something in FFXI, strut around with the "Virtous Saint" title, or whatever that AV title is. That's about the toughest title to get imho.

It's a game. Are you having fun with it? If not, then why are you still playing?

The thing I live for is those missions...every mission is differnet and some can even kill you! The dragon is just a taste of what to come....and knocking the Shadowlord around was really satisfing to me ^^

That's why I like trying things (like the 2-3 dragon) with unusual combos. Or solo. It's fun to try out challenges you know how to easily tear through in a different way and see if you can still come out on top. But maybe that's just me.

Re: Where is the achievement in this game?

By sense of accomplishment I mean a reason to justify the amount of time I spend playing it and some kind of goal/objective to aim for. As for letting the high level players do all the work for me. I did'nt just hang around waiting for them to get the skull, kazham keys etc. I helped but they had stoneskin so no need for cure, they had better protect/shell than me and my 300% tp moves did as much damage as a normal hit for them, so my contribution was insignificant. For finding this game fun, yes I do find it fun but not all the time. Traveling, waiting for a party, farming and camping mobs I find rather dull. On the otherhand I find close fights exciting and I find talking with my ls and chatty exp parties enjoyable.

I've not heard about RSE before but I guess I'll look at that then.

I live for making new friends and seeing new places personally...

I love doing things I've never done with people I've just met and discovering new things and places to go.

Really, you've only begun to scratch the surface of what this game has to offer. There is a world of activities out there the further into the higher levels you get.

You might like CoP missions. And level up to the point where there are no 'high levels' to help you.

Another thought if you like close battles without help would be to go the BST route, It's a fun job with lots to learn, and they occasionally get together for bcnm's and such. Also DRG solo is a blast and even better with a duo or trio. The things I love most are doing missions, preferably solo, I mean I'll take help but beating that dragon for the signal pearl buddy as a drg 36 was a blast, died 3 times but solod it in the end.

I think CoP is for you then. It is an entire expansion of close fights with alot of story line. You will constantly be exposed to new things, and you will lose alot of battles before you finally succeed. And you can't be zerged through most of it. You will need a party for this, and some patience to complete it.

I would start with the crag missions and see how you like them. You will need 6 people, and it is a lvl 30 cap. While a little research is good, do not feel that recommended party setups are the only way. All CoP missions can be beat with a balanced party.
