  • Things you learned the hard way.

The title is pretty self-explanatory, here's a good thread for you to post about things that you learned the hard way (i.e. getting kicked from your party, or ending up face down). I'll start:

My first party in King Ranperre's Tomb, I'd been there before but not in the hard section. Well, we get a link and it starts attacking me, so I figure I'll just run up the stairs to the easy area and zone it. Well wouldn't you know that it doesn't work that way? The ??? that separates the easy and the {Incredibly tough} areas are not actually counted as a zone. -.-

Got killed, PT wipe. Man, that made me feel like a retard.

Here's another: Arcana aggro to magic. And bombs to sight.

    Post your lessons learned.

Re: Things you learned the hard way.

When I switched from Whitemage to redmage, I soooo wanted to be up front and swing my sword. I played as redmage/warrior up until level 24

At that time we had no zilart yet. The only popular level ground for level 24-28 was batallia tigers. As you know, tigers have nasty group paralyze. There were a few things that slowly forced me to move from frontline to backline support role....
    - my attack was missing... like crazy
    - to avoid paralyze
    - healers were going low on MP really fast. And I realized my MP was so important for secondary healing.
    - then I realized how imprant prana was. /Whm was so perfect for Tiger PT.

So, no more than level 30 I was already a full time support mage. My original attitude and vision that Rdm = front line fighter was gone. Forever.

For Sam, atk and str are more important than dex and acc at end game. I was always of the mind that it's better to get hits in than how much you hit. Part of me still believe that, but I try to balance str/atk with acc. It sucks that sam can miss with a weaponskill with 30+ acc plus accuracy food.

The flip side: Levelling the new jobs, particularly Cor and Pup, need Dex and Acc. I tried going str/atk on Pup, but was missing like a Drk (no offense).

Depending on the job, between levels 10-20 EP becomes SE's code word for "Instant Death."

The ground shaking is rarely a good thing.

When running through Kuftal tunnel, if a party member doubles back, it's not because their sneak wore and they need a good place to cast it.

Garlaige Citadel is not in good shape.

          LOL, yeah, so true.

          My husband and I:

          Aksannyi: Look, a ram!
          Tauro: Let's kill him!
          SPLAT.
Bloodtear Baldurf hits Aksannyi for 453 points of damage.
Aksannyi was defeated by Bloodtear Baldurf.
          Tauro: Oh damn.
Bloodtear Baldurf hits Tauro for 395 points of damage.
Tauro was defeated by Bloodtear Baldurf.
Tauro: What the hell is Bloodtear Baldurf?
Aksannyi: I don't know, but he sure owned us!

(Those probably aren't the exact numbers ... but you get the idea. Horrible death.)

You still get aggro from too weak mobs if you rest by them, also they can aggro to you through a fence like the ones on pal mines, then run through the maze all the way to you and of course bring all their murderous turtle buddies.

Lol. I still fail at this one occasionally. When I'm pulling, I just get into a rhythm, and I'll pull an NM thinking it's a regular mob. Happens to me a lot in Kuftal with Arachne and Pelican mostly.

Next lesson: Make sure you sort your inventory when an important item you want is in the Treasure pool. Be sure not to lot miscellaneous items if you are low on space less your drop will be lost.

Also, DO NOT escape or warp before the item goes into your inventory. I've heard many a story of people losing G1 items or testimonials this way.

Re: Things you learned the hard way.

The first time I ever went to Jeuno a friend of mine was leading me (he was 20, and I was 19, but he had been there before, so...) and we saw a walking tree. He decided to be brave and run up to see if they aggro. You can imagine how that turned out.

For a long time I was very resistant to learning how to do things correctly. I was that sword weilding WAR/RDM in Qufim was insisted on being main tank (I mean, I did ok, but I could have been doing so much better). The game had just come out in NA, so all of us were kind of noobish, but around level 24-25ish I just kind of hit a wall with my progress, and so I went online to find out what I was doing wrong.

Boy was I embarassed. Anyway, I spent a lot of time making up lost ground (leveling axes and my ranged skills, leveling MNK to sub, etc.), and eventually became a bit less noobish. But it was definitely the hardest lesson for me to learn, even if I didn't necessarily learn it the hard way.

and btw getting the map doesnt help at all... ur better off memorizing where u are when ur there...

oh and when traveling to norg... try being a thf... so that if ur sneak weres off u can perfect dodge ur way to the zone...

Re: Things you learned the hard way.

One thing I learned about the maps for those two jungles that helped me out IMMENSELY is that the underground tunnels are not shown on the map, all you'll see is trees. So although they twist and turn in some weird direction, if you look at where you are right before you enter one, and what direction you're headed, you can guess a few places you might end up, and that helps to make a little bit more sense of it. That's something I discovered while making my way to Norg without an escort for the first time.

Tractoring counts as zoning. I was helping a guy get a coffer key but he died so I was tractoring him to safety to raise when the key dropped. Everybody passed and congratulated him. He accepted tractor and the key went away. ><

Agreed. G1 in Eldieme: I died, found paper, got tractored, paper didn't go to anybody because of passes and zones.
