Oh man, that totally sucks. Well, thanks (at least) for telling us so it doesn't happen to others, because I'm sure that would have screwed me over sometime if I didn't know.

Things I learned the hard way:

In Qufim, there's an aggro kraken down in that pretty little cave.

        Who knew?

I learned this one the hard way just today:

The Malboro in Wajaom Woodlands and Bhaflau Thickets have incredibly low attack delay and have endrain. Oh and they hit HARD too. 90-120 without pro IV. yay for having to HP at lvl 75.

In all seriousness, way way way back a few months before NA release with my little JPN version of the game, learning the difference between sight and sound aggro took a bit. I just couldnt figure out why I could run behind Goblins in Gustaburg but not Quadav.

Re: Things you learned the hard way.

I heard those malboro have endrain too...so I decided to solo one and never saw it go off. So I soloed another one with the same results. >_>a I saw crazy near-novv-regen going on, but no drain. Although it was probably because I was using fenrir only. All my other staves (minus light) were in my mog safe for extra inventory room. They still took me 3 or 4 blood pacts to kill, and were only EP (I usually only use one level 65-70 blood pact on EPs that I solo, two if they have super high HP or DEF like MNKs and PLDs)...they do drop vines often though. At least the two I killed did.

Hmm....stupidest thing I've done. Probably trying to solo dark spark as a level 70WHM/35SMN. I thought to myself "how hard can it be? A party of 55's can do this." I was also a melee WHM/5THF (or 4BLM) after I got my subjob for a while. I stopped eventually.

Oh, and I suppose selling my o.kotes was stupid too. Bought them for 500k and spent the money on gear for another job. Leveled that job up for a while, then wanted to play MNK again and the price was up to 1.5m. And it kept going up. (4m now!) I didn't predict that gilsellers would move into the castle. I tend not to sell any expensive pieces of gear that I have unless I'm upgrading the item, and I'm sure that I either won't need it again or I feel the price isn't worth what it does and I don't need to be "pimped out" in a level 30-60 BCNM. >_>a
(Minus my leaping boots. Sold those things shortly after the new jobs came out. I practically never used them.)

Hmm... Oh, one more. Not to get so uptight in parties if people aren't doing their job "right". Some people suck, it's the truth. But I find that I find exp parties a LOT more enjoyable if I just filter damage done by everybody else and go on my merry way. I started leveling bard and had filtered damage so I could see monsters buffing...and realized that I had missed something that simple that would make exping more fun for me. And I had been playing for 2 years.

            Edit:
Another! Sharks in sea can run faster than a player can (I don't know if they can out run flee, but I don't sub THF when I'm in sea anyway). And they can aggro people who are hiding on a small patch of land.

That one was fun. A friend and her duoing partner died in sea, I went out to raise them. Got them up and then I got aggroed by a shark while sitting on a land patch. I told them not to help and ran off to some corner and died. Then the shark bolted back at them and killed them anyway. I still haven't figured that one out. (We weren't in a party either...so wasn't party aggro.)

well i've noticed that fighting a DC as a blm or whm is a bad idea

i still haven't figured out how to get past the bats in dunes without them aggroing me. .

and having benediction as a macro is a bad lol

Re: Things you learned the hard way.

There's a few ways to get past them without aggroing you. First one is being high enough level that they no longer aggro... Secondly you can just kill them all - they can't aggro you if you aggro them first! Or Sneak your way past. Sneak spell is level 20, and I really suggest getting it as soon as possible. Until then...your last option available is to buy silent oil, but that's a fairly expensive option for somebody leveling up their first job.

I usually just shout {Help me out!} Sand Bats! <pos> and someone high enough usually comes along and takes care of them.

WOOT Necro edit! I can't stand when I see an old grammatical error. Who knows how long that's been there?

Re: Things you learned the hard way.

                    When I first started playing I was wandering around South Gustaberg. I didn't know which monstered arrgoed and which didnt. Being only level 2 I walked up to a Quadav and got killed. u.u;;

And a mistake I keep doing? Getting stuck on Vomp Hill. I'd go up there to kill some hornets, sheeps and gobbies. And when I'm done I can't find my way down. u.u; And I had to be saved by an LS member a couple of times.

.....I still don't know my way down.

Oh yeah. Just because something has the same model as a mob that doesn't aggro, doesn't necessarily mean it doesn't aggro either. For example, Sand Tarantulas aggro while most other spiders don't. But I learned it walking through Konschtat ...

Learned this weekend that a 75NIN/WAR cannot solo tank the Dune Boots NM in Quicksand Caves. Figured it out quick when after my first voke I instanly lost 4 shadows lol.

Re: Things you learned the hard way.

There is no such thing as three good pick-up parties in a row.

There are people at level 43 who don't know about Silent Oils.

There are also people at level 43 who still need to be told that 12 MP on the WHM is kind of low to be pulling.

You do not have to go through Ifrit's Cauldron to get to the Gemini Falls area of Yuhtunga Jungle (This could also be: ffxi-atlas.com is not 100% definitive).

Checking your subjob before helping someone get Rank 4 is a good idea. (BRD/BLM? Not terribly effective with the healing.)

When someone is going to solo the DRG dragon for you, make sure they're at the same point in the quest or have the job unlocked.
                            Ellipses on Fenrir
There is no rush. If you're not willing to take your time, don't be surprised when no one wants to give you much of theirs.

I was farming in Konschtat when I see a mist lizard. I had know problem killing one at half health.

Some how I ended up aggroing 5 of them.
