    Re: Common decency

    /comfort Shykin

This game grants the ultimate anonymity. Others can't tell your gender, age, marital status, or sexual preference(s) from looking at your character. (It's also easy enough to lie about those, too.) What they *can* tell is your personality (or part of it) from your speech and actions in-game and on forums.

I know older people in real-life who are still immature. Conversely I know some teenagers who are very mature. If you're young and you want others to see your maturity, then just act naturally and maturely. Become a positive representative for your age group. If others still look down upon you only because you're young, they're just revealing their own limitations.

BTW, although most players are decent folk, this game is not immune to predators. Please be very careful about giving out any personal information.

Yeah, I'll agree. While it's ok to give your age and state out online, you should never discuss your b-day (My b-day on the forums is not my real b-day, btw), your address, or any other personal information: SSN, credit card number, etc.

        Re: Common decency

I don't have a credit card and I don't have my SSN memorized yet. Only friends know my B-day and other things. Besides my city is rather large. I don't ever give out first or last name unless it's to a friend. My defination of friend is different then others, it's more someone I can trust and rely on.

The reason why adults blame teenagers is because they are usually right. For example, when I was your age me and my friends were hellions. We would do stupid things, make obscene comments and cause all sorts of trouble. Also, when things would happen and teenagers were blamed we would all say, "Man, those adults are always out to get us!". Now I have grown up some and I find myself blaming teenagers for the stupid things that happen! And you know why? Because that was the same stuff I did as a kid. Now I know that not all kids are bad but when you are an adult, you will feel the same way as the rest of us.

Your birthday? I mean, I understand being cautious, but how is giving out my birthday going to bite me in the behind? Unless you're thinking someone could track you down by finding a random birthday party and hoping it's yours, I kind of think that hiding your birthday is a little too paranoid. Of course I'd never give out my address, phone number, SSN, or any information about my finances, but my birthday? I fail to see how some predator is going to use January 30, 1981 to harm me.

Although this question is directed to Mog, I think I can provide an answer.

Birthdays are used to "prove" identity. I get asked my birthday by many places including banks when I phone in for information. There's an absurd amount of information that's collected and databased (and most of us how no access to it - but companies have no problem paying for it!). So I don't think it's strange when people won't give their birthdays. A lot of small information can also add up to people tracking you down or assuming an identity. But I also don't think it's strange when people *do* give their birthdays. It's a matter of comfort level for each person.

As for me, I just put in the "birth-day" of my character on this site. ^_~

                Re: Common decency

What's your birthday is such a terrible security question. It seems like that information would be pretty easy to obtain for anyone that was serious about identity theft. Any cashier at a grocery store could assume my identity if I paid with a check. Then again, that's pretty much true of my credit card information as well. Now that I think of it, it's a wonder that doesn't happen more often.

At least "mother's maiden name" is relatively difficult to look up. Unless your family has one of those geneaology buffs in it who keeps their records online ... which my family does

                  Re: Common decency

I get random tells from guys saying "lawl ur seckci". I usually dot them in tell and say I told a GM and then they say "OKAY I'M SORRY", I never really do tell the GM, except one time this guy wouldn't listen.

I don't think you should have told a GM, who knows, it could have been a friend at his house, little brother or sister. I let my younger brother go on the boat once and he told people something about Mithra flees selling religion >.<

Plus, I rather know someone is doing random stupid stuff than using illegal programs on FFXI. I don't care if it doesn't affect gameplay, it is not allowed.

                  Edit:
And to reply to stuff above this post, I think I usually use my real birthday. Sometimes my older brothers. To keep safe though I never add MMORPG people to MSN, since my MSN has personal info.

                    Re: Common decency

Another experiance we had in my LS last night was someone that kept asking the same question over and over again. Eventually everyone was getting pissed at him and he started going emo on us. It got to the point that the second in comand of our LS told him that if he doesn't stop, he'll be kicked out. And he said he was sorry. One of the members asked him how old he was and it turned out he was 13. After that he started up again by pissing off the second in comand by making a comment about her parenting skills. And things got really ugly for a few minutes.

I sent him a /tell to knock it off or he will be kicked out and he told me he did it on purpose because he was bored. Yes he admitted that he was bored which pissed me off. So I told the LS leader and the second in comand on what he told me and now he's on watch.

Sometimes age has something to do with it. We have two other players that are 13 years old and they don't act like that. So I'm not saying all 13 year olds are emo punks.

lol! Boy do I have a story to tell you....

                      /start rant

When I joined my linkshell, there was a guy who was always emo. I, along with the majority of the linkshell tried to calm him down constantly, telling him to get help from a therapist (which he claimed he was at the time) and I told him to take a break from the game.

That sounds normal for an emo, doesn't it?

Well, one day when I was relatively pissed off, I told the ls what happened and the emo starts telling me that he'll beat the shit out of the guy, in a really serious attitude. Another time, out of nowhere, he shouts in the linkshell: "Hey guys!! Shiva's beating up on a Berry Grub!!" Nobody thought this was funny and he was just laughing away. Most of the time, anyways, he just talks to himself......in the linkshell.-.-

When we all had enough, we kicked him out of the linkshell and he begged to be invited back in, or he couldn't go on with life. We all ignored him, and before you know it, he starts giving me tells like:

                      "Tifa is so hot!"

"Black people make the world go round!"

Granted, I tried helping the kid out. I really did, but to me and everyone else, he's just an overly-emotional kid who needs to stop playing and actually do something with his life.

                      /end rant

While the birthday itself isn't that big of a deal, it can be used as a way of verifying your identity. Granted, it's not that big of a deal to give it out here and there. You just don't wanna flaunt your birthday around.

I cans ee where your comign from Nakti, but its not your Birthday Banks and that ask, but your Date of Birth i.e. 21/05/2006 if you were born today. When your birthday is is not really that much of a thing, its your DOB which is more. Though All banks etc should ask for DOB, Mother maiden name and password, they do in the Uk anyway and as for paying by credit or debit card at a shop (not online) we hve a system called chip and pin, where you don't sign anymore you ahve to input your pin number. (though I'm still skeptable aboput how much secure this is)

I've just never had anyone ask me for my birthday for verification purposes, it's usually the last four of my social and my mother's maiden name. And I would never be stupid enough to give all of that out.
