Suddenly I had an issue in RL, my lil sis began whining about how she wanted to watch TV (I was playing on an xbox360), and pretty soon my parents came in, demanding that I loggoff this instant >_<

What could I do? I needed to loggoff, so I told my party I was leaving and began to leave...

Then suddenly the screen filled with flaming messages, like ur an a** or a jerk, and I started to feel really guilty about having to leave them like that

My question is, is it right for your pt to flame you when u have a real life situation to deal with, especially one that you cant be aware of ahead of time (there was no way I could warn my party about having to leave in a few minutes, b/c my sis would instantly tell my parents to have me loggoff)?

PS: I posted this question on Alla's forum earlier, all I got in response was a bunch of flame replies and complaints about my "terrible" grammar (I used "u" instead of "you) X(
Well, since they're flaming you for immediately having to leave-tell them to go kiss the black dirt they're sitting in and walk away.

    Agreed.

Quite frankly, explain to your parents what you do in FFXI. Be blunt, tell them you ARE the freaking game if you must. Tell them that people are actually depending on YOU via FFXI (because they are)! Tell them that it's alot like virtual reality, with thousands upon thousands of people across the entire globe playing WITH YOU!

If by the end of the day, they still don't get it, well... tell them to go back to school. (Just kidding, but it could work.)

Re: When to leave your PT?

Wow, that really sucks, man. I'm married now, and both my husband and I play FFXI, so I don't really have the problem, however, a lot of my playtime happens when my babies are sleeping, so if one wakes up suddenly, I may have to go unexpectedly AFK to pick him up. I always try to wait for the end of the chain, and if not, then the end of the current battle. Usually an {I'm Sorry} AFK 2 seconds! is all I need, and when I return, baby on my lap and feeding happily, I can explain that my baby was crying and I just had to grab him up.

I don't usually XP unless both of my kids are down for the night, though the baby still has a tendency to wake up at several intervals. >.< He's easy to take care of, though, and I can continue to play while he's feeding and put him back to sleep when he's done. If either of the kids is awake, I'll spend my time crafting, questing, or farming - something I can do without needing to be in front of the screen constantly, so if someone needs a "baba" or if a diaper needs changing, I don't have to worry about anything. The fact that I have two kids under two has contributed to the fact that I've played this game for about two years now and I've only got one job to 50, but my kids definitely come before FFXI.

My advice: Do as I do ... XP when you know that there is no one else who will want the TV/computer. Meaning, when everyone's asleep, or when they're not home. When they're around, spend your time doing something else. Leveling crafts, fishing, or farming are all productive things you can do in-game, and then when you get the chance to play for long stretches you'll be able to jump right in to exp'ing.
