I had so much more butter than I needed to level. I think I had like 60 or so stacks.

I bought a newbie WAR an axe and a Gaxe after he attempted to save my poor RNG butt from a T quadav.

Yeah, he was undoubtedly skilling up Smithing. But Aspis is not really worth much to a vendor, so it's just as useful to give away some free shields while you have them as it is to dump them all at a vendor. (Or, turn them in to a regional control NPC.)

Regardless of whether he was skilling up or not, he didn't have to give the shields to anyone. He could have npc'd them and not bothered taking his time running around a zone and msging people asking if they wanted one. What he did was extremely kind and giving.

            He sounded generous and helpful.

One of the things that got me hooked to this game more than anything was that in the beginning, there were lots of really kind "higher level" players who would raise, donate things, look after you when you were screwing things up...

Even though I am not Uber or anything, I am now in a position to try and return some of that help to others.

Like someone in this thread already said - it's not help returned from the same person to the same person; if things work out in an ideal sort of way, you spread the love around and then someone else gets to carry on the chain.

Yesterday, I saw a very odd flip-side to this helping out-thingy... I was in Dunes because I had offered to loan some of my gear to a member of the LS I have recently joined. So, whilst there, I got a /tell from someone for a Raise. I rush in, raise the player and we chat for a bit. I ended up hanging around for about half an hour and just curing if needed, and killing off any links if they accidentally pulled three lizards (you know how it goes there).

            So far so good...

... until someone from a different party sends me this completely unexpected angry and aggressive /tell about "stealing XP mobs" and "the last person who did that was reported to a GM and went to jail".

I tried to explain what I was doing, but in the end I got angry and maybe said a few not-so-nice things back... what an asshat.

I love to help new players, sometimes I think its more fun than leveling up. Plus you have no idea how big of an impact it makes on them.

Re: Nice Gestures vs. Self Progression

While leveling my cooking I gave away tons of things I had made, but a lot when to the npc. I even picked up a new friend who was new to the game and also leveling cooking, so when I went to get more water clusters I killed a few extra elementals and gave them the clusters. I got a thousand thank yous for it, and the promise that when they got "as big as I was" (that made me chuckle) they'd return the favor.
Thats awesome that the player made you the shield for free, shows that despite the few asses running around the game, they don't overshadow the good ones.

Re: Nice Gestures vs. Self Progression

I'm glad to see there are still a lot of nice players out there.
I ended up taking over a party in the dunes when the leader had to go and had to grab some new people.
I had one idiot in the pt that started lotting on all the crystals that had dropped. (about 6 to 8 at that moment between fire and wind crystals). I sent a /p Please no lotting to which he replied he needed them for smithing. Me and another in the pt comented at the same time that other people in the pt have uses for them as well. I proceeded to advise through /p chat to lot on the ones curently in the treasury and let fall all others after this fall normally. People did keeping him from getting all the crystalls. He got so mad at this he waited for the puller to bring in a mob and he disbanded. Saw him seeking pt once the mob was dead. I'm withholding the idiots name since he has no sub and is obviously new so I will hope he improves over time.
Thanks for the examples of people out there being nice. Sometimes its easy to forget the pleasant ones after dealing with a prick. Keep up the random acts of kindness /cheer
