  • Objective question about Lag and besige!

Last night, some friends mentioned over Teamspeak how horrible the lag is during besige. Some of their arguments were that they couldnt even see the mobs, and when they were finally able to target them they were dead. On my server at tone time there were like 200+ people on al Zhabi, so that might be a reason. For some thing or another I have yet to experience this event.

I would like to see what you guys have to say based on your experience. Is lag a big issue? Have you found this event to be enjoyable?

    Thanks,
    DH

On occasion I'll get a bit of lag but, even in Dynamis, I have very few issues. Adjust your settings to low before Beseiged starts, if you haven't already.

Re: Objective question about Lag and besige!

I play on PS2, and I havet yet experienced Besige I am just a bit curious at how some of my friends were brining up some noticable lag issues. I am sure it will be something like dynamis. Btw TGM, have you found this event fun yourself?

      Thanks in advance!

I set my char models to min and I put all my filters on but still i noticed some lag. I think that will calm down once besiged is here for a while. i dont think it will be quite so popular. but then again im probably wrong lol
Thanks to Kazuki for the amazing sig pic ^^

Well, loosing the beneficts of the astral candecense (spelling) might be bad, so i think it will be a matter of lossing it and getting it back... loosing it and getting it back. IMO. so there might actaully be times where we will just have to go get it back!

Re: Objective question about Lag and besige!

For me the problem wasn't the lag (Rdm 70 and I couldn't do damage, so I was curing anyone I tabbed past that looked like they needed it) but the fact that I couldn't target people who were next to me. During the first besieged of 3 consecutive ones, we took some major losses, so I was trying to raise or cure the mages in our alliance, but I couldn't target them even when standing next to them. It would take a minute for them to appear so that I could /ta WHMname or /ma Raise WHMname.

If I lowered the character models displayed, people would spawn faster, but in a more limited space, is that right?

Re: Objective question about Lag and besige!

We've been having 400+ people in our Beseiges, and yes they can be horrible laggy. Once the beseige begins and people start to die, it helps relieve some of the lag. The trick is to not dieing so quickly is that too many people camp at the gate the mobs enter through. The mobs can see them, but they can't see the mobs, so they knowingly make themselves easy targets for the mobs... I tend not to raise those people since they clearly have no understanding of strategy.

Instead, you pull back some, don't do massive AOEs to them cause you'll pull many mobs at once and die. Have your entire alliance plus another full alliance work together, pull one mob and drop the mob. Mages should stay back to avoid the nasty AOEs, and should never stand with your backs to the main monster battle group. A silly RNG and BLM was nuking our mob from range, but was standing on the side as the rest of the mob group and had mobs come up from behind them and take the two of them out.

If you can afford a RR item, use it, the cheapy RR1 earrings are helpful since there is no exp loss and it gets you up faster without stressing the stressed mages.

Re: Objective question about Lag and besige!

I'm pretty sure it happens in like a "first come, first serve" basis when you turn down the number of characters to be displayed. The first ones your computer knows about, get displayed. It should help with the lag problems though as your computer is struggling less to get the information it needs per rendering/update cycle.

I would worry about turning down the animation rate, shadows, weather effects, and other graphical fun stuff before I worry about turning down the number of people. Given the number of mobs and other surfaces that could be shown at a given time, I doubt the number of people being shown is your major concern.

I don't think the number of characters being shown is important, because I'm sure FFXI has an internal cutoff for it anyway, it won't show infinite models but rather stop at some hard limit. You have the power to reduce the hard limit, but it can't be removed completely wether the limit is 50 or 400.

Thanks for your input guys. I am just listening to divided opinions on this event so far. And I wanted to know what I could expect, since I a planning to stay for one if it happens tonight on my server. It will be intresting to see a the astral candecense finally stolen!

Re: Objective question about Lag and besige!

I play on ps2 as well, and yes, I have had some lag issues. Most notable are the loading time of other people and the mobs. I can tab around looking and see nothing on the screen, but the cursor picks out the people and mobs. So I'm curing invisible people and hitting invisible mobs. It only lasts a couple of seconds, so not too annoying.

What is annoying is anything outside of a very small circle (think curaga range) is totally blank unless I move to that area and wait the 2-3 seconds for everything to load.

I've set my filters to only show me what happens in my party, that helps a lot in dynamis, so I kept it that way for besieged, and it seems to work well (for me) to help reduce the lag in typing. (I absolutely hate being in a crowded area and the words I type are swallowed by the lag.)

Lag was a huge issue for me. I was running around at about 3 FPS durring the whole thing and macros definatly didn't want to go. But even so, I still liked it.

                      Yes. My computer sucks.

Welcome to the world of WOW PVP. That's how it is all the time in places like OG, where you could have 60 alliance players storming the gates and about 15 NPCs and 100+ horde defending. I remember when it got so bad, I got ganked even before I could see the animation for it (HP to zero and was that way for a full 3 seconds before I saw the animation of the attack on me and the subsequent death animation)

                            I LOVE IT!!!!

To be quite honest I loved the concept of it but I had heard so-so things about it. So I wasn't too hyped and one day I happened to be nearby when people started saying they were coming. I still didn't go to town though and watched my son's screen as him and some lsmates went outside the city see the advancing troops. Then I got the biggest laugh when they attacked some Scout Pups I believe and were getting their butts handed to them!!

                            *WHACK*
                            "I hit one!.........OMFG RUN!!!"
                            "Why?"
                            *WHACK*
"O....M....G......RUN...these things are kicking my butt!"
*2 lvl 75's booking for the zone and looking like ding dongs!*

So then I turned back to town because I figured one of them was going to die. (My son did but only because he blew up!) Shortly after I got to town I went up on the ramparts and suddenly got a cutscene. (Very cool and gets you revved up btw!) And then they came, and we kicked their behinds! About 10 mins later, ANOTHER wave of them came! I was hooked! It might end up getting old eventually but right now its the coolest thing since sliced bread and I recommend that anyone who can participate in it should!

Re: Objective question about Lag and besige!

I have participated in 2 besieged as a lvl 61-62 BRD. The first one I was up on the rampart, this was before they had done any adjustments. I basically did NOTHING, the battle was over within like 3 minutes.

The second time was after the first first adjustment, against a lvl 5 horde. I positioned myself at the gates with my party... and I loved it. I was able to cast on mobs, buff my party, and engage the mobs. I didn't suffer from horrible lag (granted, I have a VERY high end system), but the mobs didn't last long once people began to concentrate on them. I always targetted mobs that were being left alone, normally using a lullaby and elegy on them.

It was great fun, in my opinion.

I think it will only improve as SE tweaks it, and the number of people who rush to defend drops. The biggest issue is having 200+ people participating, all at the gates. I think it is designed to have everyone spread out a little more, with lines of defense. One thing I think that would benefit the system is to have the beastman have squads that teleport into random areas of the zone, so that we would be forced to not concentrate at the gates and spread out a little.
