  • Graphics upgrade

    Dear fellow FFXI players,
I have recently purchased this game for the Xbox 360, and I mist say, it is incredible. I played the beta version before, and that was fun too. I can easily get past the graphics of this game, and I have nothing against them. But, I was wondering if there was some way that there could be a graphics upgrade. Some 360 players only judge a game by its graphics. I dont, but I think it would make this game really shine.
And for those with really high-end computers, this could be an option for you too.
This would be optional, but people who wanted better graphics could get them

    What do you think?

for PC we can crank up the resolution beyond the FFXI default's settings. By manually input the resolution right into the game's registry.

There's a tool that that helps you adjust this easily, posted in this Thread

I don't know if there's any settings you can do with Xbox tho since I don't own the console.

      Re: Graphics upgrade

I think Jenova is talking about SE making versions of the game that have had their graphics beefed up for Xbox 360 and/or PC, like higher-resolution textures or real anti-aliasing or something.

On the off chance they did offer it, I'd probably be happy with it. My processor sucks, so it would depend on how much it ate up performance. But I don't think it's terribly likely to happen. And it's not a very big priority for me. The game's graphics are pretty good as-is, and I'm not sure people who need them to be significantly better are the kind of player I'd want to have around.

        Re: Graphics upgrade

I've been messing around tweaking the graphic settings on my PC. Though I have improved the graphics greatly by doing so there are still quite a bit of glitches I can't get rid of. Usually its just textures that flash or disappear at certain camera angles or little dotted white lines that will appear on the landscape. Newest one I came across was in the rented room in Jueno, the window texture will disappear if the camera isn't directly facing it. I'm really not sure if its my video card and/or PC causing it, though the PC I use now is way better than what I was using before when I originally played FFXI at NA launch so I don't think I should be seeing these kinds of glitches anymore.

Anyways regardless of the very minor issues I experience I do think SE should look into updating the graphics at some point within the next year or two. The game overall still looks great to me, but it definately wouldn't hurt to enchance the graphics.

          Re: Graphics upgrade

I believe the problem is that a non-HD TV can't display very high resolutions and since FFXI doesn't support AA and AF you can't make it look very good on a TV.

Still, I bet it would be possible to make the game look a lot better if players could access the registry in the 360 version like we do on the PC. It's silly how SE doesn't want to bring out the full potential of the game.

            Re: Graphics upgrade

Reading about those glitches Protes mentioned made me realise it wasn't just my setup that suffers from them (although none of them bother me, I'm used to them now)

Have you also noticed the gfx glitch where spiders that crawl around on the ceiling in crawlers nest (and other places) have a black square box around them? Looks as if the mask or transparency isn't working right, but at a completely different angle its fine. Could be just an ATI thing as I'm using latest drivers with an 1800XT PCIe card.

I thought I'd never get slowdown on my system (Dual core AMD64 4800+, 512MB 1800XT gfx card, 2GB RAM etc), but in fact a couple of -ga spells even bring my system to a crawl during their animations (firega is one). I have all the settings on full (including the 2048 texture reg hack), res is 1152x864, the only thing I cut back on is I only have a proper shadow on my character, leaving simple shadows for everyone else (otherwise Jeuno slowdown is noticable).

I like good graphics as much as the next guy, but framerate and no-lag is more important to me, especially for Garrisons !!

I get annoying glitches with simple shadows on. I believe it has to do with mip-mapping, but when I get closer to objects with simple shadows I get odd lighting/shadow glitches around them on the terrain. Full shadows work fine, but they're incredibly processor intensive so I get lots of slow down. Currently I'm stuck using no shadows. =(

my opinion is that the only thing SE could/should do for pc and xbox360 users is offer the option to use a higher quality texture set.

that's the glaringly weak point imho in FF.

I'd love some multi processor support too but that's not likely to happen unless the engine gets a thorough revamp, which is extremely unlikely.

Textures should be a really simple fix.

This is a known bug with newer nVidia drivers. It's been there for quite some time, SE finally acknowledged it a month or so ago, and said they're working with nVidia. No new information has been released yet.

The 360 FFXI supports 720 progressive scan.
