  • Is life worth waiting for?

This is general discussion plus I see "Dreams in vana'diel" up above, so this seems the appropriate place.

This not only pertains to FFXI, but all things fantasy. We who play FFXI spend most of our time in a fantasy world, am I wrong? I'm sure that most, if not all, have wished, at least once, to trade their lives here on our planet for a world where magic, honor, bravery, love, and mystique rein supreme. But you have to ask yourself, would you really want that life if you were born into it? Is it this world here that makes that one seem so fantastic? If we were born into that world would we be happy? Given the chance... would you trade everything you have here in this world, for nothing but a life in the other?

It would be nice to roam the woods of San d'oria on a slowly Lightsday afternoon, or ride a chocobo on the shoreline of bibikibay. Elvaan holding council with their greatest warriors, Tarus and Mithra running around playing some game with a sleep spell, meeting the greatest heros of Vana'diel in Jeuno. Fishing in some remote part of the world, sitting back and chatting with a long time friend as you do so. Aren't these the type of things we yearn for? We all want to be a hero deep down inside, we all want great friends who will never abandon us, we want a life worth living. Does the world we live in offer that? Maybe.

We have our families here, our children, our lovers, our passions. Could we give it all up for a life that seems so much better than the one we have?

Here's the question, would you give up your life here for one in Vana'diel?
(I'm not like trying to start any contreversy or anything, just wondering how many people here love our world of Vana ^.^ b)

BTW... I would sometimes, and sometimes I wouldn't.

Edit: And yes, I do mean an alternate reality. I wouldn't want to sit down and play FFXI forver... oh no. And for thos who think I'm a girl, I'm not...

"Oh, you ca'n't help that," said the Cat: "we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're Mad."
"How do you know I'm mad?" said Alice.
"You must be", said the Cat, "or you wouldn't have come here."

Welcome to Alice in FFXI =P

Re: Is life worth waiting for?

    short answer, no.

    long answer, noooooooooooooo.

ok well, I have so much things I want to do in my life ^^
I defintiely have a very good timein FFXI and often got carry away, but in no way I lost interest on my real matters at hand.

People need goals to fight for... FFXI offers you this so called goals in an easy to access way. Level to 75, get your craft skill up, ontain items XXX, kill this boss etc etc they are all handed to players.
Which is the reason a lot of people got distracted too much from real life IMO, because knowing your own goal or even finding one is not an easy task. Living such an ordinary life, working ordinary jobs, raising ordinary families, so ordinary aren't tehy.

Re: Is life worth waiting for?

This game is just a hobby for me. I mean, I love playing it, but I'm perfectly happy with the separation of real life and game life.

That said, I've read some books where I've almost wanted to be in them or know the characters, so I can relate to a certain extent.

Bottom line, I like my life. It's far from perfect, but every small reward here is better than the biggest and most rare reward in Vana'diel.

Sure it'd be fun to smash an orc in the face with a large sword, or cast magic and shit, but I like the serenity of our world. Sure, extraordinairy feats would be fun, but... I just don't know how it'd work.

Btw, OP, look into a Philosophy major. XD

Also note: If people say yes, SE is definately doing something right.

If people say yes, I'm a little bit sad. :/ But then again, they probably just lack the perspective necessary to see that RL > Games.

Re: Is life worth waiting for?

I'd do it. A peaceful life doesn't fit me, and roaming around, pushing my physical and mental limits at my discretion, along with discovering the truely amazing, and dark secrets, all while exploring a vast globe and picking up odd jobs here and there appeals to me so much more than... real life.

It depends. I'd love to take up a life in Vana'diel.

Never die, just HP, woot woot. Transportation so cheap and easy...

Some thing would be a pain, but just the world itself would be so worth living in. And it's not like i'm attached to much in this world.

A life where I don't have to eat to stay alive. I always have clothing of some sort and most importantly free housing PLUS an annoying servant. Hard to say no. I'll take adventures over my current life anyday x.x

Actually, sometimes I would want it. It would be nice to live in a world that still held some mystery; some new places/things to discover. But I do love my family, so I wouldn't want to live in Vanadiel unless they could come with ^^

I think she meant literally. Such as, if Vanadiel was a REAL place would you want to live there. if you live in that world, you wouldn't think about racing to level 75, beating bosses, etc. WE think that way because it's a game. If it was real, it would be different.

I've had time to write a book

                      About the way you act and look;
                      I haven't got a paragraph.
Words are always getting in my way,
                      Anyway, I love you.
That's all I've got to tell you,
That's all I've got to say.

Nah , I'm too attached to things in real life.

Well, if it were a real place, it would have to be pretty darn different from the Vana'diel we know. Yeah, I think it's cool to be an adventurer and kill monsters and save the world, but then again, that's why I play the game.

I mean, sure a real world where we can't die (forever) and we have all these nifty powers and everything is easy would be nice, but we also wouldn't have the ability to effect change, and we wouldn't be truly indpendent. That would be awful.

Re: Is life worth waiting for?

I have too many priceless things in life to give up, but I would trade who I am in Vana'diel for who I am in life in a heartbeat.

When I started playing, Lago was a sock puppet, an avatar and nothing more, simply a way for who I am in real life to interact with others in the game world. But the more I played him, the more I invested with him, the more he grew into something outside of myself. I don't know it was the shedding of social baggage that affected this change or the anonymity of the internet that is known to turn perfectly rational people in real life into slavering beasts online. Nonetheless, Lago has grown into something greater than myself. He is knowledgable and dependable, someone people call on when they need help. He has clear goals, with the strength and patience to carry them out, even feats that others didn't believe possible. He is clear-minded and in control, never letting negative people get the best of him and always dealing on his own terms, even in situations where he's in way over his head. And though this might go without saying for a taru, he's pretty popular with the ladies. ^^ I've actually become good friends in real life with a couple great girls through my tarutaru.

I consider my taru to be my ideal self and the person at the keyboard merely his shadow. FFXI has become my "magic feather," letting me express traits and behaviors I have never been able to manifest in the real world. Of course, the moral of all magic feather stories is that the power is in yourself and needing the feather was an illusion, but my story hasn't yet ended. I still wish I could be Lago.

Edit: I watched Kingdom of Heaven the other night on Cinemax. The coolest character dies a quarter of the way through, but not before saying this: "There, at the end of the world, you are not what you were born but what you have it in yourself to be." That is what Vana'diel is to me.

The one thing that comes to mind reading the first post is "the grass is always greener on the other side".

To answer the question, no, I would not trade my real life for a life of running from goblins.
