Yeah, I get that (and answered in that vein in a later post). I still prefer Earth to Vana'diel though.

Besides, what I meant was that real life is better than game life. Which is why I said that I'd take the smallest reward in real life over the largest one in Vana'diel.

Before I had my kids, I definitley would have, if only for a few days. Now, I wouldn't do anything where I would ever have to give them up. Although I have wished that I could cast magic the way my character can. And that I could autofollow when driving.

Heh, give that autofollow while driving thing time. It's not an impossible idea. As for the white magic, well...

          Cute kids, by the way.^^

                Some people enjoy Soccer.

                Some people enjoy Poetry.

                Some people enjoy the Movies.

                And some people enjoy Fishing.

                I, enjoy Role Playing Games.

By no means would i trade real life for it, but it would indeed be freakin sweet if i was born in a fantasy world, indeedy-whopdeedo, living a life without worries, thats the part i'd enjoy the most, FFXI does have it all, if your characters suffered fatigue from lack of sleep, needed nurishment and food to survive and grew old with time, FFXI would be an alternative to the real world.

I attempt this every time I get behind the wheel! I use a controller to play on my PC and when I drive my car and think of putting on my cruise control, you'll find me tapping my steering wheel with my left index finger......come one auto run/follow dang it!! LOL I laugh at myself everytime I do it and once my mother was in the car. I burst into laughter and she kept asking me what was so funny. That only made me laugh more because I was thinking about how I would tell my 75 yr old mother who wouldn't have the faintest clue of what I was talking about, how I was trying to get the car to auto run! She just went "Pfft, your nuts!" and ignored me! LOL

I wouldn't trade my life for any game. There just are too many things I would miss. Silly things that most people would look at me and go WTF over. The smell of freshly polished furniture. The dog chasing and barking at my vacuum cleaner hose. The smell of freshly baked bread. The looks on my family's faces when they take a bite of their supper that I lovingly made for them. The smell of my lilac bushes in bloom. My grandson yelling "GAMMA COME!" when he walks in my door. Crawling into bed after posting on this forum and snuggling up next to a nice warm soft hubby. And many many more.... Life is too full of little pleasures and ones that I just could not live without.

I think thats a very mature way to look at it and so true to many people.

As the thread is about would you want to be your character?

The short answer as mentioned by otehr people is no. You go for a stroll in the woods with your favourite Mithra, out jumps an orc grunt who lunges a spear into you. You have to fight. When you live a real life do you want to fight to survive all the time, always having to watch your back etc. granted in some countires in this screwed up world we live in people do, but with many of us being from Safe (yes I know wth certain crime, etc. in the US and Uk that can be argued) 1st world counties where we have a cetain amount of freedom I much prefer this life to perhaps that of my character. The goals in RL are much more rewarding than a crystal, new bit of equipment etc. and last longer than say a few levels till you need the next bit of equipment.

Its a strange way to look at life but when you look at your character who has only a few goals, you realise how much more RL has to offer you.

An interesting point is that we may not be able to live in Vanadiel, but think about it, how you talk in teh chat window to people, decissions you make etc. surely part of you is broadcast to everyone via your character so in spirit, you are living in vandiel, just not physically.

Re: Is life worth waiting for?

There was a time when I would have given up my real life to live my life in Norrath in EQ, but I was a defeated person in real life, an addict. While I may have overcome my MMORPG addiction, I still play them and maintain the line of fantasy and reality now.

I've watched this game become a prison for friends, who just happen to like thier trappings. To them, this is now their real lives. They've forsaken friendships, college, marriages and jobs to maintain their accomplishments. These people are no longer my friends, but shells of who they were, thinking they've become successful in some way. In the past, I've made efforts to save them, but in retrospect, they can only save themselves. I know because that's what I had to do and no one was there for me.

Vana'diel would be a nice place to live in, but its still just a fantasy realm. The only way I'd ever wish to live there is if I was lost once again in real life. But I have no desire to become that weak again.

I wouldn't want to live in Vana'diel. The world of FFXI is a world of great peril. Why else does each realm need several thousand adventurers just to keep it from being overrun by rapidly reproducing beetles, sheep, crabs, etc?

Re: Is life worth waiting for?

Maybe it's because I'm a coward, or not much of a macho man, but there's no way I'd want to trade my comfortable and more-or-less safe life for the life of my adventurer. Seeing (and smelling and touching) real FFXI locales would be great, but I don't want to be killed by a rabbit when I walk out of the city gates.

My desision would depend on a few things. Is this another reality with basicly the same rules of nature with some additions that allow for all the magic, ect... that exsist in FFXI? Can the people I care about choose the come with me? If the answer to both of those are yes then I'd go in a heartbeat. Life in this day an age is far too scripted for my taste. I can see where some would enjoy the safety and leisure this allows, but I'd prefer something a little more lively.

Unless you're lucky enough to truly be fasinated by your career a good bit of your life is fairly...empty. At least that's the way it seems for me. I think of all the things I've acomplished in RL, college, jobs, promotions, ect... and the things I'm more fufilled by are my family, martial arts prowess, and that moutain I hiked (georgous at the peak).

I, enjoy Role Playing Games. 8+ hours a day, sometimes to deep in the night, for some players even whole nights, so no sleep, and for various other people, like younger players, skipping school to get that bit more exp to level 50...

Be careful, sneaky addiction. Most people don't know they're addicted, or what being addicted actually means.

Ugh, i cant play for more than 2-3 hours because of a full time job.

                                It's infact surreal to me how people can play more than 5 hours straight, funny story, just yesterday i was having an argument with my best ingame friend who plays all fucking day and was sent to the hospital with a nervous break down, the doctor told him to sleep, alot, and something came over me to yell at him o.o;

And those examples were just to clarify my point, ofcourse theres people who's hobbies are mostly their lifestyle, i speak for myself though...

not that i havent played for 8 hours straight on weekends, but i get incredibly burn out and end up not playing for a while, it happens when theres really nothing else to do
