I was in Buburima Penninsula last night levelling my WHM, when I saw a train of gobs chasing someone towards the Tahrongi zone. Being a fairly common occurrance, I did what I usually do and head off to heal them up. This time, I got chatting to the patient and they were trying to get their subjob items. More specifically, they were a level 20 WAR who had already got two of them and was trying to solo bogies for a Bloody Robe. I warped back to Windy, changed jobs and came back to help them out.
After a quick tour of Bibiki Bay while waiting for nightfall, the robe dropped from the fourth bogy. They were overjoyed, particularly as they'd been trying to get it for the past week. I then spent another hour or so talking them through some of the aspects of the game that come with experience - suitable subjobs for starting out with, changing to a level 1 job for that first run to Jeuno (and setting your hp en route), needing 4 Gausebit Grasses when you get there, the difference between the Kazham and normal airship passes, starting out in crafting, where to buy some of the maps, which websites are useful for what information (which strangely led to having to explain what IGE is...) and so on.
It was strange to see the game through someone else's eyes, to be reminded of what it what like starting out when everything was new and a great adventure. With all that's happened recently, it's easy to become jaded and forget why we do this.
Incidentally, in a moment of synchronicity, my Dedication ran out just as we zoned into Windy. Experience isn't just about the numbers.
