Re: So someone misbid on my leaping boots for 10mil
Actually, if a bank error occurs that puts more money in your account, they do take it back when they find out. If you remove the money and spend it, they will come after you legally. Had an uncle almost end up in jail due to a bank error in his favor of about 20k. He took it out, and when the bank came after him for it he pretended like he didn't have it. After looking at jail time, the money magically reappeared. You figure when the money ends up in your account by mistake, it's because it came out of someone else's by mistake. It's just like when there was a bank error where money came out of my account to pay someone else's electric bill. The bank made it right.
But this is a game. There is no law about keeping it and if you follow the rules laid out by SE, you aren't stealing or doing anythign wrong. The decision is solely up to the person. I personally usually return if I can track the person down and it was an obvious misbid, like stack price for a single item. If it's something where I can't tell if it's a misbid, I'll try to contact the person or send it back if they contact me. If I can't track the person down or didn't realize they misbid, then I only worry about it if they contact me. But that's just the way I am. I feel guilty if I feel like I took advantage of someone.
It all comes down to what an individual feels like doing. But if you've been on the other end of it and had no luck recovering, you have experience of how it feels. I know I wouldn't want to make someone feel that way, even if I never got the same courtesy back in return.
