    Re: Role Playing?

Interestingly, in my case, I find that if you focus on the core sense of who the character is, throughout the process of character development you will come to understand the character's background more. I start a character on a more or less skeleton background, usually, and flesh out the background details over time.

In Kumei's case, being orphaned has actually drawn more people into her background. In addition to a dead father and a mother who mysteriously disappeared, she has a dead first foster parent, a second foster parent who she eventually ran away from, and a moogle who has looked after her for many years. Her NPC fellow is ICly one of the few surviving members of her father's adventuring party (which included her foster parents).

Kumei started out as a Thief and is a skilled pickpocket, and this is how she managed to get by mostly on her own in Bastok for a long time. She has developed a rather clear fear of abandonment that complicates forming relationships with others. Even though she now has friends who can help her and other ways to support herself, she still tries to do things on her own and resorts to thievery at times because she's afraid to rely on others, though she's mostly given up on picking pockets to support herself. However, she seems to have developed kleptomaniac tendencies, and often steals just to amuse or challenge herself.

Koren actually does have a living family, though. Her father works at the Bastokan consulate in San d'Oria (and is privately of the opinion that Prince Pieuje should succeed the throne; between that and Kamiel's support of Prince Trion, both positions she's come to understand and respect, she's still not sure where she stands on that. Hence the San d'Oria 7-10 missions will be important to her development. Now if I can just figure out how to get her to Rank 6 without Kamiel's help. . Her sister became an adventurer in Bastok.

I suppose I may as well post the RPLS forum, since we actually have some character profile and log information up now, though the logs are pretty sporadic as yet, I haven't had time to edit and put things up yet, so aside from somewhat old stuff there's mostly just the sessions we've done on IRC, since we actually have an HTML logger for IRC RP that decreases the editing burden dramatically.

I'm curious. How does one RP in a MMO? And i've heard of rules that you have to follow? A handy dandy link with info would be great.

      Thanks

Roleplaying is just acting. You're given a character (one likely made by yourself), with some background information (things such as a brief family history, happy moments in life, tragedies, religious beliefs, etc.), and you try your best to be that character.

There's no official rules to roleplaying, but there are tons of unofficial rules that people follow to varying degrees. I think the only rule that most people tend to agree on is not to "god-mode", which is basically performing actions for other people against their will. A simple example would be the classic "Cowboys-and-Indians" game you'd play as a kid, and one kid saying "I shoot you in the head and you die!" Yes, he can shoot one of the other kids in the game, but he can't decide for that kid whether they die or not.

There are other rules that some players will typically follow. One is to be original; don't make a Cloud, or a Sephiroth, or a Naruto, or some other popular character. It's been done. To death. Seriously.

Another is to be at least somewhat believeable in terms of the world you're playing in; don't make a half-Taru/half-Yagudo, or a vampire, or a demon or something equally ridiculous since it's unlikely that you could adequately represent them. People are just gonna laugh at you if you tell them that your half-Yagudo TaruTaru is a demon from outer space who crash-landed here a thousand years ago and was raised by a group of sentient Opo-Opos in Yutuhnga Jungle that nobody knows about who taught you the secrets of Ninjutsu and how to make Galkan Sausage out of thin air. You're also the Star Sibyl's son and everybody knows your name even though you're a level 1 with no fame in any city whatsoever, and you're the Galkan Talekeeper. Doesn't that just sound absolutely ridiculous?

You should also try to avoid meta-gaming. Meta-gaming is basically a transferrence of knowledge YOU know (such as another character's secrets that you may have read in that player's background info, or even their name) and having your character reflect that knowledge. For example, if you saw my character and said "Hello, Kwanta!", he's going to be asking you questions such as "How do you know my name?!" and "Who are you working for?"

Here's a good one I picked up while roleplaying in WoW; it's okay to be normal. There's nothing wrong with playing a character that has had an average life, since he/she will be involved in extraordinary things once this "adventuring" thing takes off for them. So there's really no need to have killed off both of your character's parents in a Yagudo invasion, or even at all, for that matter; they could live in the residential area somewhere, and you visit while going to your Mog House. Nothing wrong with that, and it gives you some roleplay options; have a couple of good friends roleplay as your character's parents, and introduce your character's soulmate to them. Get into an argument with them 'cuz they think that adventuring is too dangerous. Stuff like that.

        That's all I can think of at the moment. My brain is fried now. x_x;

RP is so fun, but no one on my server ever does it.

Rules vary from RP shell to shell. Common rules usually include:
--No God moding- that is, no making your character invincible with an array of super powers gained from some distant planet. God moding also includes not forcing other characters into actions against their will, such as forcibly killing someone's character without their permission. Also...your character can't be some reincarnation of Altana or Promathia (or some made up god.)
--OOC- Most RP shells put ooc (out of character) chat in parenthesis in order to tell when someone is in character or not. This usually depends on which shell you join and how strict it's enforced is completely up to the leaders who created the community. Most of the structured RP shells have a rule about this and also have ooc limited over shell chat.
--No Internet shorthand- When RPing, using Internet shorthand is a big no. Examples include but are not limited to: lol, omg, whm, plz, u, etc. Words and phrases typically should be spelled fully and as correctly as possible.
--Avoid spoilers- A lot of RP communities have seperate storylines from the actual game. As a result, you're expected to not announce in game story spoilers in character. For example: Let's say you battled the Shadowlord and beat him. You announce in character over the shell "I just killed the Shadowlord!" Okay...now what about the members below rank 5 in your shell? They haven't beat the Shadowlord yet and according to you, they can't because he's already dead. Because of things like this, in game stories tend to be seperate from RP stories.

There are usually other rules as well but those tend to be the basics. You can find various guides to roleplaying on several of the RP community websites.

                Re: Role Playing?

I adore roleplaying, and for a long time I wasn't able to do any except with my b/f who plays the game with me. Then, thanks to an odd random topic in LS one day, I realized that a handful of my fellow LS members also enjoyed RP. A few days later, the leader sent me a /tell saying he was starting up a RP dedicated LS. ^_^' And we've already started role playing the storyline and whatnot. But we do it all in LS chat because... well, some people get upset for some reason.

It's actually made the game much more enjoyable, and it gives me something to look forward to doing when I don't have time/am not in the mood to level or farm. If you can find a group of people you're close with and who enjoy doing it, it adds many more layers to the game, imo.

                    Re: Role Playing?

Bismarck use to have a large rp ls called dawn. However is began falling apart and there were many attempts at new RPLS's however none have come close to dawn. I'd love to have another on bismarck I am thinking of starting one but I don't feel I could lead a ls. Most RPLS's have ground rules, one of ours was no cross breeding hume + mithra whatever as far as the story has gone no 2 races can breed. Makes logical sense though. We said moogles could block our powers when we changed job. I'd need to look up on it more. There are no levels just your ablities. No one man could kill an army in rp, sure 5-6 weaker we could kill easy however an army would eventually wear us down (HP gauge!) and kill us. We did events on the story in the FFXI world dawn was a adventurer ls that defeated the Shadow Lord when he came back (5-2 I think). I do miss such times *sniff*

I'd like to get involved with an RP linkshell here on Asura server. My character's name is Praetorian and if anyone can send me a message in game or here letting me know. I've played RP games, the tabletop variety, and would like to expeirence this side of FFXI as well.
