    Re: Role Playing?

There's no doubt some potential awkwardness, but for the most part it's worked out okay, and the mysterious moogle abilities have actually provided more interesting elements to the story. In fact, Kumei was an orphan and was looked after for some years by a moogle, Kulina, who went missing around the time of the Starlight Festival. One of the scenes we're doing outside of the game because of difficulties doing it in-game involves a trip to the M.H.M.U.'s headquarters to meet with the "Director of Special Projects" who seems to have some unknown connection both to Kulina and to one of my characters, Koren.

      Re: Role Playing?

You guys are thinking too much about it. There is nor right or wrong way to RP as long as it doesnt annoy people. Yes, thier are some challenges to it but nothing that is too difficult to overcome. You just have to use your imagination, which is what RPing is about.

I'm having fun with it, and I encourage anyone who has the slightest curiosity give it a try. Its not like you have anything to lose.

...and Lunaryn, if you guys are ever looking for new members then check me out. I am not even at the Dunes right now, but I should be at a decent level in a few weeks. My in-char name is Vicairs (also play Gilnataka but not as RP).

        Re: Role Playing?

I've tried to RP, but I always go into a giggle-fit and go out of character, ruining the "mood" and getting stares of disgust and frustration. So, I try to avoid it, but it looks like a lot of fun. ^_^

The only thing I've never gotten in all the time I've RP'd is why so many people have to be orphans. Somebody out there really hates parents.

Well the whole orphan thing is most likely because it leaves your character with no loose ends as well as a reason why your character's an adventurer and not say, a carpenter

                Re: Role Playing?

I have been part of an RP shell on the Catsith sever for just over a year. We do events and people are free to RP any time they choose. As far as the job thing, people basically choose thier prefered job/s and that is what they RP, now if they start to get into a different job they are expected to, and do, RP at some point the change in terms of like training (usually the quest or some twist of the quest) to show progression.

The GM (aka LS lead) has a general story arc that very roughly follows the story that SE has put in. As members we fill in our own bad guys, sometimes using the NPC of the game sometimes not. When I went on vacation last year i had the Papesque kidnap me (long story that most people wouldnt be interested in) and the shell "came to my resque" when i came back from my vacation.

It is a lot of work, but I have had a lot of fun with the whole experiance. Just needs a strong leader who can reign in people if they start to get a little to wild and a group of players that enjoy/want to RP.

                    Re: Role Playing?

As long as people don't Mary Sue, Marty Stu, twink, godmode, or otherwise cause harm to their characters -- they're probably RPing right. Oh, and they have to know their race's history. And have reasons why their character acts the way they do. Wangst is also a no-no, but only because it's irritating.

My character's first highest job was DRK, which I took to 60, and there was a good RP reason for it -- her mother was a DRK, and being a Mithra, she felt it was important to follow in her mother's footsteps. Her mother died fighting with a legion of DRKs from San d'Oria somewhere near the Beaucedine Glacier during the Great War. Somehow or another, her mother's scythe found its way back to San d'Oria and was held onto by her mentor (an Elvaan RDM) for years until she came of age. She became a RDM to honor her mentor who died of an illness unexpectedly. At least that was how it was explained in RP terms. In real life, my best friend who was playing Mozyr's RDM mentor had her internet shut off and wound up getting rid of the game.

I'll have to post a story I RPed out with various members of our linkshell that kind of outlines her history better.

Anyways...history is what makes for good RP. If your character doesn't have a basis for why they act the way they do, they tend to fall apart pretty quick.

Edit: Another RP thing that I think is important. If you're going to be RPing in a text format, PLEASE know and understand grammar. It's really tough to RP with someone who says stuff like "i luv u" or "were r we goin?" and so forth. But that's just a peeve of mine. History major. My entire life leading up to and through college was solidly based in grammatical correctness, so I tend to ride people's cases on my LS about punctuation and such. Besides, if you use it correctly, it makes you look smarter. Oh, and become acquainted with the differences between their, there, and they're. Gah.

                      Re: Role Playing?

So few people know what a Mary Sue or Marty Stu is. I'm glad someone else referenced it though.^^

And yeah, it's all about backstory. If you don't know why your character is doing what he or she is doing, then you're already kind of lost.

Mary Sue: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Sue and http://www.fictionpress.com/read.php?storyid=1440163 (this site gives a pretty thorough description).
Marty Stu (aka Gary Stu): http://www.urbandictionary.com/defin...term=Marty-Stu

There is a really good essay online (long essay) about the history of Mary Sues. It's a fascinating essay. Wasn't able to find the link to it, though. And if you know what twinking and wangst are, you get a gold star! My obsidiman eats twinkies. Earthdawn.

I have a long and tortuous relationship with roleplaying. I started out LARPing Cyberpunk about 11 years ago with my nerdy high school teenage friends. From there, we moved onto a little Steampunk, some D&D 2nd Edition...mostly all tabletop games. I then got into PBEMs and online MUCKs which I'm still involved in, to some extent. I was also heavily involved in White Wolf and was a member of the Camarilla for about two years there with a Russian Brujah 12th gen (I miss playing her; she was fun). I also did some Werewolf LARPing as well. Wound up dropping out of Werewolf and Vampire: the Masquerade since our STs wound up getting into drama that other players and I didn't want to get involved with. But I won't get into that here.

My best friends in town re-started a Star Wars (West End edition, not WOTC crap) Spec Force campaign which I wound up getting in on. We still do that from time to time, but now we have weekly Earthdawn campaigns. I started the Bad RPers Suck! community on Live Journal ~3 years ago since I had so many bad RPers to complain about and nowhere to complain about them. Now it's got ~4600 members.

So...I like to think I know what I'm talking about when it comes to RP since I've been doing it for so long and in so many different settings.

                          Re: Role Playing?

Yeah, I was going to post the Wikipedia page as well. It's a pretty solid description of the term.^^

I played tabletop RPGs back in the early 90's (TSR, White Wolf, Gurps, etc.), and then I kind of stopped playing games altogether for several years after I moved out of my parent's house - I was trying to be "grown up" - but then I came across the PS1 and experienced some of the RPGs for it, and then later on I found the world of MMOs, and all of my old love for the traditional RPG came back in force.

Unfortunately for me, none of my real life friends play video games, or even understand them. They think of it as my weird little thing I do with my computer, and they prefer not to know about it. So no Pen and Paper RPGs for me anymore. It's one of the reasons I wish I knew some roleplayers on Bahamut, but I've resigned myself to the fact that I'm just not going to have much luck in that department. I still enjoy the game even without the RP. That would have just been a bonus.

I consider my roleplay to be me...inside the world of FFXI.

Needless to say I'm the Pimp Royale of Tonberries everywhere and a prosititute for the Church of Altana in San d'Oria. :3

Nice info on this "Mary Sue" business. I've not heard about it until today, but it definitely exists out there. Especially these days, with the popularity of anime. I've never heard use of it before, but it kinda made me laugh as I read the stuff.

I especially enjoyed the test that was linked on the Wiki page. I'd go as far as to suggest any new people to role-playing take the test. I'm definitely keeping that one bookmarked for future reference.

For fun, I took it based on the characters I created over the years. My very first RPG character I created scored a whopping 119. Cerevinan recieved 19 and my latest character for (a D&D game) scored 7. I smiled because it helped me realize how much I've evolved since I first started RPing.

                                Re: Role Playing?

I've made my fair share of Mary Sues. The character I started playing out in GURPs Cyberpunk wasn't a Sue -- but when I transferred her to a live chat ICQ RP and PBEM, MAN did she evolve into a Sue. I'm not quite sure how it happened either, but it was a learning experience.

Mozyr is sort of an archetype. I've played Mozyr in several different mediums (Star Wars tabletop, Star Wars PBEM games, FF XI) and I don't think she's really been a Sue in any of them. If she was a Sue in my friends tabletop game, she would have gotten killed pretty quick. I'm trying to make sure that my obsidiman Nirtii doesn't turn out to be a Sue -- but it's kind of hard to turn an obsidiman into a Sue since Sues are beautiful, and obsidimen are 8' tall, 1 ton men/women made of stone. I don't think you can turn a 7'9", 942 lb hunk of walking rock into a Sue.

                                I my obsidiman.

I've met a lot of twinks in the RP-verse of FF XI, though.
