The number one excuse I hear as a roleplayer about people not roleplaying is always "I'm not good enough." It's really sad to always hear that. I'm in a roleplaying linkshell on Sylph and I've been in several other online roleplay communities in the past (in FFXI as well as Everquest II). There are a lot of people in these communities that aren't the best roleplayers in the world yet they still do it. I applaud those who do.

Roleplaying in itself is not as difficult as many make it out to be. You just have to toss out all the stuff you've learned about online gaming (ie. Internet shorthand use, slang, etc.). In addition, you have to forget all the rumors you hear about roleplaying. Many don't even know what it is. It doesn't involve Shakespear talk...it doesn't mean you have to stop doing everything else the game has to offer...In fact, it offers MORE to do. Many people who have leveled more than one job to 75 start getting bored with the game content, spending hours on end just sitting in town doing nothing. Roleplay offers a chance to interract with more people and expand one's creativity.

With that said, I'll go ahead and advertise the roleplay shell I'm involved with^^. www.ffxi-ethereal.com. I strongly encourage people to get involved in this concept. It truly offers more to your gaming experience and can easily kill boredom on those days you'd normally just be sitting in Jeuno staring blankly at your screen or waiting for that party invite you may not even get.

Unfortunately for me, if any LS's are into roleplaying on Hades, they're hiding very well. I looked for a long time and couldn't find any. Tried to start one and couldn't due to lack of interest.

In the vaguest sense, yes. But not really.

Playing the game is playing the game. Creating a personality and backstory for your character, and removing any reference to the mechanics of the game while interacting with others is a more general definition. It varies from person to person.

In other games, it meant that there was usually a specific ruleset for that server. What was allowed in /say and other general channels, naming conventions, etc. In FFXI, each LS or individual has to create their own rules for what is and isn't RP for them.

Because we're all on different servers, and most of us don't want to start over (especially those that have been using the same character for years).

No. Have you been playing long?

To change servers you have to get a world pass to a friend's server, and then you start over from scratch. You don't just transfer your character over.

It'd be nice if they allowed you to change servers, if even for a fee. I wonder why they don't allow it.

Many games prohibit server changes. I know that in EQ you could, but it cost a lot of RL money. Like, for one fee you could move your character, completely naked and you lost your gear, and for even more you'd get your money, but no gear, and then for more you'd get gear and money, or something like that.

WoW did a few server migrations like FFXI has done, I believe.

I guess there are naming issues to consider, and it could be exploited if people were to do it a lot. Buy a bunch of stuff that sells well on a server, switch, sell it, switch back and reap the benefits, or whatever.

Anyway, I'm not talking about RP at this point, so I should cut this short.

It can be difficult, but on Midgardsormr there haven't been too many people who were offended by/tried to interfere with people RPing at least. On the linkshell Pteryx mentioned earlier, we do some RP over linkshell and much in person (the linkshell was purchased ICly by my main character to be able to keep in touch with Pteryx's character). We generally agree to certain things like only RPing during downtime in xp parties, game mechanics are as real as possible (i.e. we really do have moogles, we really do change jobs, the process of changing to a new job weakens one and necessitates they start training all over, etc.), and post-production is allowable (retracting/modifying incorrect statements, etc. is fine, we can back up a few lines if necessary; also, scenes that are difficult to perform in-game may be done on IRC or on the LS Forum).

We're in basically a 'closed recruitment' mode, I guess you could say, in that linkpearls are basically handed out ICly in RP as a result of Kamiel or Kumei trusting someone with one.

Once we're organized enough to have character profiles and logs available, maybe I'll post the forum link.

That's very interesting. In-game NPCs do state changing jobs (confirming the actual existence of it in Vana'diel) is a secret that only moogles know. It's an amazingly simple solution that it almost sounds too good to be true.

Just curious, have you run into any problems or issues with playing that way?
