      Re: What the hell?

Well, I guess its a matter of what appeals more to each one of us. FFXI sure has drama in endgame, I have seen it and it is not pretty, but that is the way FFXI works and unfortunatley we have to work with and around it. There used to be time where linkshells would fight over dynamis, now they all have nice scheduling where everyone states their dates and people respect etc, it works nicely. WoW is a very good game, but for the time being I will keep playing FFXI, its more of what I like, where my friends are and what makes me have the most fun!

        Re: What the hell?

I too was also excited when I bought the game for 360, but I had absolutely no idea how long it would take to download the software! ;p

I got it Friday afternoon and finally finished downloading it Saturday evening!

Despite the long wait, it was well worth it! The graphics on the 360 (especially on an HD television!) are amazing!

Im having a great time playing it (its only been a week and Ive already got an LS and a bunch of buddies helping me out), and I play it every chance I get

Much better than WOW (no offense to WOW players) ;p

Enjoy the journey, find a class that suits your style and it would be fun.
18 months and not a single level 60 yet :D

I kind of missed those days when the Quadavs in South Gustaberg would send me running away...

              Re: What the hell?

#1 Character customization is seriously lacking, but that's not a major.

It's quite basic. You have a certain job; you can wear certain stuff to improve stats. At the start it doesn't seem very special, but it will get much better. At 75 you will be able to switch to a system called Merit. That will allow you to customize character stats you prefer to be customized.

Clothing will look much better when you get to higher levels. More different colors and the like.

This isn't a game where you log in as a new adventurer being stunning to look at. I mean, when I subscribe to the army I won't get a cool outfit, a couple of medals, become physically stronger in an hour and fly a jetfighter. ^_^

#2 These graphics are horrible! Oh my god, my poor eyes. This looks like a PS1 game, not even close to next-gen.

It's a PS2 port to the PC. Yes, the graphics are horrible when played in a very low resolution. Before you start PlayOnline (if you play on PC) go to the Start Menu and hit the FFXI Configuration tool. Fool around with those settings and you'll see some very stunning graphics in game. I play with the highest options available, well I think the graphics are absolutely sweet.

I personally don't like the WoW cartoon style. FFXI looks much more real to me, even for fantasy figures.

#3 I can look past the graphics, if the game is good enough. But it isnt. Controls are cumbersome, your character can't even jump. And then I killed my first monster. Oh man, Auto-Attack? Who the hell thought of that. This is the laziest excuse for a combat system I have ever seen.

Characters can't jump. True. I like the controls though. My right hand on the numpad moving the camera, my pinky on the -, + and enter of the numpad to access menu, chatbox and confirm actions. My thumb on the directional buttons for camera view. When I run over the field (8), I press the 7 for autowalk and turn the camera a bit to view the area. Pretty convenient.

My left hand works my macro sets and TAB button.

Auto attack. I think it's rather convenient. The only thing your character does is swinging his weapon. Everything else you need to do manually or with sets of macro's. Magic, Weapon Skills, Job Abilities and you need to time those very well to get the most out of it. Later on you'll join in Weapon Skill combinations, you must be very alert to follow a WS from another party member to create elemental damage on which a mage will put a spell dealing quite some extra damage!

And there is much, much more to take care of when fighting. But you'll discover as soon as you start working in groups and killing monsters a.s.a.p for about 180-280/300 XP and chaining monsters for XP bonus'. You'll understand once you experience.

#4 Levelling up is fairly easy when you're level 1-3. From then on, it's just plain boring. The so called "even match" monsters are actually WAY STRONGER, and the "decent challenge" monsters are managable but give you hardly any XP. Yes, this game sure is fun! Killing hundreds of rabbits and worms just so you can get to the next level.

Yeah, the first 10 levels are quite solo. By then people start grouping and fight Incredibly Tough/Very Tough monsters. It will be very challenging. You rely on eachother. One mistake can be a fatal one.

Once you progress in level, you will do more missions, more quests. You'll start Linkshell events with a lot of friends. A funny thing to do is EcoWarrior @ lvl 20. You'll have a walk with about 18 people through a dangerous area, pop an Impossible to Gauge Notorious Monster, and bash in on it. Another nice one at quite low level is Garrisson. Also with a huge group. The first cool mission @ 25, where you have to slay a dragon in a closed environment where only you and your current party members can enter.

              And that's only the beginning!

#5 Where are the weapons? I'm level 7 and still using the Onion Sword I started with. If you're rich you might be able to buy a slightly stronger weapon from the auction house, but you never really "find" weapons. Just items that do nothing, like flint stones and bat wings.

Aye, you might want to sort the AH items by level. That way all level 75 items show on top and the lower levels down below. You can select Weapons. Pick the kind of Weapon you like. i.e. Sword; Scroll all the way down and you'll see some lower level Swords, check the price history and make a bid.

Ah, you need gil? Well, there are quest which get you gil. But a very easy way is to fight with Signet on. You can ask for Signet at the gate guard before you leave town. (It's the guard with 2 letters after the name like: R.K. T.K.) From that moment you'll get crystal drops from monsters. A stack of crystals (12 crystals combined) sell for a decent amount of gil. And you will get a lot of crystals. (also sort your items; access menu, select items, sort; auto; yes)

You might wanna try to pick up a small job. Alchemy comes to mind. There are a few low level recepies to make which net some huge profit. Don't buy the items you need for your craft; just slay wasps, for beehive chips, later on skeletons for bone chips. Also stacks of those easy to obtain items sell for quite an amount of gil.

Later in the game you'll discover plenty of ways to easily obtain gil. When I started this game I also thought like: I will never be able to buy that cool equipment. Right now, I possess that equipment. It took some work, but it will pay of! Definately.

#6 I have to force myself to like this game, because I payed money for it and I can't return it. So give me some ideas on how to succeed! I must be the weakest player on the server, because everybody I see has uber weapons and armor, and trying to sell lame items for 99,999,999 gil. I want to enjoy this game, I really do. But it feels like Square-Enix have done everything they can to make it suck.[/QUOTE]

Like a previous poster said: the 99999999999 amount in Bazaar is either to show off, OR in my case to be sure I don't throw the item away.
When I need to earn gil I go to the mines, and mine a lot. I clean my inventory really quick. Get rid of pebbles and stuff, sort my inventory etc. etc. If I have a HKTK cluster with me (cause moghouse is full again or something) I put it in my Bazaar for 9999999999 gil. No one will buy the cluster for 9999999999, oh if they're willing to pay that much for a 2 million item, go ahead, I'll get a new one. But the point is, by putting it in my Bazaar, I can't throw it away accidentally.

Also know there are shops in town. Armor shop, Weapon shop. They don't have much. But you can have a peek. Most of the time I find the AH the better place to be.

Hope this helps a bit. There is so incredibly much to do. I admit. This game is hardcore. It's an incredible timesink. But if you're willing to spend a lot of time in game, you'll be hooked for the next 2-3 years! ^_^

                Re: What the hell?

you know you would realy love WoW and RF-Online (prehaps Anarchy online (download it free on its web page and play free for as long as u want)) but this really is a great game, if you dont want to fight thats fine (even the best of us get board out of our skulls with battling) go learn how to craft or do some missions and quests for the humble townfolk of your home city, or just go and make friends and chat to ppl and go /poke some mogs that are currently hanging out in the citys theres pleanty to do for fun you just have to be willing to find it

                  Re: What the hell?

I am amazed at the graphics every time i got inot a new area. but then again i am on pc and have it bummped up. WOW to me is childish cartoon graphics. (no offence to the WOW players) and the lvl system is too weak.

Plus from what i heard there is a lot more of a mature group playing FFXI then WOW.

Its funny I had a friend that plays WOW try out FFXI and he was utterly discusted the gate gaurds in ronfare didnt assist him when he was dieing. I simply told him.

"Do you expect them to risk their neck for you." LOL
Thanks to Kazuki for the amazing sig pic ^^

Yeah, that's the thing with people doing to many comparisons. They expect one MMORPG to work like another MMORPG, none of them work the same they have their own unique methods and practices. In EQ or WoW has falling damage, Anarchy Online doesn't (Use to but they removed it).

Just kind funny I think that players can accept games like FFVI/FFVII/FFVIII were there was no platforming along with FFX-2 were there is platforming yet are of the same Genre, then try this same difference in MMORPG and they are OMG! this sucks!

To much double standards and all that crap.

                      Re: What the hell?

It's hard to compare MMO's unless they're a basically a slightly-modified copy of one another due to the fact on how much they differ in goals. For instance, I can't claim that SWG is a bad game (as much as I personally believe it to be) due to the fact that its style of play and content does not suit my taste (whereas a more Star Wars fanatic would enjoy SWG over FFXI, typically speaking). WoW and FFXI are extremely different - probably the only real similarity is that it is an MMORPG. I enjoy the graphics in WoW as I do in FFXI, I can't claim that the WoW graphics "sucks" since Blizzard was obviously aiming to go for the cartoonish look as shown in all their previous Warcraft games; whereas FFXI went to a more "realistic" appearance and coloring. Sadly, the attitude and maturity of the playerbase remains the same through all pay-per-month MMO's. The ratio of idiots:non-idiots is pretty much the same between FFXI and WoW (just that WoW has A LOT larger population.. and the majority of players are American). People have to realize that MMORPGs are all different and is actually not something you can compare to another MMO real easily.

                        Re: What the hell?

I like how it takes long to level on FFXI, it makes you happy after every leveled gained. I've played other games like Maple Story, Ragnarok Online, and R.O.S.E (all in BETA, I actually played an illegal version of Ragnarok Online, until my friend told me it was illegal). It was easy in those games.. well easier than FFXI, but after gaining a level I was just like "whatever, I'll see that in another 10 minutes".

                        Anyways, I'm rambling <__< I'll stop now
