her computer is slow enough without underclocking it >< And its -only- FFXI that has this issue. Plus, the problem appears to come and go. I don't see how clock speed would suddenly increase for 30min at a time while she's playing. Certainly it means half the time she'd be runing too slow to play the game affectivle.

I think TGM said she's had the same problem with either her or her son's computer.

Yep, my son has this issue on occasion. It happens and can last minutes, hours, or days. We've ripped apart the entire computer and put it back together. We've updated drivers, bios, etc. We've tried all of the things your g/f has and then some but nada. It just happens. He has it noted on his account that it happens too, don't know what they will do with that but its there.

Might I ask what the comptuer specs are? Maybe there's some sort of corelation. It has to be hardware (or software) related locally. I could log my account on her computer and be speedy, likewise she logged on my computer and was slow as molassas in jan.

I agree that it's stupid that they gave her a warning when she told him that she was having this problem and doesn't know why it's happening. And I'm just plain amazed at the fact that this could even happen. I didn't think it was possible to inadvertantly run faster than normal.

If i am not wrong. recently some of the patches fixes speed hack.
Maybe due to those fixes now there is a leak somewhere which make people without doing anything run faster sometimes.
This is all just a guess

We do not know what it is but my son will logout of the game in fear that he'll be banned when it happens. It's such a shame that they won't acknowledge this problem so that people who are not cheating don't get tossed out on their ear. We've devoted a lot of time and money into the game and I would hate to have to give it up. But if they did that to my son, I could not in good faith pay them a cent more.

On my old computer, after a while the computer clock would always ran faster than normal clock would. If you have a failing CMOS battery that can cause the computer clock to either speed up or slow down at times. Since FFXI seems to be linked to the computer clock, this can cause the problems of running too fast.

As well, Windows XP has the time synchronization option that will set the clock to whatever server it contacts, but since it seems to last a while I put my money on the CMOS battery failing.

Edit: As well, the time going too fast problem was pretty common on the A7N8X series of motherboards, so can check that as well.

Are you guys familiar with PAT? It was introduced with intel's 865/875 chipset. Basically, when the cpu/sytem load reaches a certain threshold, the motherbord will begin overclocking the CPU/RAM. I dunno if AMD has anything similar. The only way to disable it is to go into bios. This prolly isn't your issue, but something to consider.

You guys are awesome! You've given me a lot of things to look at and consider before taking it up with Tech Support again. So much more helpful than "is your CPU overclocked?"

I'll poke around some more and give some updates tomorrow.

I was having this exact same problem for a few days about a month ago. I would randomly start running at flee speed. It is kinda scary knowing that someone could report you for that and there would be pretty much no way you could defend yourself >.<

maybe its one specific piece of hardware on your PC's that does it

like maybe the Proc

or the vidcard

or even the Nic card

if u find out which part you guys have in common maybe thatll solve this mystery

just please tell me what part it is so i can get one for my PC =P

does your gf have a CPU that throttles the clock speed (e.g. cool n' quiet) to save power/lower heat? that could be doing it.

Actually I think that may have been my issue as I am on a laptop and it was unusually hot in my apartment the week it was happening.

Ooh, PAT I totally forgot about that. Now that you mention it I think some of the AMDs have something similar to that, it sounds familiar like one of my computers at home had it (all my comps are AMDs).
