  • New Player Question

I just bought FF XI I have played Everquest for the past 3 years and have enjoyed that. I really like the art work I see in FF. I have been reading a lot on the forums about the different professions in FF.

I have narrowed it down to 3

    White Mage
    Dark Mage
    Red Mage

    I have a couple Questions,

    1. I saw in the intro video the mages droping large stones on the invaders. Is that a White mage spell?

    2. At what level does the white mage get to rez other players?

    3. If you pick White mage and later want to be a dark mage can you change or will you have to relevel all over?

    4. Which mage profession is the fastest to level?

    Thanks for the help

      (1) The real area effect ice attack spell is called Blizzaga, and it comes in 3 levels: Blizzaga I, Blizzaga II, and Blizzaga III. They're usable by Black Mages.

      (2) White mages get Raise I (25% XP returned) at level 25, Raise II (75% XP returned) at level 56, and Raise III (90% XP returned) at level 70.

      (3) Changing jobs can be done any time you have access to a moogle in town, either inside your mog house, or via a Nomad Moogle. FFXI tracks each of your job levels separately, so if you swap to a new job, you have to earn experience points on that job if you want it to increase.

I think you'll find this system to be very handy - much superior to levelling alts in Everquest and other MMORPGs since you don't ever have to re-do missions, quests, or other annoying tasks when you want a change of pace.

      (4) Hard to say what the fastest levelling mage is nowadays. Of the basic 3 mage jobs, I'd say Red Mage gets to level 75 fastest, but it really depends on supply/demand. All bets are off now, however, as the newest expansion has thrown three new jobs into the mix and disrupted the common wisdom about how parties are constructed.

sorry, but that statement is entirely false. The demand for blms is much less compared to tanks (pld, nin) and support jobs (brd, rdm)

aye, manaburns are fast. However, this requires you to find 4 other seeking blms and a brd (hard to come by sometimes) in order to make an effective burn party.

yes the brd is sometimes hard to comeby

but can be replaced with a rdm

              or even now a COR

Yeah, maybe COR(don't know to much about the job, personally), but every rdm I come across says {no thanks} to refresh whoring.

ok, first of all, there's no "dark mage." i think you mean "black mage"
second, white mage is not a very good choice for your very first character. it's tough to get it levelled to the party levels unless you know what you're doing. white mage doesn't solo well at the higher levels, either. you don't deal enough damage to kill anything worthwhile before it kills you.

if you want to play a mage, red mage or black mage is good. white mage gets raise at level 25, red mage gets it at 38, and black mage gets it at 50.

if you ask which mage job is the fastest to level to the level cap, i'd say "all of them." comparing mages as far as party invites is like comparing race horses in a dash to the finish line. it's close, but i think red mage would win by a nose (just my opinion though.) compare that to some of the melee's, who have a hard time finding groups... :dead: i believe bard is the fastest job to get to 75.

in ffxi, we have a system for switching jobs. you can level any job you have unlocked at any time, and you can switch with no penalty. one day, you will be levelling your level 52 red mage in kuftal tunnel. the next day you log on and say, "I don't feel like leveling red mage. i'd rather be a blue mage." So, you switch to your level 15 blue mage and level it in valkrum dunes. the next day, you go back to levelling your 52 red mage in kuftal again.

there's no penalty to switching jobs. you can level all of them up to level cap on the same character. when you switch back, you'll find the job exactly as you left it. in fact, the game urges you to try all the classes.

give this game a shot, and welcome aboard
