You'll need to be a Private Second Class before you can do Assault, so yea, I'd assume you're one.

If you went through that whole cutscene were Naja (ms?) goes and states how foreigner's names are so odd. She request that you write it on a piece of paper for her, if you do she goes and takes that blank paper after you put your name and writes out a contract on it (Not usually the way you'd do it but ok, sneaky Mithra ).

It's after that cutscene that you become "Private Second Class".
