Re: I want everyones answer to this

This is all very interesting to read about. However, when you talk about automobiles, one could safely assume that a lot of people like automobiles. However when one person tricks their's out to be better or look cooler or whatever, no one complains. But when in this game someone bots or grabs a mob before someone else it's nothing but drama between characters, which have lead to GM calls and what-not.

So what if things aren't fair? If someone's a bad player, it will be recongnized and the player would be thrown out of parties.

Also, it's wrong to say I'm not open about passions, for I take a passion in religious and spiritual iconography, symobology, theology, etc. This is where I learned most about being open minded to begin with, and I also learned a lot about common sense, and how uncommon it is. In spirituality, people keep to themselves in a very personal manner. However, in relgious groups, people tend to try to get themselves higher ranking, or make themselves the "preachers pet". It's the same concept in this game: if something bothers you when it does not effect you, why even bother with it?

In the end, it's easy to see the very human qualities beneath the players, and this thread is evident of that. The fact that people are more themselves in game most of the time take the "Role Playing Game" aspect out of it. This is because very few people actually role play. When I say "Role Play" I mean at every turn, in every channel, people are their character, and not their person.

A modern bath house, one could say. You are what you make yourself to be to others. And true, a liar is one that can been easily spoted outside the bath house. However, in this game, people can lie about every aspect of thier lives, for it is, indeed, a role playing game. However there is a big difference between real life and the game in the social sphere: we are differnet online. Some of us are more agressive, some are more quiet. At the same time we could be the exact same. It's all evident, just keep track of what you do IRL and what you do in game.

This topic was meant more for getting a better feel of attitude, and not to cause any animosity. I hope more people keep posting, becasue it will help make each player understand where the other may be coming from.

Re: I want everyones answer to this

In one standpoint it is a game. However we do form affinities within the game, a person's affinity will effect them in RL. It's partly what will keep a player intrested in the game or lose intrest. The times you commit something you know will piss a person off you destroy their affinity for the game. It's same physics of mentally as sports are in the matter of being a good sportsman. Sure you'd like to rub a victory in someone face or point out their defeats, but there is a proper time and inproper to do it.

This game has some teaching aspect with being a good community member but it isn't a sole source teacher. Now with nearly all games and proven scientificly each genre does teach the body or trains a skill. Stratedgy and RPGs are common teachers of Problem Solving, Visual Scanning, and Task Organization. Driving, Simulations, and FPS the good ones have been proven to increase reaction times and depending on how well developed even improve environmental awareness.

MMORPGs have many of the benefits that RPGs do but they also incorporate and stress the need of friendly play. Friendly Play is a social skill so you are learning what is acceptable behavior and what is not. Along with social MMORPGs by the gamers own actions tend to develop communities of like minded players, this is the key element that makes FFXI a neccesity to it.

Part of the like minded community is based around the fact that they play FFXI, doesn't matter if MySpace is cheaper. If you join a MySpace community you have little clue if they play FFXI until you talk to them, which likely in order to talk to them you'd have to have something else closely in common. So Myspace actually has less of a chance to find a community you are comfortable in and reduces the numbers and chances of finding like minded people.

The players that go out and state "It's just a game" are likely to be LS or more commonly hang with groups that would say the same thing, you've created a community with like minded people in that fashion.

Lol, got to be kidding on this section. Comparing tricking out your automobile is better compared to a player tricking out their Character with gear in the game.

Stealing the parts to trick out your automobile is a better comparison to some using a bot and such to get money or whatever else to trick out their Character with gear in the game.

      You're analogy is slightly skewed.

Seeing as how one isn't actually stealing to get a better character, but instead making time to do chores (in example), why not bot fishing?

The very basics of Role Play is being someone that you usually are not. So people being more capable of expressing themselves or are more defensive they are being someone that they usually are not. In essence they are Role Playing, you don't have to go as far as being a PLD and start saying "By Altana name! Halt!" or some other goofy crap. If you do then you are playing out a character behavior you wanted to but wouldn't be as readily accepted in RL, but it's basics are you are being someone that you usually are not.

It's kind of like going along the test "Is the grass truely greener on the other side?" for some people it does help reaffirm themselves and makes them more confident. That in itself starts to knock out the pure essence of it just being a game.

Alright let me make a new anology. Why the hell do runners stay on a set path route for a run if the finish line is behind them? Why not just head straight for the finish line and be done with it? Soccer players only use their feet in the sport why not grab the damn ball with their hands and hoof it to the goal, hell use the feet to kick the crap out of the opposing team that comes close to you.

It's cheating no matter how you want to justify it, and that's the same in essence that botting does. You could even apply that phrase to Soccer when you go cheat the rules, go ahead and just say "It's just a game" because Soccer is a game.

          EDIT:

Oh, even with Martial Arts there was a logic test to once you reach a certain point to see if you're mentaly ready for the next phase. Part of it they ask when told to do 10-20 Pushup why would you choose to do 20?

okay, i won't turn this into a botting battle, so lets just leave it at that. i do have my own views on the matter (such as "if botting bothers you so much, then don't do it" *glares at kailea*)

Re: I want everyones answer to this

Upgrading a car would be more like someone getting new armor, which no one complains about if it's done fairly. But botting and claim stealing is more like someone who trciked out their car to use to escape the police after robbing a bank. They broke the rules and took your hard earned money and now are making a clean break.

If your farming and someone vokes a mob from under you right as your about to swing, it's rude, but not against any rules thus completely fair. But if your camping a NM and someone just appears in the zone right on top the mob when it spawns and instantly claims it, that's unfair, against the rules and just plain dirty. I've camped many NMs against other people only to cheer and congratulate them for getting claim and drop. And the same situation has happened in reverse where I got claim, drop and praise for doing so by competition. Now luck is one thing, but botting screws over everyone who tries to play fair and hurts the community.

The reason why this is not 'just a game' is because there ARE real people on the other end of that screen. You can't treat them like crap and not expect to bother them, humans have feelings no matter what the situation. You can't screw someone over and expect them to ignore it, most people get upset when things like that happen. It's how we are and what we are and there's no real way to change that on a massive scale.

Not the entire compase of how Kailea-D put it, but to that aspect it has effected me in real life in that I tend end up leaving dispointed that a known bot player had beat me to a NM. I ended up in a time-sink that SE designed but has been hightened by a player cheating the game.

When I'm beat by a legit player to a NM I at least a chance to talk and congrats them and tend to leave the game when I have to in a good mood. When I'm in a good mood my mental sharpness is higher and stronger then if I was in a bad mood, in a bad mood I become more reckless and destructive.

Not only a game can put me in these moods but they are one of many contributors.

                EDIT:

Lol, Ziero playing the broken record?

I pretty much stated just that on the last page.

This game, and any other MMO I play, is a godsend to my real life. I suffer from a very painful debilitating disease. There are days that all I want to do is curl up into a ball from the pain and lay in bed. Having MMO's and the friends I have made in game, helps me to "ride the rough weather". I recently went through 3 weeks of HELL physically but I forced myself to log on for ls events. It was amazing how the chatter with friends and the focus on our goal helped me to deal with the pain and overall poopy feeling. The few hours of happiness that I could enjoy in an otherwise crappy day is worth the $12.95! The friends I have made online are important to me. Yes, its a different type of relationship than my real life friends but its just as important.

I also play MMO's with my son, husband and other family members. I've played games with family for many many years and its only pulled us closer together. We've also played card, paper, and board games. Gaming can and always will be an integral part of our lives. And now I'm looking forward to expanding this knowledge to my grandchildren and will continue to game with them! We've learned a lot from the people we have met and continue to have long lasting relationships with some of the people we've met. It has opened up lines of communication, helped with self confidence, made us laugh and smile, and helped my our days brighter. What more could I ask for?

It effects your life if you can't shrug it off as being something that will fade.It is fun and involving, but never the less you should never forget that it doesn't further you in life and really has no meaning. It is an outlet, not another path in your tangible life.

Atleast that's how I see it. I will not sacrifice any aspect in my life simply to play this game. I don't put off studying for it. I don't have my girlfriend watch me play it, infact I refuse to be playing it and will log when she calls. If you plan things right, nothing will really obstruct the other unless unplanned events happen, but even in that case, this game is the first thing that will go instead of another thing in my life.

I disagree. Gaming adds great meaning to life. Everything that we choose to do each day does. I guess it just depends on how you look at things. Is the bottle half empty? or half full?
