Just so we're clear, it was more than just Stun. Blind, Sleep and Bind were also pretty solid enmity tools before SE nerfed RDM tanking.

blind > stun > sleep > bind rinse and repeat

Oh yeah, Yyg I need to ask you some more questions for NIN. Your display of nin prowess piqued my curiosity. I brought DNC up to 49 so I can sub it. If you wouldn't mind giving me a decent rough couple of names for Evasion pieces (via PM).

Go to the FFXI wiki page and make a search for equipment containing a Evasion Modifier and then further reduce that list by telling it to refine the search to equipment wearable by NIN.

That will give you a good list of both buyable and Rare/Ex gear that you should aim for.

Augments to keep in mind for NIN gear:

Dual Wield
Haste
DEX
AGI
Evasion
Subtle Blow

I’m a little behind…my apologizes.
While I’m not disagreeing with nin/dnc being better but…

It took face time demonstration to prove that Evasion+DW+Stun+Ability Haste+TP Healing trumped Phalanx+SS. I did this by aggroing the Diremite NM in Abyssea Uleg. Range and letting it swing at me with 100 Fists and never break through my shadows once until the very end when it started to spam TP moves.

Don’t you get more haste with /Rdm? Isn’t the spell > JA?

And doesn’t Haste Samba not affect spell timers whereas spell does?

And what does DW have to do with in a sub discussion. Doesn’t Nin’s native trait overwrite Dnc’s sub?

So basically you’re looking at a little more evasion (which I can’t imagine being totally necessary for Abyessa mobs)
And Stun (which can be pretty important).

Yes, but JA+Spell = better. If I'm tanking, it's unlikely that another DD is going to be /dnc and provide me with the samba to stack. However, if I go as /dnc I can ask out healer (usually a RDM or a WHM/RDM) to slap me with the spell.

You are correct, but as a NIN there's little need to hasten spell timers apart from Utsusemi... and the spell's effect on those timers becomes a non-issue if you have the proper gear and can get your shadows to outlive the cooldown.

Every little bit of DW matters when you're trying to reach the cap... and I believe the trait does get overwritten. So yeah... forget that.

Even with top notch gear, if your evasion sucks... Abyssea mobs still hit pretty damn hard and are fairly accurate to boot. Besides... every attack you evade equates to less TP for whatever you're fighting. This Evading to avoid TP gain becomes especially important when you're soloing something that has devastating TP moves. The effects of additional Evasion become increasingly more noticeable... until you find yourself capable of pulling every Apkallu in Abyssea Mis. Coast, facing them, popping Yonin and going to make a sandwhich.

As for steps and flourishes... invaluable. Box helps me drop defenses, Quick kills their Evasion (Great for mobs like Flame Skimmer)... and the provoke and stun flourishes are infinitely invaluable for both solo and party play.
